i have seen promo of your next film "dostana" it looks amazing can't wait to see it. since the 1st movie you came out with i have been loving all of your movies especially with SRK and Kajol. i am looking forward to see this movie and i am sure it would be a great one.

like you said "hate is a strong an emotion to waste on anyone or anything" to be honest its so true because life makes you do certain things even though, you don't mean what you said but at the end you realize it which that counts more than anything. funny thing is that even living in California for many years i have observe that today we still have hate and it won't go away because people use hate word like anything. i rather use dislike because i do dislike Ram Gopal Varma's movies because he is remaking certain movies which i think it's wrong. past shouldn't be repeated it should stay same.

First of all, I applaud your mesmerizing cinema, which has always been very entertaining. Your work is always highly appraised in my home country, Pakistan.

I just saw the trailer of Dostana in cinema, and allow to express that, it will be one of the best entertaining commercial cinemas in the near future, for sure. Specially, after KANK, we are expecting a lot out of this movie, as you are one of the biggest TRUSTED brands of Hindi Cinema.

It will be good to see two hottest hunks in the town involved in moak chemistry and biology, FIRST TIME EVER IN HINDI CINEMA. Girls in cinema were like anything after watching Abhi and John playing with each other.

I am sure you would've thought to put SRK banner as guest appearance which can work it out. I will suggest you to do something innovative in Marketing Strategy i.e by creating DOSTANA WRIST BANDS designed by Karan Johar and distribute them as pairs with the Music CDs of film.

Overall strategy looks perfectly fine and we are expecting it as another BLOCK BUSTER. I really hope this concept is going to rock.

You asked for comments on the trailer. I watched it and think it looks like it might be an funny movie. The trailer reminded me of two things which are the scene with the rose and the two men dancing in Some LIke it Hot (Jack Lemmon was funnier passing the rose in his mouth than this looks) and also the Hollywood movie of last year I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry with Adam Sandler which seems to have quite a similar plot with two men who have to pretend to be gay to get something they need and meanwhile there is a beautiful woman in there too whom one of the men falls in love with but she think they really are gay at first. Is this movie a remake of that one?

Miami looks beautiful Karan. Want to hear more of the music. The cast looks superb and yeah, John and Abhishek seem to have some crackling chemistry. Looking forward to it.

All I can say... lol. Good intro... nice contrast, especially because the initial music creates a particular expectation... which is then nicely turned on its head.

Yep... definitely looks like worth watching... if I get a chance in dreary Switzerland.

Oh... btw... I hope you're not starting to put too much weight on skinnybone hungernail actresses! Looks like bollywood is catching up on a trend which in the rest of the world is hopefully fading! Women are women... and a bit of bounce without bones sticking out is only to be hoped for. I just say it because Priyanka looks very thin in the intro... and I always liked the fact that the indian movie stars didn't need to be abnormally thin.

I saw the promo of Dostana online and it really looks like a different and fun film and I'm really looking forward to the music. I hope Tarun shot an extensive making because I'm sure a movie like that has got to have hilarious behind the scenes moments and even funnier outtakes. The only sad part is that I'll be at Uni when the film releases (Penn State University main campus, you should really visit if you're in the Pennsylvania area, you'll fall in love with the university I PROMISE!) and no theaters screen hindi films in that area. In any case, I hope you and Tarun create a special DVD package for the film (director/actor commentary would be a major plus) and I'm looking forward to the music at the end of september.

hi dear karan, i saw promo of DOSTANA right now. i can't beleave , do you realy make this film. this is promo,and i don't know exactly how is it . but i want to ask you ,what do you want to say by this film? if it was never make ,your sociaty has a shortage. beside we are orientas, and we have somethings that called chastity. you are a filmmaker and you shuld issue this idea. may be its funy, but issue somthing else.hitherto i'm sorry.

Teaser looks okay, but fails to tease. Besides the star cast and the fact that the two leads are faking that they're gay, the teaser does nothing else for me. The only differentiation one can take away from this love movie versus the 1000s of others in Bollywood is the novel "gay" aspect.

I'm not trying to tell you how to direct/produce (I have no qualifications), but I'm just letting you know my thoughts as a viewer.

The 'Dostana' teaser absolutely ROCKS !!! Its brilliantly cut and extremely intriguing, which I guess is the predominant task of any marketing tool. Well, Varma has created some wonderful works of art in the past, I admire him for that, and I cannot put you in the same bracket because I don't like the way your movies turn out. After reading your response to his shittalk, as far as sensibility and temperament go i think you are leaps and bound ahead of him...some kind of trade-off maybe, what he lacks as a man you have it - morals and what you lack as a director, he has it - spunk.

Just checked out Dostana preview...It is HOT! John,Abhishek are hot hot hot......i am in! Miami is refreshing as backdrop.

I have seen the promo of Dostana. I liked it and definitely going to watch it. frankly, it was not that good as kuch kuch hota hai's. but still - I am going to watch the movie for sure.

It is same kind oftriangular love story like old dostana.Any waysur 50-50 profit to SRK will never make SRK #1.Still The Boss (RK)is #1 and Shankar will be ruling the world.

Note: "The Top Directors,Actors,Music Dirs are from South including
actresses in Bollwood. So dont under estimate south that they are
not recongnized(in delhi)when RK got his Best Entertainer Award.

My friend and I went to go watch Bachna Ae Haseeno today, the movie was brilliant, but as I said earlier we really wanted to see the Dostana trailer on the big screen, but they didn't even play it! We were not happy, but at least the movie was good...I'll just have to keep watching the one on Dharma's site...which looks amazing by they way...the movie looks so funny! I can't wait!

Sorry to say, but I'm not going to watch "Dostana" if I judge the film on the basis of this trailer. I think it is "cheap", superficial and a complete waste of time. As for an Indian viewer it might be something new and controversial (I really don't know), for me it touches plagiarism. It is a copy of American "comedy for idiots", as I call them. I grew to love hindi cinema for showing me a different culture and mentality of people, so refreshing in comparison with european "gloom" and hollywood becoming more and more "plastic". Bollywood seemed so refreshingly honest in its dishonesty.

As for RGV, I have no idea who he is. Your comment about him is very mean, so I assume he has upset you somehow. IMO using the word "love" in this context is somehow inappropriate. People should not overuse big words, as they tend to lose meaning, at least coming from someone who uses them too freely. Having said that, I think genuine honest straightforward animosity toward someone is much more respectful than faked love and less poisoning for person expressing it than viscious irony.

All and all, I wish you only the best and I hope my totally subjective opinions are helpful and constructive.

From the promo, Dostana looks excellent. I can't wait until it's out in theatres! Yesterday I was hanging with my friends and we were gossiping about movies and then all my friends and I decided that we will watch Ram Gopak Verma "Phoonk" releasing on 22nd Aug. I asked why phoonk as the promo is looking to RGV previous horror movies "Vastushatra". So whats so special.. Then all my friends said that public are bored of romantic flicks... too many to count. And phoonk will be refreshing, different and enjoyable as me and my friends have planned to watch it on 9-12 show at midnight.. to have some fun, get scared and make other people scared...

Coming back to you Dostana... all your films are based in New York or America mostly aimed and targetted towards urban high class metro living people. I am sorry it shows your research and reach is limited and does not appeal to global audience and most importantly to india middle class people which is majority. You film mostly revloves around Shahrukh, New York, Bikes, cars and foreign location..... just one word.... you are limited

Hi Karan, I saw the Dostana trailer and it is looking in one word, awesome. My exams finish on the same day it releases, so I'd like to think its a case of the cosmos aligning haha. But yes, I'm DEFINITELY going to watch it. As is everything from Dharma, it looks fresh and new, and hence definitely interesting.

Another thing I would like to say is to echo some of the comments above, in that I would LOOOOOVVVEEEE to see Madhuri Dixit in a film of yours, preferablly directed by yourself. Is there any chance of that happening in the near future? I read somewhere she's open to even supporting roles as long as they are of substance, and hey, when it comes to substance, who's better than you at writing roles of substance? Even a supporting role in My Name Is Khan, perhaps, since it is going to be shot in the USA and hence convenient for her. My fav 2 actresses are her and Kajol (both of whom are doing so selective work these days so much so that every movie of theirs is like a landmark event to me) and I would love to see the SRK-Madhuri chemistry again, but more improtantly im dying to see the Madhuri-Kajol chemistry lol. Thanx Karan, for making all the great films you have.

I do not know, whether can I to see "Dostana". In Russia there are no releases of the Indian cinema, only on DVD, and it with delay of year on three.
For example in Russia on DVD has been released "Dhoom" in two years after its official release in the world. And, unfortunately, the Indian cinema does not occupy time in cinema halls.
I do not know the reasons for this.
But, when I was the child (1990-1994) (the Childhood was short:)). A joke.) In any case, I remember, that during 1990-1994 80 % of films at cinemas of Russia - the Indian cinema.
Now in Russia show " comedies for idiots ".
Last joy of my soul - " The Life of others " by Florian Henkel fon Donnersmark (the European cinema). Though, I thought, Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham was over the top and a bit melodramatic, loved the emphasis on Indian values, respect for the parents and respect for your country. But KANK was different, far removed from Indian values, actually quite immoral. So-So promo! Huge fan of yurs, but have to say the promo was not very impressive!

You know what I loved about the teaser/trailer; John Abraham coming out of the water (he owned it!!!) in this pair of yellow (thank god it wasn't SPEEDOS though John could have ravishingly pulled off anything with that bod and dimples) oh yes back to the point would it hurt to mention this again John Abraham coming out of the water in this pair of yellow briefs (is that what it's called) oozing with uber (I am going to say it though I have always considered to be a tad degrading) sexiness! He was an absolute Greek God (I dropped my cookie, it wasn't what I was expecting I just randomly clicked on it thinking it was one of those family oriented relationships sort of movie not that it might not be) I can just imagine myself melting in my seat in the cinema when I do go to catch it even in my impecunious state of being an undergrad (hoping that it comes out in Melbourne on the same day) I would defiantly have the same gasp reaction. And though I have only been taken aback with much elation of that scene I am not shallow or pervese for that matter I saw beyond the whole John coming out of the water *grin* there was other bits of it I very much fancied and appreciated.

I liked the colour palette of the clothes I liked the whole Miami laid back looks and Priyanka looks amazing.I am glad the John Abhishek combo chemistry ;) in Dhoom is being juiced up in Dostana. I am sorry but it's not like there was much to make of the characters with just a teaser but it certainly lured me a captivated audience awaiting more teasers paving the path till it's release.

And yes Karan hate is such an achingly powerful word just mere torturous waste of time I really couldn't agree more and I always thought I was the only one who would categorise a word.

i ws just reading your entry on script becoming the star of a film and searching new talent for the films etc etc... you know it reminded me of a particular moment... you might remember that when you were judging the show 'say shava shava' one of the contestants asked you to caste her in your movie and you very politely told her that darling become a star 1st then talk to me cos i work only with the stars... it made me wonder that why doesnt this man expand his horizons and experiment with new faces?? i mean you gave rani mukherjee to this industry which shows that you have the knack of recorganising talent when it is in front of you... And you no wat karan it would give you a lot of satisfaction if you do so cos at the end of the day it is all about loving your industry...:) and paying back the debt you owe it... for giving you everything in your life...

Priyanka looks HOT beyond reason in the introducing shot, im sure she will be a big head turner, whereas John and Abhi are concerned, they were so funny in the promo, so its just really a teaser of what's to come, my favourite moment is when Abhi does that face gesture of showing modesty, its hilarious....Cannot wait for My name is Khan, SRK-KAJOL a blockbuster in the makes InshaAllah...Best of luck..

You've certainly got Bollywood lovers drolling with anticipation for the upcoming releases. The teaser for Dostana looks promising but it seems a bit short of what I was expecting of a big banner film.
I have a question for you. As bollywood is progressing I find that the films are lacking the cultural aspect as a whole. The only thing I find separating Bollywood films to Hollywood films nowadays is just the language. Bollywood now seems to be carrying western humor, western outfits, western ideas. And sometimes they throw in a desi song just to make it Indian sounding. Perhaps this is a positive direction for bollywood but what about the 80's and 90's Bollywood we've all grown up loving?

he hottest buzz doing the rounds in tinsel town is that Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar will soon turn foes, when their films clash with each other at the box-office later this year. Khan's Billoo Barber and Karan's Dostana, may release on the same day, November 14, 2008.

Our source informs that earlier, Shah Rukh had planned to release his film during the Diwali weekend. But for reasons unknown, he has postponed it by over 10 days after the festival gets over, colliding with his director friend's film.

Karan was looking for a good bumper opening for his production, being a solo release on that day. But SRK's announcement to release Billoo on the same day has raised many eyebrows in KJo's camp.

I went to go watch Bachna Ae Haseeno because I wanted to see the Dostana promo but I was disappointed! The theater that I went to, didn't play the promo for some odd reason. I loved Bachna Ae Haseeno so I wasn't as disappointed as I could've been but I sure missed the promo! I really wish I could sue the theater for doing that to me...
However, I did watch the promo on the dharma site and loved it! It looks like a really funny movie and I'm eagerly awaiting nov 14....

I loved it, but then again I love all his villain roles! K3G again, if it wasn't for Shah Rukh, and Mrs Jaya B I would never watch this film...over the top obnoxious on its own fantasy trip sap stuff....I don't like AB, and I don't fathom him being in EVERY film that SRK is in when KJ is directing!! I don't want to see him again as SRK's father!! especially after all the crap he's been writing on his blog about TRPs and BS!

As for KJ's films being huge successes well, just look at what SIK did at the BO!! So BO returns for sure aren't any indication as to the substance of a film! Give me a Dil Se ANY DAY over the sugar coated candy floss that KJ and FK make all the damn time!! I can watch Dil Se a hundred times and still see it in a different light every time I watch!!...KKHH I watched once!! And between the atrociousness of Mrs briganza and the irritating silliness of anupam kher I was ready to shoot my tv.

I want Shah Rukh to make films he will be proud of 10 -20 years from now, I want him to do a Godfather, a gladiator, a Bond, the Bourne Trilogy! He's certainly talented and sexy enough to do any of those roles...why is he always cast as college nitwit who's over the top and just has no character or merit !

You know since I am a black french person I consider you to be the best director of Hindi Cinema.
Explanation :
You DONT seem to be prejudiced against any groups of people
In any of your movie it seems like you try to give a representation of all communities.
So Kal Ho Na HO is very realistic. the Junior artists in the back of the leads actors are a good representation of the people supposed to live there (espacially in the song "pretty woman") and it's not the case of all hindi movies even if I liked them. For example I have seen Race in London and despite the story takes place in south africa you can only see very few black people and a lot whites.

Sometimes, some of my black friends and I discuss about hindi movies and feel bad when we guess that some directors or indian audience ( I dont try to charge any body as I have never been in india, but I will go on anuary for my studies, GREAAAAAAT) don't like Black people and darker indian.
What a pity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because Hindi films are very successful in Africa and in the black community in France

DOSTANA TRAILER COMMENTS AND WHAT I THINK THE MOVIE IS ABOUT.

The teaser starts of with the KHNH music in the background, slow and soulfoul. I saw the trailer teaser when I went to go watch Bachna Ae Haseeno, unfortunately I had to sit front row because the movie was a full house, but when I saw the trailer to Dostana I knew it was a KJ production. The biggest give away was the KHNH music. Because I was sitting in the front row, I felt like I was sitting in a helicopter, gliding over the water and then flying into the big apple. Along with the music - the trailer sets the tone of seriousness so I was expecting an intro into something more melodramatic and profoundly emotional when it suddenly transitions into a groovy, upbeat, youthful, lively mood. The trailer mood changes from a depressing, serious tone to an energetic and cheerful one. I liked the combination of the 2 extremes because it was unexpected.


The Dostana teaser seems to be a youthful fun movie about 3 friends. At least that’s the impression the teaser portrays. But because it’s a KJ movie I’m sure it has a little bit of seriousness, a lot of love, a lot of emotion and sadness, and good humor. KJ knows exactly how to make his audience laugh, and he definitely knows how to make them cry as well. Watching the trailer I would think it’s just an upbeat movie. But I’m forced to take a deeper and more analytical insight into the movie because every KJ movie has a climax, so if I was to take a wild guess I would think the climax would be that John – who pretends to be gay because he wants Priyanka to fall in love with Abishek, just might be gay. Perhaps the lie that he jokes about has some truth behind it? Sure the movie is a love triangle, but there is a twist. Instead of the 2 guys being in love with the girl, maybe John is in love with his friend – Abishek and Abishek is in love with Priyanka and Priyanka, John but in reality John is really gay! John denies the truth and jokes around about being gay so Priyanka doesn’t fall for him but on a more serious note he’s fearful of how society and the culture would accept his sexuality. The whole story starts with this lie and how this lies gets stretched into truth and how John lives life after the lie is what this movie is about. Conceivably this is when the climax of the movie comes into play when Priyanka finds out the truth that the entire time John lied about being gay, and in reality he really is. I can see intermission coming at this cross road of revelation. That’s my gut feel but I will wait till Nov to find out.

Karan - I love the fact that your last 2 movies have touched on topics that is more close to home and reality. I can see why the older generation didn’t like KANK, because it was based on reality. There are 2 types of audiences these days. The older generation – our parents, who like the candy coated love story with a somewhat unrealistic ending where everyone is happy. Reality is not what generation X likes to watch, because it’s real. On the contrary, the baby boomers as I like to call, my generation, like movies that are real, and that have a realistic ending and meaning. Movies that will make you think.

KHNH, was a beautiful love story. One of my favorite movies that still brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. The ending was a bit dragged by 15 minutes. I think it would’ve been best if SRK just walked away. It would’ve made the audience wander. But we knew he was going to die, so if he walked away the audience would’ve just assumed he died of cancer.

I liked KANK. It took guts to write a script for Indian cinema that showed infidelity being acceptable. The movie “closer” portrayed it as being immoral. And KJ I have to give you thumbs up for showing this in such a subtle but emotional way.

Although I have to say, the trailer that ranks #1 in my list as of today, is KHNH because of the very famous heart beat music in it and the brisk scenes that were in sync with the music. I loved it.

When I first watched your movie, KANK, I hated it. However, as I reflect back to why I disliked the movie so much, I think I've realised it's because the movie really hits you, it brings you out of the "perfect/fantasy/happily ever after" world that you grow up dreaming about, and shows you reality. We all know that these things happen (a lot!) in reality but we don't want to admit it. It takes a LOT of guts and courage to show society for what it is.. (as they say 'sachai karwi hoti hai')

Often times we just want things to 'be okay' without taking any steps. We prefer to stay in a crumbling relationship rather than take drastic measures and risk the chance of being happier. But your movie showed that no, you don't have to stay stuck in a rut, and if someone doesn't love you, there is no need to stay with them just for the sake of society or children or any other external factor. Everyone deserves to be with the one they love, and sometimes (especially in a culture of arranged marriages) you end up falling in love with someone who you are not married to.. or who is married to someone else..

In modern India, we need to accept that a divorce is not the end of the world and we need to accept it. By saying this I don't mean to understate the importance of putting in effort to maintain a relationship, but I wish to highlight that it's equally important to be 'happy' and have the option of a divorce when things are really not working out..

I suppose the second reason I disliked it was because of SRK. I love SRK but in this movie, he played the role of a jerk so well.. that you managed to get me to really hate him.. for people who say SRK can't act - that was an apt showcase of his talent, and for people who say you only make "bubblegum (?) movies" - you showed them that there is a thread of reality running through your movies, even if its subtle, that not everyone can realise.

I'm sure I've just babbled on here.. this is just food for thought! :)

And the most interesting. Ho-ho DeDe, try to organize even five person in work above your project, and very important that there were no idle times or problems.
DeDe, Try to make so that each person of team did work well and in time, that the general idea of project was not lost in routine of each working day.

I am now keen to update you about Dostana. I love the thriller and I know I would be floored after watching the movie. I think satisfying your avid fans are important, but please don't bother so much about the negative comments/reviews in the film industry. It's all about competition. Most often, people make it their personal agenda to be brutal. But so far, you have been handling all these "drama" pretty well! In my idea, criticizing is far more different than insulting. I think we can find both good and bad points in each movie, so we can discuss about it, not insult it!
And about SRK, I believe his mind works better than his body! He is more thoughtful than being sexy (He proved it in chak de india) and he certainly choose the best for himself and no one can be his father.

I've seen progress from "Dostana". I still can not stop smiling. The sight of two "Machoman" as Ahbishek and John behave in a different way to all their records film is as little shocking. As always, your ideas and creations go far beyond anything that has been done so far. Whenever you have something fresh and new with what surprise to all of your viewers. I like. It is a vision that can be very interesting. And, as always, an issue as burning and little is spoken as the subject of homosexuality. Only when homosexuality no longer news when mankind really accept anyone as what it is, original and unique, without barriers, without prejudice and without restrictions other than those necessary for coexistence. Just caught you on Sajid Khans show . I wont repeat the ode to your eloquence which is undoubtedly old tale. But your honesty does shine through. specially the way you answered about Nikhil. Actually you do make an effort to erase bad memories and replace it with good thoughts . So much like what Robin Sharma would have liked to hear. The old monk remember.

I have this strange thought about Ramu. I think he desperately needs your attention and hence the wisecracks. But again you have nicely chosen to not allow animosity to get better of a unintended friendship with him. He does that intentionally. I think there will be a rebellious streak always raging within him if you consider how he has come up in his film career.

More so extreme emotions is what characterises creative people and allows them to invent. You have extreme ability to love and forgive people. Not many people can claim that. No wonder your films plays the role of a filmi old monk. Replacing all the weeds with the green lush endless pastures. NOthing wrong with that.
