This is a humble and honest plea to anyone about to enter our domain. To the Disneys, and the Foxes, and the Sonys, and of course, those Warner Bros. With your vivid, soaring, global logos, your Oscar counts, and your bags of cash, We, the Indian film industry, welcome you to India.

Splashed on yards of paper; the trades, the economic pages, even the society columns, the news of almost every leading Hollywood studio sniffing around for real estate on our side of the world was hardly shocking news. We saw it coming for a while. It does, after all, make perfect, financial sense. It's the biggest benefit of these soon to be solidified deals; the coming together of capital for scintillating, groundbreaking, and oftentimes overindulgent, cinema. It's what we here in "Bollywood" do very well. So welcome, swagatam, take a moment, put down that copy of Variety, and give this a thought:

In our film fraternity, relationships are stronger than contracts. They always have been. It's why I can drop the F word (fraternity, what were you thinking?) so often and know in ever sense, that it's true. Our word is as permanent as ink, despite the bad apples that sometimes give us an amateurish reputation. We’ve been nurturing these equations for years, and we do it sans agents and managers and assistants. Those of us lucky to be raised within the industry have the word of our fathers, our siblings, and those friends that might as well be family. We're small, and we may bicker, but we've sat in each other’s living rooms, and we've built this industry to what it is.

A gesture of support, or an extension of an apology appeals to us more than those big corporate presentations. We like bold and we like technology, but give us a narration, not a pie chart! We might be a little old fashioned in our pitches, but we make films because the nation's heart thumps for it. Appeal to that sentiment, and understand our culture. Employ people who understand this about us, as an industry, and as a country. We're emotional, and we're more connected than you’d think, but we have our patterns. Try to understand who we are as an industry, what works for us and more importantly, for our audiences. What do they reject with morchas and embrace with jubilees? When sitting with your analysts, conduct a human analysis, not a business one. Deconstruct us if you must, but understand us at the end.

Alright, I'll admit it, I was trying to reel you in with emotion. Now let’s talk business. This isn't the age of vaudeville, we like our returns more than the next guy. Win my heart, but definitely, absolutely, help me win some of that gold. We Indians have some sharp acumen, so give us both. Blend the business with the creative. Understand why we know that an item song done right will make you money, and we’ll try to make heads or tails of your paperwork. We've been doing this for years, and our mines are filling up fast. To successfully comprehend us, try a cocktail of de-Americanization, and matkis full of Indianization.

Don't mock. Appreciate. All our formulas? They work! Ask anyone in Peru. Of course, you know this already; you've done your market research, but start to have a little fun with it now. We're a country that experiences almost everything in tsunami-proportioned waves. Cinema, Cricket, Politics. Eat, Sleep, Breathe. This is our pulse and our tipping points, and our fads are certainly worth a study. Tuck away some of that logic, we're built on escapism after all. What's the point of entertainment if it's not just a little bit shocking? In the next meeting, replace "just because" with "what if?" and your entire frame will start to speak cinema scope.

Before I run the risk of sounding too preachy, it is imperative to communicate that the impetus of this thought comes from a place of deep sincerity, written from a spirit of hope, and with the anticipation of successful partnerships in the offing. The future is looking well lit for both of us. We like your films. We copy half of them. We even gape at your process and infrastructure, but respect that we've got one too. This “Bolly” isn’t in a wood, it’s in a jungle, and you've got to understand the law of this jungle.

Love and koffee,

Karan.

"try a cocktail of de-Americanization, and matkis full of Indianization." Well, I followed your words long before and "indianized" everybody around me. In the meantime they live with the dozens of my Hindie-films and my Hindie-music.... and my neighbours also...;-)

But - obviously - you are not only able to create very touching and very long films ... you are also a ble to make time runs faster in India, Karanji. ;-) Your blog-post is from 3rd July 2008, 20:54:48 (India Standard Time)... and here in Germany it´s only 2nd July 2008, 18:53. Not bad! Could you please tell me the trick? ;-)

Best wishes.

Karan - Is the Indian media all FOREIGN owned?
Do these owners have some responsibilty for the lack of ethics, bias, gossip, lies, trash news today. Even the likes of TOI have become on par with the gutter press. The public does not respect or believe news reported by any of these once most respected brands.

The media is the only powerful institufion that has Power but no RESPONSIBILITY. It is Unjust and Unfair.

This imbalance in power really encroaches on our rights. There is no freedom without fairness, values. It is the public whose rights are encroached upon when the powerful media misues its power as it does not report the TRUTH.

What is your take on this? Films are censored. Why should there not be a body that checks lies or false reports, Is this possible in India? Fines should be imposed or apologies issued like the UK.

I would love to see your direct Hrithik and Ash. I like SRK and Kajol too but want to see something different from you.

Your talk the industry being built on relationships? How hard is it for women? Is it a man's world? Salman Khan tried to stop Ash from working in the industry because of control issues he has.

Ash is a strong woman who survived the big banners and stars being banned by Salman or his friend SRK. I admire her as a person and actress. She is a star and bankable.

You know her. How did she survive this?

Second:
I wrote alot before, I hope you got that, finally you wrote again, I literally thought it was a One time thing and now ur sitting and laughing and all the comments people have written on your first Blog.
Maybe you didnt get the huge letter I wrote before, maybe you did, i can say cuz I requested that you dont put it up
I thought saawariya was crap man, Music was well but then again I didnt think much of Black aswell. Overrated. Simple movies are better like Andaz apna apna. Or is that no logic movies are better? Super hero movies are Cool Like Krish and Koi Mil Gaya. (but Im mainly refering to Cinema in the west. I thought Iron Man was cool But Hulk..Incredible Hulk was waste of my $4.80, thats how much it costs on a tuesday:P
Well atleast let me know if you got my letter..So I dont keep waiting..cuz seriously I checked this site like everyday but didnt see a new post or anything in my email that i gave. Or a call...maybe Im being silly..But who is to judge me eh.

Well, I must admit that this is not what I was expecting and before I get started, I have to tell you something. Your creativity is really something. If one reads the blog title for a particular day, you see how the title plays into the body of the post. "When it Reigns, It Sours..." a play on When it Rains, It Pours phrase, and today's post "East Side Story" a play on the Hollywood Musical called "West Side Story" and on top of that the post itself deals with Hollywood Studios who are now beginning to take a keen interest in Indian Cinema. Creativity & imagination, I must say, are things that you have a surprising amount of. Perfect for a director! No wonder you're so good.

Onto the post. Well, I'm actually rather surprised to see that Indian Cinema still works by the 'I give you my word' format. How do hold somebody liable for something if they go back on their word? I can see why Hollywood Studios would want to deal with Indian Studios in the same manner that they are used to here, since they want to make sure that there is accountability. It is a business after all and that is the only way they treat it. As a business. Then again, thought perceptions in the West in relation to Cinema are polar opposites of those in the East.

You folks are much more easy going and laid back to the point of, to a Western Eye, incompetence. Seriously, last time I went to India for a vacation (visit the grandparents and other cousins, etc.) I was SO damn frustrated with the lapse in infrastructure. Not to mention that the electricity kept dieing on us. I know that my peeves are rather trivial, probably because I take them for granted here in the US, and I like people doing their job and not lazying about and feeding off the nation's resources. When I see people being lazy when they should be working, it pisses me off to no end and I saw that a lot in India when I went. Of course, that was 3 years ago. Maybe things have changed.

Well, I'm due for another vacation to India mid-July and we'll see if my perception has changed. Should be interesting. I'm traveling alone for the first time in my life. Kinda looking forward to the adventure. :-)

Why do Indians use the word fraternity ? Why do you always say on awards functions May we call upon the stage ?
It seems that we need to change the way we conduct the lines used at awards functions.
Take a tip from how the Oscars are conducted. I would like to add that I do enjoy the fun and joke aspect from the hosts.

well once you said in an interview, Yash Raj is the perfect balance of business and creativity then why are they failing to deliver on both the fronts, having said that I think Aaja Nachley and Chak De were good, but the rest not upto the mark, and what was Tashan about? Would you still say that Yash Raj model is the best one? I love the way UTV does things these days, look at their products...extraordinary...back to back good films and making a decent business as well, hope Dharma Productions also succeeds in associating itself with good and only good films, hope Dostana works for you otherwise once again, SRK is there to help you out just like he got Yash Raj out of the mess by doing Chak De!

Someone mentioned that Zohra Sehgal (96 years old ) did not get
recognition at IIFA . I feel that the Indian film industry sometimes forgets some people worthy of recognition. Do you know that
going back to those days of black and white movies Zohra used to choreograph dances ?
I was also disappointed when the senior actress Manorama who passed away just a while back was not given due recognition for her long and excellent role in Deepa Mehta's Water. I could not find Filmfare's email. I really wanted Filmfare to give her an award , some recognition for her performance in Water. Alas she passed away. I was so sad.
This is not to take away from Mumtaz her lifetime achievement award.

Karan ,
The last time the nightingale sang a song was the title song of K3G for your movie and it was on the charts for a long time.
We have not heard her voice lately. Perhaps you can convince her to sing one for your My Name is Khan. Even if it is a song that can be used for background situation.
I also have another suggestion:
Now I have another suggestion. Millions of SRK fans around the world have wished to see him in the same frame of a movie with the thespian Dilip Kumar. Saira Banu quite some time ago said that if she and Dilip were to have a son he would resemble Dilip.
Now I have read that Dilip Kumar is not always in good health but he has been seen at several appearances in these past 2 years.
I do not know as to how his speaking ability is. The movie My name is Khan from what I have read is a real life story and I take it that it is a Muslim based story. Karan has taken a chance in making a serious movie instead of a popular commercial venture.
It came to my mind that perhaps there is a situation that can see Dilip and SRK together for the first time and fulfill the wish of millions of SRK and Dilip's fans. On my assumption that SRK plays a Muslim character in the movie how about incorporating scenes where SRK's character attends a Friday prayer at a Mosque where the Imam's character is portrayed by Dilip and he would deliver a sermon of peace ( sermon is called Khutba ) . At the end of the prayer SRK's character Khan would be greeting the Imam. Dilip Kumar can be shown with a beard. But the important aspect would be that his sermon would be one of peace instead of a sermon that is anti-inflamatory. The scenes for this can be filmed in Mumbai if there is a problem for Dilip to travel to NY or other US City where the shooting is supposed to take place.
It can also be shown that the US spy agency was observing the SRK's character attending the mosque but they do not discover much as the Imam guides those attending prayers by peaceful sermons.
My other question is that it has been several years since Sep 11. Why is this subject being done now ? Will fans go for serious stuff especially if this movie will be released towards the end of the year presumably for Eid ?

Personally, I'm from the US and I'm not a big fan of all the outside studios going in to make Indian films. Personally I feel we should build from what we have and have our companies go abroad and make films for them. UTV is taking a step in the right direction as it went and made a joint venture with Fox for Namesake. I'm from the US, I was born and raised in NJ, but I think the Indian film industry is better without the outside studios. Yes they bring in money, but there isn't question of us not having enough money, especially when people like Harry Baweja are pumping 60 crores into a film who's effects don't even match 5th Element which released more than ten years ago. We have the money to spend, the thing is it's difficult to get returns considering our market, but as our markets grow, and they are growing now, there will be even bigger budget movies made and we will be able to recover them too, so there's no need for the outside companies to interfere, they ridiculed us at one point and now they want to work with is, I saw reject them as we're better off without them.
Kunal
Thursday, July 03, 2008 9:05:52 AM (India Standard Time, UTC+05:30)
A filmmaker from Los Angeles, I think it will only help to pump more money into the Indian film industry as long as it doesn't replace the money already coming in. More money shouldn't necesarily mean films with larger budgets, but it can mean more risks taken on films with "fair" budgets and novel material. It's going to take a string of well-made, smaller budget films by the Searchlights and Spotboys of the world that though they may not always make their money back, will indeed begin to expand the tastes of the audience through exposure alone. I want my K3G and my MITHYA dammit!

Also, from a strictly economic perspective, with foreign investment added to the existing domestic spend, there is a hope that more/better jobs will be created, more disposable income available, and maybe, just maybe, more people will experience the magic of movies in the theatres (instead of through boot-leg distributors). I know, I know...it would be nice though!!!

Great blogging Karan!

Karan,

Its good to know u think so high of ur fraternity (somehow i cant get this word right), but as in other industries, business sense makes the only sense.

And when it comes to money......everyone is going to follow them blindly...even if they kill the bollywood spirit.

Lets keep our finger crossed.

All the best to you in your endeavours.

Wonderful, Karan.

You just perfectly encapsulated why I love Bollywood, even though I've been living in Canada all of my life. Something about the Hindi film industry speaks to the passions of all Indians across the world; it's a surprisingly integral part of our culture!

I hope that Western corporations will understand this, yet not trivialize it as well. Recent overseas successes like Water and Bride & Prejudice are as different as chalk and cheese, but they both come from the same focus. As long as big business can at least attempt to understand, the future will be bright. :)

Love,

Anita

I think the fraternity plays a big role in making Indian films... and it shows. What struck me and continues to strike me when watching a hindi film is the sense of... man... these people were having a ball while doing the flick. There is a sense of fun, of enjoyment, which carries through to the audience.

I think this is only possible because of the way people feel about making films. Because it hasn't become just business to you... because it is a way of life.

Americans make huge budget films, can run away with most special effects (although there has come some neat stuff out of Bollywood lately) and their stories are larger than life most of the time.

I haven't watched an American film (mainstream that is) in some time... except the last Indiana Jones... and even that failed to convince. I am bored with American films. Most of the time they fail to touch me.

The fun has gone out of American cinema... it's all about money and bigger budgets, bigger effects... bigger whatever. But bigger is not always better. I am somewhat afraid that the American business mentality will destroy Indian cinema if you aren't careful. But I can see you do have a watchful attitude.

Don't let the globalisation do with Indian cinema what it has done with so many once people owned businesses. I work in a place which is still owned by a person... and that makes a huge difference to how things are done and run. These people love their enterprises... and they understand that their enterprises work because of the people. We are still humans... and not exchangeable numbers to them.

That same human spirit pervades Indian cinema... and that is what distinguishes it so much from the American cinema. I would hate to see that go just when I have finally found again something worth watching.

As always... a thought creating entry. It's a pleasure to read your blog.

Yours
B.Rohrer

Hi Karan,

This blog gets better with each post ! Compliments on your excellent literary skills.

Everything you say about Hollywood and Bollywood is true. Hopefully, some of the good things about BW will never change. But what about the bad stuff? There are still far too many movies that are a pathetic mishmash of plagiarised elements; too much dependence on songs-and-dances to pull in the crowds. So much vulgarity too - barring a few evolved souls, Indian film-makers hardly seem to care that the images of skimpily clad women (for no rhyme or reason) and suggestive dance moves are being incessantly beamed in U-rated films at millions of young kids.

Basically, there's still a lot of trash being churned out. Why don't you take a look at what's going wrong with Hindi films? Would love to read your thoughts on that. In truth, that's what gives your fraternity the tag of 'unprofessional'.

Hi Karan,

Firstly, I am not going to tell you all those cliché words such as am your great fan, I love your movies and all that. Rather I would love to tell you that you are a genius (of a rare class), your movie making style recalls the type sketched by Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra (I didn’t mentioned some names for they belong to your age/time). Previously, we had a particular idea about the ‘Director’ and I think you have elevated it to a level of an entertainer – a Director who can act, dance (even on the street. Remember!), host shows/award functions (now waiting for you to sing).

Now back to your movies. They are really praiseworthy, the most excellent thing about your movies are their Dialogues especially the funny ones which shows a touch of wit and brilliancy. You know I have seen K3G for more than 25 times (well only thrice at hall). This movie shows a bond of relationship which is somewhere missing today. We are all total three in our family (me and my parents), but after watching your movie I really wished, what if I had a big family made of some brothers and sisters.

Anyway, let’s come to your last one, KANK. I don’t now whether you have read or not John Osborne’s “Look Back in Anger”, but if yes, then you must know that you have done what Osborne couldn’t and I salute that audacity. Let me tell you some of its aftereffects; two of my friends have bid their beloved ones to depart, while most of them are still looking for a better one.

It is not so easy to get in touch with the people you adore so thank you very much for giving us that opportunity. Well I have lots more to tell you, and will definitely waste you time some other day.

ok Karan,

Karan Sir,

I am Much relieved with your assessment and presentation. Its much Indian and to the present times. Yes we are emotional fools. And I believe we are happy with that. We still got our independence. We survived the Internet. Soon we will be the largest commuity to be connected to the new toy the CELL PHONE. We know how to embrace technology. Rightly Said. We may be late and lazy to get our BASMATI patented though. Never mind, the youth and the coming generation will be able to take care.

Yes you have to have an Indian heart to write our stories which appeal audiences across all sections of society. What if some of them have turned NRI's now. We want our cinema to make us CRY and LAUGH in public (theatres).

Relationships are better than any CONTRACTS any time. Absolutely.

HATS OFF TO YOU!!

i like this post.
having said that.. it's not like if you were offered a good 'deal' you'd say no :).
but yeah i would liek to add that hollywood works in a very mechanical way. and at the end of the day what see is not a film, but a 'product'. seriously! (esp. the big studio movies).
it has happened so many times.. its something equivelant to a fast food meal, rather than a full course menu at a good restaurant! if you know what i mean :) a strategy i think YRF has also been kind of taking on since the past 1-2 yrs.. with movies like jhoom barabar/tashan/thoda pyar../laga chunri.. and we all saw the outcome.
indian film audience dont need products, they need an experience.

i love the fact that indian films are -as srk once said- 'kitsch'!
that's their appeal, and what people like most.
i hope these ppl don't come and start holywood-ising it all.

'This “Bolly” isn’t in a wood, it’s in a jungle, and you've got to understand the law of this jungle.'

Lovely sentence. Realy njoyd reading dis one. Can u tell me where 'holly' is? I can itz neither in a jungle nor in wood - Itz on a mounatin. lolz. I know the international producers would never be able to break the trend on indian cinema. As u said they would have to do it in our way, or else Sayonara baby.

IS THE CASTING COUCH IN BOLLYWOOD OPEN AND IN YOUR FACE?

MY QUESTION IS IN RELATION TO THE INNOCENT WHO GET COUGHT AND USED NOT THOSE THAT WILLINGLY SLEEP AROUND TO GET TO THE TOP.

YOU BEING FROM A FILMY FAMILY AND BEING A MALE ARE PROTECTED BUT WHAT OF THE POWERLESS GIRLS WHO NEED THE JOB TO SUPPORT THIER FAMILIES????

Dear Karan,

I read your blog very carefully, because I do not want to miss a single word. You have a writing style I reallly like.

The topic you have chosen I thought about it for a longer time. I am not from India, I am from Germany. I was really afraid that there will be a time, when the big Hollywood-Studios try to absorb the Bollywood-productions. This would mean that the diversity of the world cinema once will be gone, this makes me really sad.

Here in Germany the Indian Cinema reached us a short time ago. 5 or 6 years earlier you would have found only a few people who watched these movies, and in shops you wouldn't have found any of these films. This changed a lot during the last years. And I am very happy about this.

When I found my way to the Bollywood-movies, it was like to find something I've lost long time ago. It is very difficult to explain in English, even to explain it in German, but I try. I like Hollywood-Movies. Many of them, but of course not all. Most stories are copied from older films, from books... - of course, then this superheroes-thing, that is very unreal, but sometimes I also like to watch it. But now I come to your kind of cinema:
It is also very special, your industry produces more films a year than Hollywood does - in another way, but your audience all over the world like to see this. You have more people watching the Indian-Movies than Hollywood-films. Because they are special. You not only watch them, you fell them - almost all of them. You understand them without being able to speak one word in Hindi, or reading the English Subtitle. Not all of them are good. Sometimes the music fails to attract the people and the film follows the music. But you find failures also in American movies. Your cinema speaks an universal language which can be understand from all people around the globe. Feelings are universal, superheroes who save the United staates are not! Most American films are about to save their country, to save the world, that is what they want to be like. The most important country of the world. Also in their movies.

Another important aspect, which I think will get lost in the case they absorb your films, is the soul of your films, the music. I, We all love the music in your films. When I heard the music of "Kabhi Khushi Khabhie Gham" for the first time, it feels like coming home. There is no other way to explain it. I never could stop listening to your music. The music is so full of life, so emotional - I can only pray that Hollywood wiil not destroy the Indian way of filmmaking.

They will not invest their money without having a voice in decisions for the film and that is what I am afraid of.

So dear Karan, please, do not let them change your kind of cinema. I know you do not want to produce bonbon-cinema but you have to accept also, that you belong to Bollywood. You are very deep connected with this industry. Be proud of that - you should be. It is a kind of a national identy. This is what many Europeans lost. We are not longer Germany, France.. etc. no we are Europe. My identy (chosen with heart and soul) is in a way indian, no matter that I live in Germany.

Thanks for all you films, the emotions you gave us. Also writing this blog is special. Thanks for that.

With lots of love, and I hope to see you one time here in Europe-Germany!
Bye, Take care Kathy

It is indisputable that in this globalized world, money is more important for those who have too many things. The whim becomes necessary at a given moment, when the limit goes up a level needs. This level is given by the same society in which we live, culture and the amount of "things" that have people around us.

Often there is more emphasis on the things to people. And many other more importantly “what” is someone as “who” is.

This vision of things changed suddenly when something really important happens to someone you care. An unexpected accident or death, an illness, something that makes you think what's important.

And in the end, understand that the important thing is to enjoy the people who want and you love and you realize that small things around you, which are “really necessary”, are not paid with money.

Take care.

Marianne,

Never americans were sentimental. They see nothing beyond top
of personal nose. And if as seen , that otherwise, there is in error be. It is obliged to defend indian cinema (movies) personal identity.
Thousand year ago so as Arianie, they will want to subordinate Bollywood. They will protect and compliment him (it) originality.
But take advantage for for achievement of personal increment only potential . It is obliged to protect it has that most valuable Bollywood. Personal separateness, originality and independence.
And if anybody < somebody > has to dry increments from it, then India only.

Hmm...well... I liked the last line: "This “Bolly” isn’t in a wood, it’s in a jungle, and you've got to understand the law of this jungle."... King of reminds me of when Vivek Oberoi got lost in the jungle and made a few mistakes/broke a few "laws", for which he is paying till now (and will probably pay forever)... Haha... Keep it up, Karan!

God bless you.

If the "Sony's" come to India and make movies like Saawariya, which WILL be remembered in years to come as one of India's finest movies (regardless to the rants people have against it at the moment), or if they are joining with our finest company like YRF to give Indian animation a new name/image (read: Roadside Romeo) then they all are really and truly SOOOOO welcome =)

the actors and directors don't need to get hollywood to be recognized worlwide , A sample of this is shah rukh , here in peru I do not know fan clubs of hollywood's actors but there are lots of fan clubs Shah Rukh that we follow his career

Thank you for writing, I'm happy that Karan Johar wrote Peru,
I dream of the day you come to peru to premiere one of your movies, that day will be like being in heaven

Karan here, there are many fans who want to write but only speak Spanish, is very difficult for me to write in English, but I say some friends to write and no matter whether it is Spanish, because there are also translators

Please give my greetings to Gauri, Aryan, suhana, Shehnaaz, Hiroo your mom, Farah and their babies and my prayers are always for you

all the best karan, be happy

KARAN KARAN KARAN PLEASE ANSWERE MY QUESTIONS!!!!!!!

Q. Shahrukh tells in his interviews that he used to call your father “Tom Uncle”, but never tells why. My question is why “Tom Uncle” why not “Yash Uncle”?

Q. Director, actor, host, judge. What next?

Q. K3G or KANK?

Q. We all liked you as Raj’s friend in DDLJ, and in real life you and SRK are known as good friends (if you really mean what you say). Don’t you think that you should sketch this friendship on screen also? Trust me that will be treat for both of your fans. What do you think?

Q. Now a days we see that so many star kids are coming to the industry. If you are asked to launch one which star kid would you love to launch in near future?

Q. Some part of media are reporting that My Name Is Khan is going to be a song less flick, while according to some it’s music has been composed by S – E – L. Which is the true one?

Q. You keep saying in your interviews that you don’t have any girl friend. Do you think we people are idiots that we will believe that a man of 36 doesn’t have any girl friend. I don’t think you should hide her name, well, unless she is a “Maya Talwar”. (Please don’t be angry, it was a joke). So what her name is?

Karan!

Where is the time to understanding sensibilities and the nitty gritties of culture when business is concerened? If this was the case then Thai food would not be the most popular cuisine today (By the way, the Thai dishes that we eat at various American fast food restaurants is almost nothing like original thai dishes). Besides my stupid analogy, their idea behind it is -

" take what sells, but sell it OUR way"

They make no sense when it comes to business sense, they have no consideration while being considerate to corporates. Shareholders dont care, as long as they get paid.

though Karan I have one big request
can we have koffee again with you please?????????

lots of love man!!

Dear Mr. Johar,

I have a few simple questions to ask you. Here it goes, hope you answer them.

1. All of your fans including me really want a Koffee with Karan Season 3. Please please have a Season 3.

2. For one of your future blogs, I think it would be a good idea to answer all of the questions everyone has been asking you.

3. What would you like a 12-year-old fan to call you? (Mr. Johar, Karan, Karan Uncle)

4. This is not a question but what the hell :p - Mr. Johar, you are my idol. If you were a woman you'd be my role model! You are just the best. You made Indian cinema what it is today. You are a huge part of the F word (fraternity :p). Just thank you so much for all that you have done for the industry.

Lots of love,
Araliya

P.S. I think you and Rani make a great couple and you guys should start dating!

Hi Karan, I really enjoyed it again to read your blog, I really
love your style of writing and I think you should write a book one day, I would definitely buy it. You said one time in an interview, that you changed so many times your business and you were unsure which job is the best one for you...I think film making is the best one you could have chosen , because it combines all your strengths, the writing, the fashion, the music, the storys just everything. Keep on writing, making films and everything else u do, you just rock.

P.S.: I'm so excited about your knew film, I hope you will soon come to Germany again

lots of love

Bonjour Karan,

I don't see harm with East/West fusion ….I think most are tired of the same old action crap they see dominating American cinema and are also a bit bored with the man love woman and the whole shaadi end plot in Indian cinema…Similarly the personal level at which Indians perform their business deals is very authentic and totally in contrast to what Americans are used to, yet again, a little Indian passion mixed with some American professionalism can't harm anyone, can it? As some of the posters have mentioned…the way things are done in bollywood are a little on the strange side…how women are exploited to become known or to be given a chance, the casting couch business!! The Underground ties…all that is just a little weird!! Granted Hollywood isn't angelic…but I doubt these issues are the Major problems Hollywood is facing today! I think Piracy and the internet access to movies as soon as they release is the most threatening force to Hollywood and any other film industry nowadays. Followed by lack of originality in thought and execution, but technically Americans are superior to most other film industries and I see no harm in them revamping Indian cinema…As for them Americanizing Indian cinema that is just not going to happen! They know they will hit a hard wall if they even thought of doing that…yet to globalize Indian cinema and make it appeal to a larger audience world wide…certain concepts have to be amended or manipulated…what works for Asians sadly can't work for non Asians. Or if it works for a number of non Asians it still won't appeal to the masses worldwide! I also don't think that movies like monsoon wedding are all that Indian cinema can offer global audiences. Change can be good sometimes…especially good change…it may face resistance like anything new but I think bollywood will benefit from what these Big studios will bring, it should however, take the crème of the crop of what they have to offer (techniques, advice, support, style) and incorporate that with the spirit of romanticism in Indian cinema. As times change, people also change and so does their tastes and aspirations…it's good to introduce new ways to do things… professionalism is definitely a good change.

I really hope that the increasing intervention of Hollywood in Bollywood's market won't destroy the Hindi film culture. It already happend to so many film industries - the French one, the German one, etc.. don't let this happen to Bollywood.
We Europeans are interested in Bollywood because it is different to Hollywood. American movies have become quite boring. Since Jurassic Park they are packing more and more computergenerated effects in their blockbusters, but the stories have become less and less important to them.
Hollywood filmmakers seem to assume the more special effects the better the film, but that's an utterly wrong conclusion. Just look at Roland Emmerich's 10000 B.C. - an overexpensive crap movie. So, please don't emulate them.

@kash: I really remember the German "Heimatfilme". I watched them as a child together with my grandma. And of course I liked them. I am not sure whether I would like them today or not. But to make a decision I say no, I do not like to watch them. The problem is that they all seem to be very cheap productions. That is a big difference to the Indian Cinema, where most productions are of an extraordinarily quality. You have so many wonderful costumes, beautiful popular actors and actresses, who are famous all around the world - ande that is great. Furthermore you find so many emotional scenes in a Bollywood movies and despite this the films are not superficial. And moreover I have to say, I would miss the music nowadays in other films. I got used to it during the last few years.
But I wonder, where do you know these films??

That was a little bit Off-Topic! Sorry!! ;-)

But well Karan, from my point of view (I said this before) you should not change too much your way of film making. The identity of your kind films would get lost.

Take care and god bless you

Wow-really high level of English-language ... I need a lot of time and a lot of coffee for the translation of this blogg-message...
Anyway- Indian cinema works in it.s own way - in the western world we can try to learn something about Indian traditions and culture- step by step !
Emotions are universal -that.s right - and that.s the reason why Indian cinema works - it.s from the bottom of the heart.
-and so the "Americanization" can.t give an injection of poison to the Indian- Film-Industry(I hope so)
In the west the minds are poisoned with the idea, that money is the only target - but the result showed us ,that it is more than wrong
From my point of view I can.t understand the idol-function of the US - sorry! It.s time to change the mind!
I.m sure : Indian cinema take place in the whole world -in it.s own way.
PS.: Imagine - The first bonding with the pupils( from different countries) in my new class was to hear Bollywood-soundtracks - they all knew the music !

Hi Karan,

It's very interesting reading your blog. You're obviously a very prolific writer - albiet a better director. What went thru your mind the first time you read the public's opinion about your personal and professional life? I've always wondered whether Indian film celebs live in ivory walls - or they know anything about the 'real' world around them?

Yes, AB and AK have their own blogs too - but truthfully they are too far stretched from reality to call them 'blogs'. For all you know, there is a 3rd person typing away to glory for them. I assume you write your own blogs? After all, since you are the ambassor for HP, I expect you to be technosexual.

Is that the case? Pl do respond. Thx, Katie.

HI Karan,

This is Arpit Paliwal, I am pursuing my masters in Information systems. I know it would be hard for you to read each and every comment, perhaps impossible. But somewhere inside I felt like pouring out the deepest thoughts I had.

If somebody says you he had seen each and every episode of cofee with karan hundreds of times, If somebody says that you and your wit and repartee on KWK brings smile on his face miles, apart from home here in USA. If somebody says he adores you and your bond with film fraternity. Trust me this is all true....... I am in AWW of you as a person Karan! You are my Best Buddie, een tought only I know it.

I know My best buddie will never got to know this, that how much I care for him!! Karan when yu cried in jeena isika naam hai,my mom laughed you know why coz I cried! I have never seen such a pure hearted person in my life, that too in that murky industry. You rock karan and you too know this...

PLease karan I would be most happy if you just write "HI" to me!!

Hi,
Just well the fool only delivered the opinion not seeing the film. Let's wait, however the plot is interesting and I think that he will be the good experience for SRK. If what is the truth he says that he does not seduce women and does not even know as to do this.To play this in such situation the man, which has not only to adore the girl about above 20 years younger than oneself .... not the counter the task. Should not however leave behind, that this SRK the very good actor and if it would not be sure that he will cope the task he would not accept this part.Opinions will be different after premiere surely, but critics the desire oneself their laws. And the spectator as it will always be the best the critic. He stays us to wait only.Let's arrange beyond this, this who engages SRK, he knows that the hatch does not threaten him rather.Even when he will be the script not the best. We not once were the opportunity already to convince about this.
Opinions circulate that Bollywood can wake only two feelings :love or hatred. Without the regard what this will not be and is well so. Indifference the worst is.

Bollywood is in a Jungle, but unfortunately it doesn't represent the jungle.

If I can extend the analogy of a jungle, then I would say that while Bollywood is in a Jungle, Hollywood IS a jungle, and Bollywood is just a wood.

This is not to say Bollywood isn't great or special. But when I picture a jungle, I picture a place with lots of different kinds of trees, different kinds of animals, a lot of chaos, and yet some method in all that madness. I see a lot of depth and room for exploration.....that to me, is a more fitting way to describe Hollywood. Hollywood has explored various aspects of life on every part of the spectrum, and presents them on screen with characters who have some depth.

I'm yet to see this from Bollywood. Yes, bollywood has a forumla that works in terms of ROI, but what are we working towards beyond that? All these one dimensional characters, and stories that only skim the surface of life-must make it hard for those creative minds working behind the scenes of bollywood, who have to create movies that might be entertaining, but lack depth and an opportunity to explore. If I watch the Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, American History X etc, I see movies that explore the various emotions and life experiences of different kinds of characters. The DiVinci Code gives an intellect an opportunity to think outside the box, V is for Vendetta, though dark, sheds light on the ugly conspiracies of this world while getting into the depths of the wounded souls of the characters. Bollywood, like Hollywood, offers entertainment, but Hollywood, offers so much more. I'm still waiting for the day when one dimensional characters become history in bollywood.

I think Bollywood needs to add to its formula. It needs to understand the depth of the "jungle" it's in, and needs to learn how to represent/comment on it through cinema.

Hi Karan,

what is it that makes us like, love, don't like or hate a movie?

Is it who made it? Is it who is acting in it? Is it who financed it? Is it the story? The setting? The music? Or is it something completely different?

I think most people will have a different answer to this question.

In my opinion a movie is not good because it was made with a lot of money coming from wherever. For me it makes no difference, who makes the movie, who is acting in it and who is paying for it. If I like the story, the actors (whoever they might be) do their job well and everything else fits, none of this is important. For me there are as many good movies from the United States, Mexico, Great Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea, India or elsewhere as there are really bad ones. So something like XYZ makes the best movies in the world does not accur to me. And that's for a country as well as for a producer, director or actor. It is always a particular movie that does it for me - or not.

And what about "melting" talent, capacities or money. Do you think K3G would have been better if you had more money at your disposal? Or would you just have added a chandelier or two? Or do you think that Matrix would have been better, if Neo would have first tried to get rid of Mr. Smith and then danced a bit around a tree in Switzerland? Or maybe you think The Lord of the Rings would have been better if Frodo had sung a song while trying to destroy the ring. Maybe Rang de Basanti would have turned out better if the politician would have been shot in typical Schwarzenegger-style with a machine gun by some guys standing on a moving car which explods after they jumped from it onto a moving train? And what about Mr. and Mrs. Iyer? Maybe a sexy, steamy love making scene played by Konkona Sen Sharma and Rahul Bose would have made the movie a huge success around the world.... Or maybe not. Nobody should try to squeeze something into a box where it doesn't fit.

My highlight of your post? "We like your films. We copy half of them."

So true. But does that make things better? There are really capable authors. Let them write something unike instead of copying crap (remark to myself: try to find out, why Partner was so successful at the boxoffice). I don't think that Indian Cinema lacks of anything. Indian Cinema contains so many tendencies if you think of Punjabi-, Tamil-, Telugu-, Hindi- and all the other Movies. And talking about a versatility of the recent/current "Bollywood"-Cinema: for every over-the-top Om Shanti Om there is a gentle Iqbal, for every dark and tragic Omkara there is a light Jab we met, for every intense and meaningful Taare Zameen Par there is a funny Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

So be proud of what you achieved till today, try to progress and don't try to imitate or copy someone else.

And before I sound like a preacher, it is enough for today.

Here I'm sitting on my bench waiting for your next post and the day when hardcore fans of a certain actor, director or even genre start to admit, that amongst their products are foul apples too and that movies, where those people are not playing a part can be good as well.

Best regards

Kristine
