It's official - Naseerudin Shah is a genius. OK, I needed to get that off my chest. Moving on. I saw “A Wednesday” on Thursday and it made me hopeful for every Friday that is going to come our way. Neeraj Pandey’s (in my opinion, the finest directorial debut in a very long time) narrative flow, technical expertise, and hold on the tonality of each and every scene is exemplary. There is not one false note that rings through the film and every member of the ensemble cast (save the “superstar” character on the receiving end of “threatening” underworld phone calls) delivered the directors’ vision to full satisfaction.

Anupam Kher is, and has always been, a superb actor and his performance in “A Wednesday” serves to remind mainstream filmmakers that here exists an actor who's been largely underused in the past. His restraint, silences, and body language are pitch perfect. The poignancy of the film, the message behind the proceedings, and some of the subtle layers that hint at the system at large are relevant even more so today.

Coming back to Naseerudin Shah, his climax monologue is elevating and commands an ovation. I feel inferior in every way to comment on his genius, so all I’m going to do is request this acting institution to take more part in the new Indian cinema movement that thrives today. It would be entirely our loss as a fraternity if we didn’t see more of him. Watch out for his expert dialogue deliverance and you will realize that acting without acting is an art only he has mastered. More power to the team that made this small, large film.

Love and koffee,

Karan

p.s. We finally finished the filming of “Dostana” and are gearing towards the films music release on the 30th of September. A request; it would be absolutely great if you don’t download the album and instead invest in the music, because I do believe it's well worth the money spent.

"Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. I felt young and depressed when I watched this film. Young because it took me back to the backbench days of my college life and depressed because those days are now a distant memory that high doses of Aspartame are erasing by the hour."

exquisite writing. please consider writing a higher piece of fiction some day. Hopefully by then, I'm already a big-shot publisher and would love to publish your book Mr. Johar.

Someone told me you made many of those recent SRK movies... Still cannot believe the two entities are the same...

Dear Karan,
I cannot agree with you more regarding your take on the widely-acclaimed movie "A Wednesday". The movie was a masterpiece, to put it shortly. Both Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher (mind-blowing actors that they are) gave their best performance so far (well, others may or maynot agree with me, but maybe im being prejudiced). You did not mention about Jimmy Shergil's performance in the movie but i think he too has given his best as an ATS officer in the flick. All in all, a thorough thought-provoking movie. Hailing from Delhi, which suffered at the hands of the terrorists just a day age, i now clearly understand what Naseeruddin meant when he called himslef and his likes as "a stupid common man". When will we all also stop looking on helplessly and continue to remain pawns in the hands of the terror-mongers?

Psst... I'm the first one to post a comment on your latest blog entry :) hurray to bollywood for giving us such eye-opening movies.
would love to hear sumthing from ur end on the "on-set" action of Dostana...pranks to controversies would love to hear them all when they come from ur rhetoric pen :)
cheers

I second what you have mentioned in your comments, Karan.
Had it not been for the two exemplary actors - the movie would have been just an average.
Kudos to the producer, director and the movie 'Wednesday'.
It brings to light - what our government's limitations are - at the same time - no one wants to 'take that blame' of taking any major decisions related to politics, nation..etc.

However, somewhere in the middle of the movie - I almost had an inkling that Naseeruddin wants some kind of revenge - but did not know why..

The 'common man' point of view -- was a little too far-fetched -- however, in today's world its accepted..

Hi Karan,

I agree that "A Wednesday" is something that makes you think that Indian Cinema is growing and its innovation is not dead yet.

Will surely buy Dostana's CD.

On a personal note, I will say that I worship SRK and consider him the representative of hard working and popular personality.

I am little bit hurt by his behaviour since yesterday after watching salman's Dus Ka Dum Finale..in which he openely said that actors can not be friends when they are jealous of their conterparts, they feel threatened when Rani quizzed his friendship with SRK.

IF this is the case why they both have fought, then SRK should be blamed and go to Salman and clarify the issues. I know that he is the king , but I have heard that Salman is very good human being.

Thanks,
Avinash

Dear K,

'It's official - Naseerudin Shah is a genius. ' - What do you mean by that? You have directed only 3 films so far, and all of them are pure commercial ventures rather than CINEMA in true sense. You can't make it official that N Shah is genius only after "A Wednesday". N shah has done innumerable genius roles in past and will continue to do in future. YOU cannot make IT official. How stupid you are to write someything like this. I will tell you "Its official - Karan Johar is mad, because he thinks he can officially certify that NS is a genius".

Long live Koffee!!

Its very good gesture on your part to praise debutant director's work in this manner and encourage them. It takes lots of courage, humility and big heart to do so from a member of the same profession.

At the same time you are keeping your eyes and mind open for good work ;its a very good way to progress further. I wish and hope; In near futureDharma Production will be able to deliver these sort of films under its banner nurturing and encouraging new talent and the old ones as well( N.S Shah ) and giving the audience a treat to watch.
I am not flattering but its true that When Dharma's touch is added, the level of the work is automatically (given to your insight and hard work) elevated and it proves its worth in every sense.

I am very happy that in just a couple of weeks we will be able to put our hands on some good music.
Can't wait to buy and listen to the music of Dostana!

Please keep the way ( open minded and big hearted)you are and take care.

Best of luck for all your work!
With best regards.

Hi Karan.

I definitely feel like the industry is pulling up its socks this year. A lot of surprisingly good films are finding audiences, which makes me very happy. It doesn't mean that a star is the most important factor of a movie's box office status anymore.

That being said, I still haven't completely LOVED any of this year's movies. But I do think that it's another step in the right direction for the industry which began in 2006 with the multitude of diverse movies that found audiences.

Please keep posting and I am EXTREMELY excited for Dostana!

Heyy Karan,

Very true. I'm really looking forward to watching A Wednesday. I've always admired Naseeruddin Shah's choice of roles. While he does some very intense and deep roles, he is also able to portray some of the most light-hearted and "commercial" characters with so much finesse. I think he's one of the most underrated actors ....that's why no matter how many great performances he gives he rarely wins any popular or mainstream awards.

Really excited for Dostana. I think it'll be a fun experience. Also, still dying to know more about MNIK. Hope the pre-prod work is going smoothly.

Lots of love,

Hello Sir,
its a good review of the movie Wednesday. Maybe the terror trend has hit the Hindi movie industry where ever you see one will find that numerous attempt made to examine the mind and the behaviour of a terrorist. I find it quite amusing to the fact that most of the movies tend to put only one religion in a bad light and make out as if they are the only ones responsible for all the wrong doing and menace in the world. I don't know that they do this on purpose or its just their misconception. Anyways shifting to lighter things your movie Dostana is going to be a breath of fresh air to watch John and Abhishekh in such a situation to win the love of priyanka is truly hilarious. I wish you all the best for your forthcoming ventures and eagerly waiting for the release of Dostana and hope to hear amazing music as usual . Adios till then and God Bless.

Dear Mr. Johar,

It's so great to read about the music release of Dostana. I am looking forward to hear the music 'cause i liked that *bounce* in the trailer. Some days there was the rumor about an Item Song by Shahrukh Khan for Dostana. Is this just a rumour or is it true? Do you already filmed that song? If yes, when did you do that? I didn't find any confirmation for this rumour.

Best wishes from Switzerland

hi karan...
interesting view you have on nasirudin shah... but just for the sake of discussion lets have him and shahrukh on two panes of a balance. on one side is an actor who as u said has learnt the art of acting without acting and on the other side is an actor who knows how to act his part... we can also say a commercial actor v/s a parallel cinema actor or a star v/s an actor... why am i saying all this to you... cos karan i find it really hard to define an actor... is he the one who creates magic on screen or one who creates magic at box office?? What is the definition of an actor??? i would really love if you give us your def of an actor and also major differences/similarities b/w an actor and a star....

'A Wednesday' was a brilliant film, I totally second that.

Taking this opportunity, Karan, to mention an observation I have made . Films like 'A Wednesday' and 'Dil chahta hai' (very different films, I know) make me feel that they are your genre and really the kind of films you will make, someday. The sensibilities are the same, I feel that from what I glean from your interviews. Jaane tu ya jaane na...

Have loved all your films except KANK. Love those 'moments' in your films.

Hi Karan,

Never knew you were a big fan of both Naseerudin and Anupam.

I know you had Anupam in KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI..but never repeated him after that as, I guess you switched to Big B.

Personally Big B is Big B..no comparison....I just find Anupam great in seroius roles but when it comes to Comedy he just over does and it looks silly.

Naseerudin..well he is also a great actor, but an actor who isn;t regonised anymore as the style of movies had changed and at times Naserudin isn't too keen to switch to the changing trends.

Persionally , keep both of them away from Dharma ...not being mean..but as a fan ..I would like to see Dharam Productions being a cut above others.

Belive me the youth of today dont want to see rona dona and againg actors.

I know these actors are brilliant and have offered alot to our Cinema...but Bollywood needs to grow and constantly change to new ideas.

I'am glad you mentioned that the music of Dostana will be out on the 30th of September, exciting times ahead for Dharma and their fans.

I hope people take note of your request, although I do feel that this is a tall order.

Take care,

I completely agree, a Wednesday was BRILLIANT! On a side note, you should be a critic during your spare time because you write just like one, except you actually know what you're talking about. I don't know if you read my last comment, but does Dostana bare any resemblance to Chuck and Larry besides the fact that Abhishek and John lie that they're gay?
p.s. I promise I'll buy the album if you promise Taurn, Abhishek, and John will do a director/actor commentary on the DVD of the film, then I promise I'll buy the DVD too

Karan,
Well, I hope all your films from now on will have Naseer Sahab and Anupam Uncle in it. I am sure actors of their calibre can be given any role and they will do their best and fit in. If you admire someone, then your actions should speak not just words. Same with Mr. Farooque Shaikh.

I was watching your KANK yesterday(I was sick at home and thought what better!)...this time around, some things that didnt make sense last time, did more so. It was too long....i did forward the song, though I love them...I just wanted to hear the dialogues etc..SRK has acted great as a loser husband who cant value his nice and hardworking wife and falls for another loser wife!
oh well...

Hello Karan, I am from sweden but my origine is from one of the smallest country in the world called Djibouti and We are french spoken.
I know that you are familere to the french language because I have seen the episode of the game show anchored by SRK and he was telling all about the time you were shooting for DDLG in Swistzerland and how well you spoke french.
I am look forward to see Dostana and but the for the piracy DVD or CD music or the downloading , we are against when you people get up every single morning juste to reinvent cinema to keep us entertained and even for three hours. I am an outsider because I have been brougth up with french and american cinema but that doesn't mean that we can be intresting of your cinema because I think that the indian film fraternity is the most talented in the world. I as non indian realised that you offered far more cinema just with the sensibility, drama, dancing, comedy and even action(when you see Don with all the action almost like martial art) on the screen.
But the way I am a huge fan of your family as you say in every interview of yours SRK because he is born with a gift that I think nobody in this earth has and let him know please that he made me smile every single time that I see him.

Hey Karan,
Looks like u r starting to think beyond ur candy floss cinema, which is good. I also felt this was a prelude to ur upcoming praise of Dostana, ha ha.....right?

I like this flavor of Karan but a little more realistic:)

Wednesday sure is a great movie. I was moved by the Naseer's monologue at the end..omg! and the director has handled the script with per excellence....This movie brings hope that indian cinema is moving forward...i hope that the likes of naseer and anupam kher would act more and do some great movies..
PS: sorry to say, but I am not looking forward to dostana at all. It's jsut the actors, i hardly consider them as actors....they are like wood with no emotions and doesn't understand the art....Hopefully you will move away from Abhishek and John and start working with actor who understands cinema....And i can't believe that you ditch kareena kapoor on behalf of Abhishit!

Hi karan,

Just saw the movie! Its brilliant.... wanted to ask you one question.. Does a movie like this makes you feel "Oh what kind of movies am I making?" and where do they stand in front of a movie like "A wednesday"? I had lost hope after watching half of Tashan and Singh is king...just couln't believe that a movie like Singh is King was declared a hit.
Well, I wanted to let you know I love all your movies (for the depth of the story and the extent you go to create emotions) and the movie industry should have a right balance of all kinds of films.

Anupan kher and naseerudin shah got to show their true genius in the film. I wonder if talents like Kajol and shahrukh will ever get to shun their stardom and do roles that show their true genius (shahrukh did it in Swadesh though) But hope to see both of them doing it in your next film (as u claim its different from ur other movies)
All the best from my side!

Finally we have a post from you... I have been practically checking this website everyday. Sometimes 2 -3 times a day. I didn't even know there was a film called A Wednesday and that it was recently released. Naseerudin Shah is of course an actor par excellence. His dialog delivery, his expression are something that nobody can match. Same with Anupam Kher, who is brilliant in every role he potrays, may it be a funny dad's role or it be a serious film like Maine Gandhi ko nahin mara.

Newayz, I assure you that I will not download dostana's song off the internet. I have never done that before and never will. I buy audio CD if I think its worth my money. Good luck with the music release of Dostana and also the movie release.

p.s. I would love to read your posts more often. But I guess you are very busy with the pre production of My Name is Khan. I am too excited about the movie myself, and cannot wait to watch it. The shooting of the film has not commenced yet, but the waves its creating is unimaginable. GOOD LUCK WITH THE PREPRODUCTION WORK... and I really hope everything turns out the way you want it to be...

Hey Karan,
Good to hear from you after a long time. You are a very successful mainstream director why don't you cast Naseerudin Shah in your movies? It is disheartening to see such talent not utilized.

I hope alls well?? I didn't knew even u had a blog!! Its so gud to see you here and really feels great to read all about u . Thanks so much for the lovely posts.
U are the best. As for wednseday it was a gud movie indeed. I thought it would be a boring one without a top rated actor but it came to be rather intresting and a gud one. Hats off to them for a low rated budget movie and to be a hit its a great acheivement.
And really waiting for dostana to be released. Thanks for all the gud movies u have given to bollywood and to us!!!

You have proved your maturity and open mindedness yet again. Praising and encouraging debutant talent takes couage, humilty and big heart as you too belong to the same foray.

N. Shah is really an excellent actor. I wish and hope Dharama Production too leverages on the exceptional capabilities of this wonderful actor in near future.

We want a masterpiece from you in the form of MNIK ,as you are quite capable of doing so . So please concentrate fully on your work and give us audience a treat to watch.

Very happy to realize that its only a few more weeks to go for the music release of 'DOSTANA'.
Can't wait to buy my copy and listen to it!

Best of luck for all your work!

With best regards.

Hi Karan ,
I just wanted to know that can anything be done about the cost of Audio CDs ? When Moser Baer can give away DVDs of new movies at 50 bugs why can't the audio cd's prices be brought down . If a very simple cover edition is brought out for general audience I am sure no one would download the music then . On an avg people can spend maximum 50 bugs on an audio cd . So if you can force the music company guys to carry two versions of the CDs one being expensive and other being a little less expensive then I am sure Piracy could be curbed to a large extent . A blank CD costs nothing more than 7-8 bugs to the company maybe even less . Then what is the reason that the audio CDs cost more than 100 bugs at least . Even multinationals like Mc-donalds have brought down their prices to suit Indian people and after that only they got so popular . Karan have you ever talked in this respect . I am sure the large margin that companies keep right now would be met by selling a large quantity of CDs at a lesser cost .

Hi Karan,

I am definitely going to watch 'Wednesday' one of these weekends.
Everyone I know who's seen it, loved it. If you liked 'Wednesday' then please watch 'Black Friday' too. My fav NS films are 'Masoom' and 'Ijaazat'. He is great. Shall wait for Dostana's music. As a rule, I only buy Mani Ratnam-A.R. Rehman albums -- together they have never gone wrong.

Dear Karan Johar,

Wednesday may be good, but we are waiting to say - "Thank God It's Friday" - on the day Dostana is released.

Undoubtedly, Naseerudin Shah is one of our greatest actors. He is, of course, the best in films like Sparsh, Aakrosh, Chakra, Masoom, and Paar, for which he won the best actor awards, but nothing to beat his best ever performance in Gulzar's TV series Mirza Ghalib. It is amazing how the Gulzar-Naseerudin combo brought alive on the National TV the real Mirza Ghalib from his mosolium. It is a pity that the actor has not been very selective in accepting the roles he has portrayed recently or is it the producers who have not been able to exploit his excellence in acting?

dear karan
I`m alma and I`m from Iran.Although having started writing still can`t believe that I`m being in contact with Mr karan Johar-one of the most talented and ofcourse effective directors in bollywood.Actually I got to know hindi cinema via kalhonaho ,your home production, and I became a great bollywood fan afterward so I think I owe you one ! you talked about a wednesday but unfortunately I haven`t watched it because finding hindi movies is very difficult here( so is dustana,I don`t think I can find a copy in10 years!) Honestly I`m really looking forward(better to say can`t wait ) to know more (and possibly watch...!) MY NAME IS KHAN ,but Ithink you should be alittle more careful with the scenario in order not tonchange it to other ordinary bollywood movies(including KANK).By the way,as shahrukh khan`s best friend ,can you please give him my regards, best wishes and LOVE?! I watched OSO and I`d say I enjoyed every single moment of it.Hope to hear from you soon

Instead of asking people to invest in music why dont you pledge to donate 5% or some number of the music profit to a charitable cost like bihar victim or something like that.

This will make buying more fulfilling then filling the coffer of some person.

Hi,

I came to know only now that you also have blog. I have been reading only AB, Amir till now. Gud that I can connect to you as well.
Yep, wednesday is brilliant movie, the kind which makes me feel proud indian about content of the movie as well as the narration. I always thought we lack quality compared to hollywood when it comes to thrillers. On emotion front we may hev equally gud movies when compared to world cinema. Wednesday made me feel that it is better then Speed which I saw during my college days. And what can we say about Mr Shah & Mr Kher, they are not acting, they are living those characters.

Interestingly I have sent synopsis of small story to contact us of dharma production. The story is simple and set in modern times. I will be greatful to you if you can have look and give me encouraging feedback. I am still developing it and dream that you will produce and direct the movie based on my story:-)

Regarding your movies I Liked Kuch Kuch, Kal Ho Na Ho and Kabhi Khushi, but Kabhi Alvida was lacking the depth required to protray such matured subject. No I am not criticising the way others did but I feel changing/getting into relations looked like child's (gudde gudyonks khel) play in that movie. It is much more difficult and requires lot of guts/pain to make/break a relation or even fall in extra marital relationships. It is not as easy as shown except Abhishek's character. Even today when it comes to such subjects, SilSila comes first to mind where as it wud have been Kabhi Alvida considering it is so recent..

Hi Karan,

I think the message is very clear from your fans...you need to blogg more often. Yes I agree you are a very busy with various projects on hand at Dharma ..but you owe it to your fans.

Like I said before, write about anything ...it could be even a few lines about the recent bomb blasts in Delhi....although it has nothing to do with movies or any kind of entertainment...but we would all like to know what your thoughts are on this matter etc etc.

You could do a little write up on all the cold wars that are currently going on in Bollywood...or the diffrent camps we have within the film ferternty. You could do a little write up on up and comming new talent in Bollywood.

Don't worry about getting your self in trouble....that is a problem whether you say something or not.

Write about your daily routine....write about the recent music you have been listing.

Oh yes.. by the way are you doing the costumes for SRK in Rab Ne J.b.

Good luck with the music launch of Dostana.

Hi Karan,

As always whatever you write makes for delightful reading and yes I completely agree with whatever you have written about the veterans. Being a great filmmaker yourself, I love the way you delve into the intricacies of your craft and the people associated with it and what's more are wholehearted in your appreciation-that, I must say, is a rarity.

All the best for "Dostana" and all your future endeavours including your venture with the stalwarts-Kajol and Shah Rukh..

take care and keep blogging...love and coffee (as you conclude)

Hi Karan,

Yes as usual m goin to "invest" in the CD of Dostana...yes, music in all Dharma production movies is worth an "investment"..as they are always good to hear for a long time....

I completely agree with your views on 'A Wednesday', u won't beleive I just came back from watching that movie...i still feel guilty that as a common man i've yet to contribute somethin to the society...Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher are really an institution by themselves...one flaw though i found in the movie direction or rather an error is...the instance where Naseersaab places the bag in VT station... nobody would let anyone do that...i've been to VT station so many times...pepl are really vigilant now...

so i see u r ignoring comments on the idea of your on screen performance and ofcourse "My Name is Khan"!! :-)

so Sept 30th it is...

Hi Karan,
I am simply elated to see your blog for 2 reasons, 1- because I love you. Actually all of us at home do love you. 2- which is honestly the bigger reason for my joy. Because I can actually convey my 3 year old daughter's message to Shahrukh via you (I hope you will oblige). My little daughter (I have no idea how on earth...!)since see was 2 years old, has been telling me that she loves Don (this is what she call SRK..lovingly)and that Don is her 'mum'! She keeps telling me that she must go to 'Bombai' to go back to Don's house because this is where she used to be before she came to me. She keeps saying 'Don mujke liye lo lahi hogi' (she is quite a 'totla' baby). Sometimes when she is sad and I ask her why is she sad. She tell me, "becoz' Don has not yet come to take me ". When I tell her that she is my angel and where was she all these years; she says, "I think I was Don's baby and he used to cuddle me and take care of me". Everytime I visit India and land in Mumbai, I think of writing a letter to Shahrukh to tell him of my little innocent baby's love for him (she thinks that he is her mother). But then I think he might misunderstand and think that one of us adults must be his fans and so we must be building up this 'cute' story. So I have never dared to write to him. But now Tweety is going to be 4 years in November, but still she has not grown out of her affection for SRK. Would you be kind enough to let him know this, please.
Love and koffee 2 u 2

Hi Karan,

it was interesting to read you opinion on your favourite movies of 2008. As it is a little difficult to buy original DVDs where I live (not to mention that there are almost no Hindi-Movies played in theatres), I haven't seen so many of this years films.

What I have seen is Jodhaa-Akbar. I think that it was Ashutoshs weakest movie (compared to Lagaan - his best - and Swades). Hrithik Roshan for me is too wooden to be believable emotional. Aishwarya Rai is the typical example that to have a beautiful face, a good body and the ability to dance does not mean that you can act. Ergo: she could not convince me. I think it might sound very strange. But the moment you forget that you look at a specific actor and instead see the portrayed character is a very rare but special one. And sadly I could only see a wooden Hrithik and a stiff, emotionless Aishwarya. Jodhaa-Akbar was too long and although I really admire A.R.Rahmans work I have to say that the soundtrack was dissapointing (especially the "Derwish-Song" with the totally unnecessary modern drum pattern).

Jaane Tu is a nice feelgood movie with a catchy soundtrack. It did not bring me back to my school-days but it was a pleasure to watch. Charming actors, nice ideas for the picturisation of the songs and a sweet happy end. But: again too long. And the beginning reminded me too much of Chalte Chalte.

I haven't seen Rock on. So I can't comment on that one.

Although I haven't seen "A Wednesday" yet due to above mentioned reasons. I do like most of the stuff, Mr. Shah and Mr. Kher did so far so I hope to get a chance to see this movie some day.

I was very dissapointed by Love Story 2050 because it was a mere copy (theft) of everything that was successful in Hollywood (in that genre), of Sarkar Raj because showing dark rooms, dark landscapes and actors having no emotions at all and just looking around with knitted eyebrows and hanging corners of their mouth is not my idea of a good movie. Race because of the horrible action scenes, one or two twists too many and really bad dance numbers (please someone stone the choreographer). Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic because of an almost lethargic Saif, a totally not challenged Rani and the bad directing of Kunal Kohli.

And I was also very dissapointed by you. Sorry to say so. I think it is very sad to be that afraid of getting older like you are. It is one thing to fight first signs like grey hair with fake colour. But promoting something like injecting poison into your face to avoid wrinkles sounds so stupid, wrong and totally immature. Please behave like a grown up man and not like an old long time forgotten diva. Thanks.

Here I'm sitting on my bench waiting for your next post and hope that you will reconsider the use of the bad stuff beginning with a big "B".

Best regards

Kristine

Karan,

I so wish to see A Wednesday, but alas am still waiting for the release of the DVD. Where I live it's tough to be a Hindi movie fan and stay current while eschewing piracy, but I try to hold strong. This, along with Shyam Benegal's latest will have to wait be viewed in my home theater (if you catch Welcome to Sajanpur be sure to review, I would love to know what you think.) Lucky enough that Dostana is mainstream enough to be played at our local theater, and based on those promos I'll definitely try to catch it opening weekend. It looks so fresh and fun, and captures the essence of Miami's vibe!

Just saw your interviews with Karisma Kapoor on NDTV; wow, she still looks stunning. With all the movies you're producing surely you can find something to lure her back to the silver screen (and maybe something as well for the criminally underutilized Rahul Khanna; who, even in the simple garb, looked amazing.)

Oh and speaking of fashion, I'm curious if you have gotten hooked to Project Runway? It's such a great peek into fashion, the creative process, and the behind the scenes drama in getting it from work room to runway; and Tim Gunn as their mentor is absolutely fabulous (seriously, you'd love it).

Hi Karan,
I just watched "A Wednesday" and agree it was a gripping movie and had excellent performances by all involved. I am not sure about the ending dialogue and the message it seemed to portray. I always feel is is right when people say not to fight injustice with more injustice if you know what I mean. Like two wrongs don't make a right. One might seem fair, but it is like you are stooping to the same level. I am talking vaguely because I don't want to give details and spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it. This is a quote I happen to come across today and wanted to share with you:

A superior being does not render evil for evil. Never harm the wicked or the good or even criminals meeting death. A noble soul is always compassionate, even toward those who enjoy injuring others or who are actually committing cruel deeds--for who is without fault?

-Ramayana

I hope you do wonders with your movie "Khan" like you always do. Love you and take care!

I agree with yr opinion on A wednesday.
I am writing this for a question on Dostana.Do you have SRK doing something special in Dostana or is it your first movie without him.
I always admired your freindship and hope it will remain forever.

yes Karan, "A Wednesday" was a one in a million experience, nothing like this was ever done in Hindi, but even greater and heart warming was to read YOU. I wd tell my class that this new breed thinks in their sleep and I now know was right. Infact we have had a spate of three lovely movies in the past 3 weeks, Wall.e, Rock On!!, A Wednesday and one nearly as bad where story telling goes, "The Last Lear"(even if you see it as an acad debate bet two ideas of theatre and films, you are still so restless with it, neither works wth the rt brain nor wth the left, I think Preity was wasted)...I hope Dostana wd be smthng like KANK. All the best. Also I hope someday u do some more work on the Indian Rockers from a more serious POV. Take care.

Maybe you have already recd. this I had previously also attempted to get this across to you. This is my last attempt. Consider it a sixth sense thing. Bizzare! I know!

Ever think of remaking a Rishi Kapoor classic "Yeh Wada Raha" with the original song. Please consider it.

I know Bizzare!

There conveyed...out of my head.

All the best.

Ps: will it sound extremely rude if I say that I enjoy your writing better than your movies. You paint a picture with words....should write a book.

Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par, is India's official entry to Oscars. His natural style of acring and getting into the skin of each character is admirable and inspirable and from street romeo to patriotic to romatic image, only aamir is genuis

PS: Farah, Karan and Shahrukh - u carry on your work of keeping the 'Filmfare' folks happy and collecting your awards. Also continue making frivolous movies - suits you well because of your limited talent; to me from 'Dil to Pagal Hai' to 'Om Shanti Om', in all movies, I find SRK's acting very similar. Guy with a set of 5 or 6 standard expressions and a monotonous style of dialogue delivery. Wonder what Manirathnam felt after working with SRK.

Karan, you too continue your research on new york and london, tailored made film for mass urban youth upper class society people, because you are a frog in a well, whose world is limited in that circle

hi karan...
interesting view you have on nasirudin shah... but just for the sake of discussion lets have him and shahrukh on two panes of a balance. on one side is an actor who as u said has learnt the art of acting without acting and on the other side is an actor who knows how to act his part... we can also say a commercial actor v/s a parallel cinema actor or a star v/s an actor... why am i saying all this to you... cos karan i find it really hard to define an actor... is he the one who creates magic on screen or one who creates magic at box office?? What is the definition of an actor??? i would really love if you give us your def of an actor and also major differences/similarities b/w an actor and a star....

Hi Karan,

Thanks for letting me know about "THE WEDNESDAY"......superb directing, superb movie and yes ofcourse Naseerudin and Anupam were at their best. Naseerudin has shown from time to time that this is what acting is all about. You were also right about his speech nearing the end of the movie.

When you first wrote about this movie on your blogg...I just thought ....haa just another movie on bombs etc etc.....how wrong I was ...

Well done..thanks for your choice......

A week to go before Dostana Songs are released .....good luck..I'am sure like any other Dharma Movie..the songs will do a bumper bussiness.

Take Care,

Hi Karan,

I've suddenly been working with a lot of people you've previously worked with. (Krishnan Iyer, Snehal ahire and currently a boy named Pavel, who's I think casting for one of your films. My only question to all of them was 'how was Karan to work with' and everytime I ask that, I see a rise smile on their face followed by 'Oh, he's great'.

:-)

You seem like a nice guy. Hopefully, I get to work with you some day bro.

PS - Can't wait for Koochie Koochie hota hai. Hahahah.

Karan,

I am sorry to say that i would have to download the music of Dostana on a torrent site rather than buying a CD. How long does it take for Bollywood to realize the importance of digital music in this new age? Don't you see so many people with iPod's these days? Don't you guys get it ?!?!?!

iTunes is such a revolution here in the states and $0.99 per song or $4.99 per album is very much affordable. Only if Bollywood worked with iTunes to get their content on there so everyone across the globe can access it. Even if it is not for the people in India, would it not make business sense to have it available for the millions of NRI's?

I would love to buy the music of 'Dostana', but only when you guys release it on iTunes or any other site which sells digital music. Till then, Happy Downloading!

Unfortunately, I can't comment on your actual entry, as I haven't yet seen 'A Wednesday'. (Living in a small American town with a practically non-existent Indian population does rather limit one's exposure to recent Hindi films, sadly.)

Anyway, what I really wabted to say was that I just saw the newest promo for Dostana, and wow. I didn't think I could be more excited for this movie, but I was wrong! Which makes it all the more annoying that there are no theatres anywhere near me that show Indian movies. >.<

So, yeah, I just wanted to pop in and congratulate you on making what looks to be a really fun, cute movie. :)

P.S. Also if there's any chance, I'd love if you could confirm or deny a rumour for me! Wikipedia claims that Disney is doing the animation for Koochie Koochie Hota Hai, but I thought an Indian animation studio was animating it. Which studio is doing it?

I found "A Wednesday" an absolutely captivating movie. I loved it. Very well made! Of course, i've always thought of Nasrudein Shah as a superb actor and he did a great job in this movie. The story line was very unique for a first time story writer. The entire movie was a mystery. Everytime i thought something would happen, something else would happen. It definitely had me on my toes the entire time. With every scene, i kept thinking to myself, what's next, now what's going to happen, and now what.

Great dialogue towards the end. Very controversial but very true. People were applauding in the theatre with the dialogue, "I'm just a common man".

Watched Rock On as well and thought it was a totally pathetic, hopeless, waste of time movie. The entire movie was shot in the dark and it was just so slow and depressing. It was so hard to just see the faces of the people, i felt like i had to strain at every scene, and i don't have bad eye sight. Totally garbage. I could'nt wait to leave the theatre. And the music after every scene was terrible....I know they were part of a band, but the music was alternative and it drove me up the wall with boredom. What was even more frustrating is i couldnt fast forward all those songs..Did they really have to have 5-10 minutes of that pathetic music. They could've just done with one minute of those songs...I wouldnt even pay $2 dollars to watch that movie.

Karan

First things first - I get the impression from reading your blog -you seem to have this thing about doing something arty farty and different/deep.

Apologies in advance if you think my opinion is ill informed but I think a film should offer entertainment and value for money. For me and dare i suggest most people - seem to think your films do give that. Let me tell you this - I'd never seen the same film in a cinema more than once in my life and have not done since KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI.

So chill out and carry on doing what u do best - thats not to say don't try new things but all im saying is dont get hung up on it.

Not sure you'll get back after my slightly cricitical piece above but I'm in the process of writing a screenplay for an indian film but its in english. (As I dont know how to write hindi/urdu - born and bred abroad) Appreciate that your really busy and cant cater to everyones request but it would mean the world to me - if i was get any sort of feedback on my screenplay and any advise you would have to offer on copyright en all.

If not .dont worry.take it easy and stay happy..(in any case methinks a person who makes a lot of people happy should stay happy).

hi Karan,

i am a big fan of yours and always look forward to watching your movies.

would like to say something about what you just wrote, on not downloading music. all those who download pirated music online use them on their computers, ipods, mp3 players or jukeboxes, which necessarily requires songs to be copied to the computer. Moreover, it's really painful, for a computer-freak, to buy a CD from a shop then rip it using some special software and then use it. So, obviously, they choose the easier, less painful way.

My point here is, original music should also be available online (in downloadable format) which will discourage atleast some people from downloading pirated music.

kind regards
abbas

I have written a review on the movie "A Wednesday". Please check out.

Terrorism has different perspectives. Recently, we saw two of them on the big screen - First, "Aamir" where a NRI Muslim Doctor, on his visit to India, is asked to explode a bomb in a bus because his family is on a gun point and secondly "Mumbai Meri Jaan" where impact of bomb blast on six different lives were showcased. Every perspective has its own meaning. Some agree and some of the disagree. The rest of them choose to stay away from the topic. Last week, another perspective was released in the form of a movie named "A Wednesday".

The movie has an unique story which has never been attempted ever in Indian Cinema. On a given Wednesday, an anonymous person (Naseeruddin Shah) calls the Mumbai Police Commissioner Pranav Rathod (Anupam Kher) and threatens him to blow the city by planting 5 bombs at different places. In return, he wants four jailed terrorists. At the first instance, Mr. Rathod thinks about it as a crank call but the caller assures him it as a threat once he informs about one of the planted bombs in a nearby police station. So all the action takes place to get hold of him but everything goes waste and ultimately, the police and the other concerned authorities decide to succumb to the caller's demand. The rest of the exciting story is meant to be watched on the big screen.

I have seen a lot of good movies but this movie is really special. I have hardly seen a fast paced film in Indian Cinemas as this one. No required or unrequired songs, no silly jokes but yet entertaining and hard hitting (rare combination!!!). I am not sure whether this movie will be trendsetter or not (in terms of pace), but I wish it should be one. Not only the debutante director Neeraj Pandey excels in the Directing but also has an upper hand in story and screenplay. Some of the dialogues in the climax give you goose bumps and at times you feel like clapping and blowing whistles. Cinematography is restricted to the static nature of the film. Most of the movie is shot either on the terrace or in the investigation room. But still it works in the climax. Background score tightens the grip of the film. Action is not breath taking but is very realistic.

Performances - Lets start with the other actors. Jimmy Shergil does a good job of short tempered cop. Amir Bashir cracks a few jokes in between but is adorable on screen. Deepal Shaw hardly acts but I guess the role suits her voice more than her face. The characters in the terrorist role had to look and act bad and they do it nicely. The rest of the cast is apt and suitable.

Coming to performances of the 2 stalwarts. An advice for all upcoming actors - please go and watch this movie. One does not require six pack abs to showcase his talent of acting. Om Puri once rightly said that Naseeruddin Shah is the best actor in the country and I seriously feel he is correct. He is outstanding.

If one side of the coin is so shiny, then how can the other side be rough. Anupam Kher has put up a great performance in what you can term it as a subdued character. A character who always have to give up to the demands of the caller yet be strong and confident. Sometimes, I wonder why does a superb actor like him have to work in a third grade movie like "C Kompany". What to watch out for - the scenes where they confront each other either on cellphone or face to face.

I could have talked about the movie more in detail but I am afraid I will disclose the suspense and the hard hitting message involved in the movie. I highly recommend all of you to watch this movie. Brilliant!!!!

Rating -4.5/5

Dear friend:

Lately I have not gone to see much film made in the United States, I am fortunate to live in Europe and this continent is a very good film. The last film I saw and I liked was "I served the King of England" a drama production Czech with sometimes comedy. I also see a lot Indian cinema (at home or in cultural houses), although I have to wait for the DVD edition and watch movies with subtitles because they still do not understand much Hindi with English subtitles (in French or Spanish are impossible to understand, only in English there is a good translation).

Find a movie that you get to your heart or a sense of awakening is always good news. Wait for the premiere on DVD with hope.

We also have to wait for the premiere of Dostana. Is the problem of not being in a place where they can see such films. Patience.

Take care.

I can hardly wait for Dostana to come out. The promos look sooooooo good! I'm do glad that you said Karan that the film would have both humor but dginity in how it treats gay people. You rock Karan.

I have been thinking about gay people a lot since I started watching the story of Christian and Oliver on youtube. It's from a show in the Germany and it's such a sweet and happy and touching love story. Many people wrote in about how they think they can't live as free and happy in their countries and how it is important to see gays on tv and in film in a way that isn't gross or mean.

So many young gays kill themselves because they see no happiness in their future.

Hi this is Jenitta. I saw the movie “A Wednesday” on Friday. I liked the performance of Anupam Kher. His restraint, silences, and body language are pitched perfect.

I think one of the reasons why Naseerudin Shah is a great actor is because he started his career as a theatre actor. It seems great performance is in his every dialogue.

Hi Karan,

I was surfing the web trying to get some info on the one and only KAJOL (I'm a BIG BIG fan) and came across your blog. Before I make any further comments, I firstly want to say that you are a brilliant director and you've made me turned into a sappy "candyfloss" fool (self admittedly). Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was heartwrenchingly beautiful and I suppose it has alot to do with the enigmatic pairing of ShahRukh Khan and Kajol infusing life into the characters. I don't think it would be incorrect to say that together they make love seem so beautiful, inspite and despite the bittersweet sorrows that those emotions have the potential to bring. There seems to be a beautiful clarity in their personal equation and it translates oh so well when they are sharing space. Genuinely, I want to advocate for ShahRukh-Kajol "jodi" to be recognize as one of the wonders of this great universe! It's a crime to see the emptiness their eyes exude when separate/alone but it's such a high to see their eyes glow when they're together (mashalla). And so I genuinely want to thank you for bringing them together as many times as you have onscreen. I think everyone is waiting with bathed breaths to see them together (dare I say in every sense).

On another, it was a nice read regarding the "Fate of 2008." I have not seen Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and so I will not comment but I have seen ROCK ON and was immensely impressed with a film that was prematurely declared a "flop" and a "gap filler." The essence of ROCK ON is in its "real" story which easily connects to the human experience. At some point in time, everyone experiences that "what if" feeling--everyone dares to dream (big or small) and most live to see their dreams unfulfilled and so ROCK ON easily connects with the human emotion to recognize failure and victory. Acting wise, Mr. Farhan Aktar was raw but impressive and Arjum Rampal was a pleasant surprise. It would not be incorrect to say he has grown immensely as an actor. I actually enjoyed watching his portrayal of a self recognized failed man. Watching him made me realize that it's not the situation one is in that matters; it's one reaction to his/her circumstances that SHOULD matter. Rob and Luke fitted the bil of their respective characters well. I personally thought Prachi Desai as Sakshi was immensely endearing, warm and fresh. Although the character was underveloped, this gal's portrayal made one want to shake the "aloofness" out of Farhan's character. I know she's very recognizeable as the Bani of television but in Rock On she was simply Sakshi and to have broken away from the Bani mold is extremely commendable. Dare I say it --she reminds me of Rani Mukerji and Kajol - immense potential coupled with an identiable and endearing simplicity and innocence.

However, at the risk of singling her out, I respectfully disagree with your take on the gal playing Arjun's wife (I believe you said her name is Sahana Goswani). It was the best OTT acting I've seen in quite some time. Pardon my language but I wanted to bitch slap her! She was overtly loud and made me cringe. The character was well developed and multi-dimensional yet I couldn't sympathize with the character and for me that is a reflection of the actor (rightly or wrongly).

In short (ahem ahem, that's an understatement considering I wrote an essay!), it was nice reading your blog. Best Wishes.

Take Care,
Twinkle

At the moment, in Munich there is a famous festival. It is called Oktoberfest.

We're missing you!!

Please tell something about Mnik. I collect all the news about it.

Hello, Karan,
This is the first time seeing your blog. I spend so much time on Big B's. I'm looking forward to Dostana. The promo is so funny. I will buy the CD and if I like it, I'll play it on my college radio show. A Wednesday never released in NY. It seems only a portion of Hindi films release here now. I had a great time working as an extra in KANK twice. I hope to see you in NY for My Name is Khan. I've only seen a few Coffee With Karans because my DVD of them is messed up but I think it's a great show.

Hi Karan,
at first, I'm sorry for my English, because I don't have a working knowledge in English, but I want to thank you, that you make new films with Shahrukh and Kajol.
Your films were all super hits with this perfect couple of Bollywood:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham.
I love these two films !!!
You are a perfect director and Kajol and Shahrukh are perfect actor, therefore the next film can't be bad.
I'm sure that the film will be also a super hit or I hope it... I don't know, I don't want to make a hasty judgement. =)
I can hardly wait for the film with Shahrukh and Kajol =D

I wish a good night to you =)

P.S.: Please, give my kindest regards to Shahrukh and Kajol

Attention, Karan -
1. The dostana soundtrack is good. Jaane Kyu and Desi girl are exceptional. Khabar Nahi is ethereal. Ma da ladla is hilarious - in terms of lyrics and the treatment. Shutup and Bounce is very average, though. "Peppy" sure, but that's about it. Kuch Kam will probably grow on the listener.
POINT: VERY GOOD, BUT NOT INCREDIBLE. Could not accept it if it were a film directed by you, yourself. You need to set the bar WAY higher for my name is khan.

2. Shibani's script Kidnap has opened to awful reviews. Again, be careful with My Name is Khan.

You can tell I expect the world from you, as I am sure you do too (!).

It's a worth watching movie.
Thursday, October 02, 2008 9:11:36 PM (India Standard Time, UTC+05:30)
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE SHIBANI WRITE YOUR NEXT FILM!!! PLEASE... LOOK AT WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO KIDNAP... I WAS NEVER HAPPY WITH THE WAY FANAA TURNED OUT... I WAS NEVER HAPPY WITH THE WAY KANK TURNED OUT... PLEASE KARAN... DO SOMETHING... I LUV THE WAY YOU NARRATE STORY... YOU ARE BRILLIANT AT THAT... MY NAME IS KHAN SHOULD BE APPRECIATED FOR ITS STORY WHICH IS THE SOUL OF ANY FILM... PLEASE... DO NOT MAKE HER DO THE WHOLE THING... i want My Name is Khan to fair well probably more than anybody else in the world... I really want all the accolades and awards that year to go to MNIK... I dont want nething to go wrong... its been years since we have seen srkajol... and when we see them again it should be in one of the most brilliant films made in history of Indian cinema... I dont knw if you are going to read this... but still couldnt help not mentioning it...

Hi Karan

I am a big big fan of yours from the lovely country Switzerland. I have seen Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (it was actually one of my first Bollywoodmovies) and I truly loved it and I loved K3G and I absolutely loved Kal Ho Na Ho. With this movie my addiction started. And Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was a beautiful movie as well, and it was great, that you shot it in New York again
Some days ago I came across with some Promos of Dostana and I was speechless, I am really looking forward to this movie, I like the cast and I love the music, Jaane Kyun and Desi Girl are my favorite songs ;)
Continue making such good movies and who knows maybe you will be shooting one day in the lovely mountains here in Switzerland

Take care
