I know this is going to sound a bit redundant, but I'm terribly sorry for not blogging in so long. There's been so much happening in my life and in the office that I haven't had a chance to take a breath. So, here's me inhaling some thoughts and exhaling some love and gratitude.

Thank you all, sincerely, for helping to make Dostana the success that it is. It's heartening to know that a film, comedic for the most part, can still make an impact on people’s thought processes. No one's cringing at the image of Abhishek and John frolicking in the sand, and no one’s walking out of cinema halls in discomfort. Rather, the number of repeat viewers in the first weekend itself has been the true testament to the success of the film and more importantly, to the way it's been treated. We've taken a topic that is still largely considered taboo to talk about in our society and used it as the impetus for a hilarious comedy. Our male lead characters are playing gay to their advantage, quite the opposite of those who feel the need to stay in the closet because of the narrow-mindedness that exists in our country. We weren't trying to be controversial or push the envelope gratuitously. Our principle aim is to entertain, but if we can change a few hearts and minds along the way, well, that's precisely what makes filmmaking so special.

For the most part, the response to the film has been extremely positive, but as expected, there have been those out there who have voiced their disdain towards our efforts. I'll be honest; it did bother me, but only for a few short seconds. Anyone who knows me knows how open I am to critiques and opinions from all sides. If I can dish it out, I can take it myself. I'm only disappointed that these - and I use these words very loosely - seemingly literate, progressively thinking members of the media argue that Dostana is offensive to homosexuals. I only wish I had called them to a recent screening we had for members of the gay community in Bombay, who laughed and laughed, cried and left the cinema hall gratified. I don't need to say any more about this because our work here, to put it very simply, is done.

The music of the film still plays constantly in our office. My staff is taking their friends and family to watch the film over and over again with excitement and pride. The buzz for Dostana has just begun and in the lives of those that worked on it, the journey remains an exciting one. I hope you continue to experience the high we're all on right now. Watch the film again - it gets funnier with every viewing.

Love and koffee,

Karan

p.s. I’m leaving for Philadelphia in a few days where Rensil’s film starring Saif, Kareena, and Vivek film has commenced, and will blog about that trip once I get back.

Hi Karan,
Congrats for the success of Dostana.

I still can not watch it.
Do not want to see it on line or on a pirate copy.
Please sell the film to Rapid Eye Movies here in Germany. ;)

Like to write more but I do not know enough English vocabularies.
Maybe you will understand me wrong, when I talk about the theme of the film.

Bye, waiting for your next blog entry.

Karan I'm so tired of my friends trying to read between the lines in Dostana, they're convinced that you did this either with the gay mafia/ against the gay mafia. It's exasperating just listening to them go and on about how the protagonists turn gay in the end. The whole "So...did anything happen?", exchange of looks thing was a light-hearted ending right? It doesn't for god fucking sake mean they turned gay does it? I thought you'd ended it that way because in the unlikely event that Bobby Deol gets the girl, he's still eluded by the happily-ever after in a Dharma Production. The happily ever after belongs to John and Abhishek, the real stars of the film. Atleast this is what I think you've implied..please do reply! (You don't have to publish my comment if you think it'll offend Bobby. Just get one of your gazillion assistants to mail me back!)

Dear friend,

As I said in another post, all subjects of yours films that you do are quite controversial. That makes the people whom we like the way you expect them to do something special, new and always unexpected.

Dostana is no exception. I read a lot about the movie and I've seen everything published so far. I hope to see you in a couple of weeks and be able to comment knowledgeably.

I believe that comedy is always the fastest and most secure way to criticize an unpleasant situation. And if the comedy is smart (as in the case of Dostana, from what I read) the message still reaches more people and seriously injuring too many sensitivities.

As always, there will be criticisms that are not good, but you can not have pleased everyone. There are people who do not see beyond their noses and do not accept others as they are. But such people has always existed and, unfortunately, there will always be.

Needs to be done if only to constructive criticism, but all that is negative hurt a bit. Also, one must be humble enough to recognize mistakes and learn from them to improve the next job.

Keep it up, mera dost, I’m sure that you work hard to offer the best of yourself and the reward is the affection and enthusiasm with which we expect each new release.

Take care.

Hey Karan,

Thank you for giving us dostana....Abhishek and John are like the hot couple. One reason why I think Dostana worked so beautifully is because you cast the right people. I dont think I can imagine anyone in Abhishek and John's places now. Perfect combo...

I think in your films you bring out the side in Abhishek that no film maker really does. Its just perfect..

Regarding the negative comments..I always feel people are biased to your movies...They either love them or hate them...

I've been in the love them category and I think I will be there for a long time... For all those critics out there...Its easy to make a serious, art, social film...But its not very easy to make a love story and make it a super success...To be able to bring variety in love is not an easy task..

And I think you do that brilliantly...Looking forward to your film with Shahrukh and Kajol.. As a matter of fact all of them.

Good Luck !!!!

Dostana was awesome Karan! Only focus on the positive stuff and let the negative stuff take care of itself. The more you focus on the positive feedback, the better you feel and really, who gives a crap about what the naysayers are naysaying? The box office results speak for themselves! Keep 'em coming!!

Dear Karan Johar,

Heartiest congratulations on the well deserved stunning success of Dostana. It is a very charming and specially cheering film for the gay community. In the context of the gay angle of the film, may I have your permission to reproduce my blog on the subject which I published much before the film was released and only the first promo of the movie was out:

Gay Pride Parade In India

The mainstream acceptance of gays and lesbians, a hard-won civil-rights victory gained through decades of struggle against prejudice and discrimination in the West, was also clearly visible in India, when Gay Pride Parades were organized recently without any fuss from any section.

In New Delhi, on Sunday June 29th, it was a mixture of defiance and celebration when several hundred participants in New Delhi's first Gay Pride Parade rallied through the capital, beating drums, shouting slogans and waiving rainbow-striped pride flags. It is learnt that simultaneous marches were held in Calcutta and Bangalore.

Mumbai's first ever Gay Pride march came one day after Independence Day, which was symbolic as it gave greater voice to the primary aim - freedom from Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that criminalizes homosexuality. Gays and lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and straight supporters wore rainbow hats and waved rainbow flags as they congregated for the 2 pm start. One could feel a sense of pride in the air as people thronged the maidan waiting for actress Celina Jaitley to flag off the march.

As if the parades were not enough to strengthen the Gay Pride movement in India, opens the 60-second promo of Karan Johar's Dostana. The video shows leading men Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham as lovers. Without wasting much time, the promo cuts the scene where John and Abhishek are doing the tango, with Bachchan Jr, holding a rose in his teeth. In another scene John announces to a woman, "Hum gay hain!" and pointing to Abhishek adds, "Yeh mera boyfriend hai!"This is the first time that a mainstream Bollywood film with big actors has based its entire storyline around the gay theme. There are multiple shots of John and Abhishek romancing each other, holding hands, blowing kisses, hugging and even lying on top of each other!

There is nothing wrong with the parades and the promo if their aim is to show that gays were regular people, just like you and me, and that the stereotype of homosexuals as hedonistic, sex-crazed deviants was just a destructive myth. But if the organizers of the parades go beyond, and start copying their gay counterparts in the West, it could be intolerable vis-a-vis Indian culture. For example, the parade in San Francisco, intended to "promote acceptance, tolerance, and equality for the city's gay community," accomplished just the opposite, as the event confirmed the worst fears of thousands of non-gay spectators, cementing in their minds a debauched and distorted image of gay life. A photo spread in media chronicled many of the event's vulgar displays which horrified previously tolerant people.

Gay people are just like everybody else–decent, hard-working people who care about their communities and have loving, committed relationships. Looking at the marchers in India, one realized that while so many countries in the West are debating same-sex marriages, here we are still talking about a law criminalizing homosexuality. The overall feeling though was that of triumph. This Pride is a milestone for the gay community here. Slowly and inevitably the walls of opposition will come down. Like a Pride placard said: 'I am here, I am queer, get used to it'.

Regards and best wishes,

Tilak Rishi (USA)

Hey Karan, Dostana was so amusing and cool. And I know it's late in the day but I loved Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. It was such a wonderful movie and it's become one of my favourites. Great work on that ! Have a good time in Philadelphia (it's reminding me of the scene where Rani moves to her new home in KANK after the truth is out.) Keep rocking.Looking forward to all your future films.

hey Karan,

Congrats on Dostana.I saw it and immensely enjoyed it. it was a laugh riot.I was already a fan of abhishek but with dostana i have become fans of john and priyanka too. they were all fabulous. haven't laughed so much in a long time while watching a movie. the dialogues were a riot. baal ki dukaan! you hair less wonder! LMAO.
WELL DONE! Abhi was hilarious.

Special mention for the look of the film.No one comes close to John in terms of looks and personality-he was just divine from the first shot to the last. Priyanka is just so gorgeous that it was hard to take eyes off her in the movie. I'm soo soo soo glad that you took her for this role. Thank God it was not Ash. Piryanka was just too too toooo stunning and lovely. Her best look in a movie EVER. Bobby was charming and the kid who played his son was adorable.

All the best for you next venture with Kareena-Saif-Vivek. You better do justice with Kareena in Rensil's movie in terms of role and look. She is fab, I love her. And also good luck with My Name is Khan. Just the thought of seeing Kajol-SRK together back on screen after K3G makes my heart melt. It has been looooong over due so thank you for bringing them back on screen. This is one movie I can't wait to see.

Take care

hey Karan,

Saw Dostana recently....it was funny...and Abhishek doing that Venice thing, man that required guts...and major major confidence on his part...So kudos to him..!!!And John...wowwwwww....what a physique...Priyanka was oooomph and more ooomph...!! Congrats to you, the director and everyone involved for having the guts to make something like this. You can proudly use the cliched " Its different" while describing Dostana and for once it would be really true.

Also saw this movie " A Wednesday" recently...awesome is teh word that comes to mind..!! Can u make something like that..?? Not belittling ur efforts cos the type of movies u make requires a lot of hard work, focus and intelligence...balancing the drama, emotions, comedy, plus that lavish look..!! But It would be nice to see ur effort on those lines...u know the gritty types, something seeped in reality. Totally different to your lavish productions. Possible???

Any plans to work with Aaamir Khan???

Tarun is an amazing director hands off!
Abhishek stole the show with his comic skills so was John he made us go awwww everytime we saw him! Priyanka n Bobby were equally good! But two people I loved the most would be Kirron Kher and Sushmita Mukherji!
Thank you soo much karan!!! we love you!!!

HI Karan,
Please say I was one of the first to respond
I saw dostana on monday, I watched it on the internet and I would have gone to a theater or just bought the movie, But where i live is four hours away from a hindi cinema and a place to buy original dvd's. I live in a small town in america and i get all my movies from Atlanta georgia, which is four hours away.
Anyways I loved you movie, it was very funny and the comedy was great. From just watching the promos and trailors you would think that priyanka ends up marrying either john or abhi, but I loved the end when she married Bobby instead, because if she would have married john or abhi, there would be no dostana. So overall i loved the film. I also wanted to know if the movie was releasing on a two disk special edition like kank did, I would rather spend more on a two disk than buy a one disk. Actually I have alot of two disk movies because I love watch the bonus matierials and interviews.
I am sure you movie will continue to do very well in the box office for two reasons.
1.) it is a dharma productions
2.) All the serials and daytime are not showing due to the strike so everyone will rather watch a movie instead.
I know this is very off topic but I was watching the making and the deleted scences to k3g, the were extremely funny especially the scene where kajol where the black dress and seducing srk, all of the deleted scenes were extremely funny.

Hello Karan,

I'm writing here for the first time, but I read your comments every time. I didn't really know what I should write so I never took the opportunity to do so.

I am a very big fan of you and your work but I always think that this is something I should not write, because it sounds so meaningless. Never the less t I write this time just to say that I am really happy for you and Dhama Productions that Dostana works so well at the box-office. Since I live in Germany I couldn't watch it till today and I'm dieing to see the movie. The promos looked so great and funny and it's really sad that we can't enjoy the movie in our theatres. I hope there will be a change in the future and we can see the movies here as well.

Besides this I want to wish you a safe journey to Philadephia and the best of luck for your future projects. I am really curious about 'MINK', but I am sure that the story will be outstanding and that you surprise me again.

Lot of Love from Germany

Loved Dostana Karan... for the first time, being gay ( or acting gay ) wasnt considered something to be ashamed of... and loved the way Kiron Kher gave John the bangles... awesome!

Brokeback mountain this isnt, but it atleast shows that being gay isnt something to go commit suicide over.

And absolutely loved how the director showed Sam & Kunal's reaction to Neha's qn... a sequel in the works? :-D

Hi Karan,
I watched Dostana in California's bay area theatre Naz8.com. Overall, I liked, though the script could have been better. I loved the dialogs in parts, like the Gabbar ref. But overall, kudos for making a forward-looking film, though I wont recommend the film to kids (4-15 yrs).

Hi there Karan,

I think you did a brilliant job at making this film. There a lot of people that do not understand and won't even try and then there are those that hide in the closet about it. There is nothing to be ashamed of, a person is the way he/she is. They should feel proud for who they are. I have friends that are gay and they are just as much fun as ones that are not. I think they are better people because they take the time to understand your feelings. This was a big step for you to make this film and I think it will touch people that are gay or ones that don't approve of it. You will always have the narrow-mind crowd that disapprove, you should not let them get to you. These are people that have miserables lives...they can't bare to see others happy. We should live our lives the way that we want to cuz life is too short to live miserable or hiding ones' true self. I am a married women with four kids of my own andvery liberal. I believe in live and let live....everybody has the right to be happy in the decision that they make for themselves. Karan, this world is so corrupt now a days...there is not true love, not loyality or honesty. I wish we could make this world a better place. I totally love the movie and hope you make more movies that teach the narrow mind that there is more to this world then what they believe.... Your father and you have always made movies that have touched a lot of people and I am one out of that crowd that loves all your work...May god bless you with all your future projects. Oh wow, you are going to be in Philly, hope to meet you in person one day, I am in the state of Indiana.. God Bless!!!

Karan,

For once, I loved the movie. I ROFL-ed and LMAO throughout the movie...Just saw it last night...Great job!

The topic is definitely controversial in India and most parts of the world and it was very well addressed...the comic timing of all cast and the screenplay was simply superb!

Hi Karan,

Many congratulations on the fantastic opening DOSTANA has achieved. I wholeheartedly agree with your comments on this groundbreaking piece of Indian cinema, and feel quite privileged to have been, in some small way, a part of this Dharma Productions success story. I have attached a link to an article narrating my on the sets experiences shooting on the film. Please, however, don't throw koffee over me for the Devil wears Prada analogy.

Well, Karan, people who disapprove of homosexuality are not "narrow-minded" by any means. I am not necessarily speaking for myself over here. Yes we need to be 100 times more socially accepting of individuals no matter how they choose to live their life, as long as they are not physically harming other people. But there are some situations where "morality" and the "greater civic good" supercede individual needs. There's no other choice. For example, tomorrow when I get married, I cannot choose to have 2 husbands! XYZ cannot sleep around with his mother and say that she is now his girlfriend! Paedophiles believe they are quite normal. There is a line that has to be drawn somewhere to prevent chaos in society. I personally believe that anything that goes against the laws of nature cannot survive for long. It will take me a few years to make up my mind on homosexuality. I just wanted to point out that concerns over the subject are legitimate.

Hey

Another great blog. Firstly i have read some articles about it being ban in some places, i think that its great that you made this film. It is about time actors and film-makers opened up the subject. It is everyones personal choice if they are gay or not yet made into such a big issue. Love your paragraph on being narrow mindess.

Anyways asides for this not been to see the film since local cinema does not show it. However cannot wait for a chance to. It seems really genuinely funny and i like your films sense of humour unlike some other indian comedy films i am sure it will be worth watching. I have to say john looks fantastic in the trailors and songs are ace maa ka laadla make makes me laugh for some reason but its a good song.

I saw dostana show you did with all of the cast that was too funny thank you for doing that. Abhisehik was hilarious and Johns singing too cute.

Actually last weekend i went to see EK Vivah since i was out of town and the showing for dostana was starting befor our screen. It was really busy ! i think its doing well in UK so congrats.

Hello Karan,
I live in LA (your shooting location for your upcoming movie with SRK!!) and I had been to the theatres last weekend. I am sure you will be really happy to know that Dostana is receiving extremely positive word of mouth reviews! I couldn't catch it last week and will positively do so next week.
Cheers and good luck!! (Hoping to meet you in LA!!)

PS: I am a big fan of your talk shows (and also your movies)!! keep rocking :)

Have you seen this karan wanted you to see it :

Bollywood coming up with all merry n gay attitudes!
The latest movies like Dostana and Fashion have again tickled the long subdued topic of homosexuality to the forefront and into the mainstream cinema.

Although every producer- director teams up to bring a 'hat ke' project, for long homosexuals have largely been supposed to be out of the orbit of the various formulas and incarnations that control the Bollywood box office.

Movies like Deepa Mehta's Fire and Onir's My Brother Nikhil that have made stirring efforts to break the orthodox depiction, but have been labelled as 'parallel' cinema. However, the current wave of films, like Fashion and Dostana, may be able to bring the much awaited acceptance to homosexuality.

Mahesh Dattani made a bold effort "Mango Souffle" to look at the gay community without prejudice and to de-marginalize homosexuality in our cinema. But the efforts went in vain as the film hardly got an audience worth citing.

With the release of Karan Johar's Dostana where the Bollywood hunks and lead actors, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, pretend to be a couple in a bid to rent an apartment in Miami. Madhur Bhandarkar's recent release, Fashion, in one of its sub-plots, has Harsh Chayya and Samir Soni play a homosexual fashion designer-couple thus indicating of the acceptance of the odd among the audience.

For many years, homosexual were essentially comic characters meant to lampoon men who, in every day jargon, aren't "normal". Like in- Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan in Kal Ho Naa Ho where Shah Rukh and Saif's characters were mistaken to be gay by the latter's housekeeper; Anupam Kher subsequently played in Rahul Rawail's "Mast Kalander" and David Dhawan's "Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge" and not to forget Sanjeev Kumar playing an effeminate character in A. Bhim Singh's "Naya Din Nayee Raat".

Now in Madhur Bhandarkar's "Page 3? for the first time a gay character is looked at without chauvinism and comes closest in Indian cinema to portraying a gay character with some air of sensitivity.

The director Madhur Bhandarkar comments: "All the characters you see in 'Page 3' is based on people I know. In our films, gay characters are used as props and gimmicks. In my film, Rehaan plays an identifiable character. We cannot reduce any community of people to tokens and emblems. We've to treat them as real."

Homosexuality is still in the pothole of 'minorityism' and Hindi cinema has a long way off from pulling it out. The filmmakers can get honest about the matter on screen only when they gain courage to accept their own sexuality.

Hi Karan,

I have to confess that even if I usually lean towards watching art and independent films, 3 of the 6 Indian films I own were either directed by you or came from Dharma Productions. What to do. The contradictions of a film lover.

I recently watched Dostana, and... wait... I'll post here what I posted in Aamir Khan's blog about it. (Sorry, I'm more of a AK fan than a SRK one... the other 3 films I own are his)

Anyway, read on...

"Last night I watched "Dostana"... what a crazy, fun movie. First time watching Priyanka Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan and even Bobby Deol. Didn't know AB was such a good comedic actor.

But after the laughter faded, I walked home thinking about gay rights and the passage of Proposition 8 in California. Read about it here if curious: http://xrl.us/oxtaj

I don't know what your views are in terms of the right of gay couples to marry... and sorry if I offend anyone here, as it's not my intention. I just wanted to share the following video clip from an MSNBC political commentary program, which touched me deeply. Watch it here: http://xrl.us/oxtch

(WARNING: If you think you'll be offended, please just ignore this post. But if you want to see another point of view, don't miss it)"

Thanks Karan for bringing up this issue and confronting it, albeit in a light manner. Looking forward to "My Name is Khan" with my favorite actress/actor of all time, Kajol.

Hugs

uufffff...........u finally wrote something karan.

am so happy that dostana worked big time for you and everyone associated with the film.

and needless to say,i liked dostana too.the first half was absolutely hillariouss.my only complain was the second half could have been a lot more wittier than it is actually.the second half gets too serious and that seriousness does not suit the tone of the film.

anyway, congrats on the sucess of the film. *hug*

Hi Karan,

I just thought, I check to see whether you have blogged again during the last days and timing seems to be perfect.

Dostana didn't reach Switzerland yet, so I'm unable to say something concerning this movie, but what I would like to do is, to express that I really like the complexity of your movies and your talent to make it easy and feelable for the audience to follow the complete main and side legs of a story.
Yesterday I watched KAHN again and even being European, I understand that it needs courage to handle socially critical subjects.
Everyone here is already waiting for My name is Khan. So from here I wish you good luck and hopefully a lot of good koffee (which is not that easy to find in the states) for your new project.

hi

karan

i am happy that dostana is a success. i am open for creativity and experimentation. I am sure all the conservative minds might not like it. I want see a movie with my family and enjoy it. but lately all movies has more sexual contations which makes you uneassy to go with your family. libralisation doesn't mean through stuff on your face. producers and directors should be more careful about what people will like it.

Dear Karan,

your films are always everything at the same time; funny, romantic, deep and progressive. You've got a vision and then you make a film about it, thus treading new paths and extending the usual boundaries of Indian films.
That's what I like about you and your films. I'm always very curious what you will do next.
It's a pity that we in Europe have to wait some time till we can see Dostana. But it's ok. By the way, when will you start shooting "My name is Khan?" and will you also be shooting in the USA during Christmas time and New Year's eve?

Good luck with Dostana and all the other projects!

Sincerely,

On Dostana

It's great movie-not only did it make me laugh, I also love the underlying message "Dostana (friendship) has nothing to do with WHAT your friends are, it's about WHO they are inside"
Kunal and sam were not really gay, yet neha thought they were, and she loved them. Sam's mother thought they were gay, and accepted them despite her beliefs.

It's a fun loving movie all the way that normalizes the idea of being gay and having gay friends without being a long drawn out movie that only film festivals would have appreciated.

Regarding the critics, I think movies like "girlfriend" are offensive to homosexuals, it exoticizes homosexuality and makes it seem racy and shocking, whereas Dostana, takes the most normal characters that you would meet everyday, and poses the question, 'does it really matter what their sexual preference is?"

plus...i have to say...JOHN ABRAHAM....Wow!!!!!

I live in Canada..and the theatre was packed here, everyone was laughing, even the non indian crowd....we definitely weren't laughing AT homosexuals, we were laughing with them...

It has been really really long since the last time you wrote on this blog. I had almost lost hope of seeing another post from you before the shooting of My name is Khan commences. We are counting days till the first days shooting of MINK. Very excited. I have used this word far too many times already. I know that. But can't help it.

The screening of Dostana for the gay community can only be thought and done by you. It is a gesture that definitely deserves admiration. I do not think any other director/ producer would have done this, even if this thought might have come across their mind. I have always admired you, loved you, and now I respect you. I do not know you personally but it is almost like I know you very well. Sometimes I read all this rubbish in the media about some things related to you or things supposedly said by you. By reading the article I can say if its right or not. I seriously can. You are like family. I am not trying to make fun of you, but I find it very funny everytime you tell that somebody is like family to you. The whole film industry seems to be your family and seriously I think you are the only one who can make such a big family within the film industry.

I love srkajol. My luv for them may be a little less than your love for them and that is just because I don't know them personally. It is this simple fact that you luv them more or less the same like me that is making me luv you. You are only one who can bring SRKAJOL together. You are the only who knows how to portray them and you are the only director who knows them so well. There is soo much that I would like to discuss. Some of the scenes in k3g b/w srkajol can only be created by you and no body else. I can go on forever. Anywayz now back to dostana which is probably the topic you like to discuss the most right now. :)

Fantastic film. Amazing "chemistry" b/w John and Abhishek. Everybody is fantastic in the film. The friendship b/w John, Abhishek and Priyanka was wow... I wish I would get two friends like this. God... it wud b soo much fun. The songs are brilliant. Each and every song is by heart for me and my personal favorite is desi girl and maula maula. Good luck with the next production and also with Ayan's film. I hope all these films do better than Dostana and that the dreams your father had with dharma be fulfilled.

Wow talk about a long gap. Congratulations on dostana's success (btw I loved the film, though I feel like there was a bit misadvertising when you guys said in interviews that there weren't caricatures of gay characters because those who were actually really gay in the film were caricatures, ie Boman's character). But either way great film, really entertaining and hilarious. I hope you include the material on DVD during shooting that you felt may not have been suitable for family audiences. It would make an awesome special feature on the DVD. Also, please consider requiring tarun, abhishek, and john to do a commentary track on the DVD of the film. It would be a treat for the audience who loved the film to be able to hear what happened behind the scenes for each scene of the film.

by the way... i'd like to ask or suggest you something... have u watch the movie "A walk to remember" ? If u didnt, then, go and watch it... its really nice... (its a quite old movie) and i was thinking that it would be really great if we could have had an indian version of that movie... and, if there's a director who may create a greater impact on its audience that the original movie, its surely gonna be you! you know, its really the type of movie which i guess you like... the one which will make you dream, make you cry, make you want to be in the place of the characters and above all, make you want to watch the movie once again...

Hi Karan

This is my first comment on your blog. I appreciate the time you filmmakers are taking out to blog. It’s fun to know your views as opposed to media and critics.

Loved Dostana. And yes I also feel disappointed when people say that Dostana is insensitive to gay people. For me it is obvious that right from the first scene it is made clear that this is a comedy. And depending upon the stereotypes to create humor is, I think, very common in comedies. So what if gays happen to be the stereotypes in Dostana. Don’t we all laugh at Sardar Jokes or Gujrati Jokes or Sindhi Jokes or Parsi Jokes? Does that mean that we are insensitive all these communities? We all know that these communities are very hard working and they have created a standing for themselves through their hard work and determination.

On the other side, the sign that we can have a good natured laugh at gay jokes means that we have started to accept gays as part of our society. And the laugh is a sign of acceptance and not revulsion.

Anyway keep up the good work and please blog more.

Pritam Barhate.

Thanks so much for bringing your cast and crew to Miami. Make Washington DC next please! Close to Philly (Philadelphia) so take a short visit and see for yourself! Dostana was damn funny, I'm glad it was intended to be one. :o) -N

Hey, its almost time out. When are you finally coming out dude. We know you been gay all the while. You are more in touch with your feminine side. Your walk and talk evidently shows it too. You are slowly desensitizing the topic over the period. First Kal Ho Naa Ho and now Dostana. I guess the jokes will become more and more bolder in your coming films. We love you no matter what happens.

Well, the movie is funny alright! But please stop parading that this one succeeded in introducing the subject of homosexuality in the "right" manner! And for your information, I have always been supportive of your past works. But not on this one, you seriously gave a negative image about gays. The movie being funny is altogether another matter.

Anyways, all the best for your future projects.

Hi,
Good to see a post from your end after almost a month and a half. I am sure that you must be up to your ears hearing about Dostana but since you dedicated your recent post to it, allow me to give my two cents.

I saw Dostana few days ago, here in new york, all by myself. The solitary confinement in the theater was the result of my friends refusing to come along. They feel that they can't take bouts of hamming that your films often suffer from. I would say that I would a bit surprised with this film - it has your production company stamp all over it yet the story holds together. It is shot well and the location is instrumental in setting the required laid back tone, allowing the viewer to go with the flow.

My biggest grouse is that it is just so predictable and suffers from nostalgia of your earlier films like kuch kuch hota hai. I wish you'd stop indulging in your previous work now. I know that you didnt direct is but I would be closely watching your up coming works. It would be good to see something gritty, where you take a certain stance and not gloss over things.

I understand that you have diverse audience at stake in India and at the end of the day you have to please a certain section of the crowd but I also think that a company like yours, which has raked in moolah with almost all their films, can afford to experiment a bit and make some intelligent cinema. You come across as a very articulate person. I am hoping that it would be inculcated into your films.

On another note, have a good trip to philly and would be nice to organize a special screening of the fllm in nyc for film and photography students. There are around 100 - 150 fulbright students, who can organize one too.

I am also surprised that sections of Indian press reported that the film is slated to be banned in Pakistan where as it is up and running with plenty of shows in the theaters there.

Good luck!

Dear Karan,

I have not seen Dostana as yet; I am awaiting the DVD. I love funny movies and from everything I am reading, I know I will enjoy Dostana. It's not only in India, but in other parts of the world also there are many who do not accept gays. Many of us love to judge when we do not have the right to. For the ones who criticize this movie, please do not let it bother you because you cannot please all of the people all of the time.

I am eagerly awaiting MNIK because Shah Rukh and Kajol are my very best onscreen couple. All the best for this movie.

while I have watched all movies you have produced and made...i must confess that after every movie i watch of urs i am left feeling a little cheated..

if people like you and your good friend SRK make movies like dostana and Om shaanti Om...we will never feature anywhere on map of world cinema

I am sure you have collected lot of money...most people including me are taken in by all the advertising and sexy looking star cast…. hoping against hope that this time you wouldn’t disappoint us.

I would love to know who these repeat viewers are?!

You have the money, bandwidth and intelligence to make movie that seem believable...
That argument that you make movie for masses and you only want to entertain people and intelligent movies don’t make money....is negated by good movies like Guru, jab we meet or even dasvidaniya

Oh what relief to see you blog again! I must admit that I visited the blog few times a day sometimes to see if you'd written something, especially since Dostana released. I went to go watch Dostana and loved every little bit of it. I seriously cried right before the intermission not because of the movie but because I really wish I was part of the production myself. The movie turned out great and that definitely means that the production must've been really fun!
Every time I watch a good movie, all I wish for is to be on a movie set, so undoubtedly Dostana is one of the best movies made this year. Also, I don't think it has anything that will be offensive to the homosexual community and people who are creating a fuss about all this are just a bunch of frustrated individuals!

Bottom Line...the movie is great and the star cast couldn't have been better.
I'm looking forward to more films from Dharma and still hoping to bump into you in San Francisco.

Love,

Hi Karan,
I have an episode to share with you, and am sure you would be delighted to hear this.

You are correct, the response from the gay community is mixed but there is nothing to be jinxed about as overall the response has been “wonderful”. People have walked out of cinema halls with dostana… a feeling that has lingered for long, long after the movies end.
I know you would’ve read about this elsewhere, but I now take this opportunity to thank you personally.

DOSTANA HELPED ME COME OUT ABOUT ME BEING GAY TO MY 13 YEAR OLD SISTER.
I am pretty much out to everybody in my family, but not to my sister. She was too young to know, I thought. I have also seen her express disgust by saying “shee” when she watched Bobby Darling on TV. So I controlled my temptations to come out to her every time she made up some kiddy joke about some chick being my girlfriend.

I took her along with me to watch dostana, I saw the film at Big Cinemas Khar Ghar. Throughout the movie, I kept an eye on her reactions. Rather cautiously. She was giggling, singing, jumping all throughout. Kids grow faster these days, she understood every joke… and thoroughly enjoyed the movie. After the movie, I thought this is the time to come out to her . This is the time to tell her that She will not get any bhaabi, ever. All that she could get is a friend or jeeja (or whatever we define it), when I find a boyfriend. My heart was beating hard. When I was getting down the escalator with her, I held her hand and told her “I need to tell you something”. She looked at me and said “bolo”. Suddenly I spilled the beans “ummmm I am Gay”… there were people around… who obviously heard me but when I looked at them, they looked elsewhere. My sister smirked and chuckled “are you serious”. I replied “Yes”… she could make out from my looks that I was serious. And seriously gay.

She suddenly asked me a question that I had not even thought of “ Are you gay like Abhishek, or, are you gay like John” and then gave me a hearty hug. Tears trickled down my cheeks. People around who were a witness to this, now looked straight into my eyes with pride. One of the ladies in the crowd showed me a thumps up and said “you did it dude, you did it”

Dostana, didn’t make me gay, nothing could. But it definitely helped me be a happy gay, now im out to all! No more fake girlfriends. Fag hags could be what they are “Fag Hags”. Much that, now I miss the pretentious me , Lol.

I was happy to know that dostana had a gay angle. But frankly, before the release I had thought that this would be a butt of jokes on gays. But I was delighted when I watched the movie.

Thank you karan.
Do feel free to mail me if you need me to speak about the film being GAY-POSITIVE to any media.

I am available on people.n.nature@gmail.com and I blog at www.ThePregnantThought.co.cc

Needless to say, I would be really happy to receive a reply email from you.

Hello karan
How are u? I am very happy your successful film dostana and hope it will be a big big blockbuster inchalah .Actually i didn't see yet the film because you know here in morocco we have really a problem if we like to watch Indian films ; there is no cinema which broadcast your films so we have to wait the DVDs (but there is megarama in Casablanca which broadcast only the super hits of shah rukh khan fortunately) and as you are owner of a big house production plz try to do smthg .we are also fan of you 're cinema hena ??!!!!
Anyway I just want to thank u for 2 things:
1.As Muslim girl I want to thank u very much for taking the first step as a filmmaker to see to the whole word that all Muslims aren't terrorist in MY NAME IS KHAN .so god bless you
2. And thank you also for saving my life. Really I am serious plz don't be surprised
Actually ,i have seen KANK in 2006 and I think it's a sublime film with an awesome cast a very very good songs ...it was perfect and I still love it very very much but i didn't get your point very well but now in2008 I get it
Somebody has proposed to me and he's family and I was very confused my mind was divided yes and no
I was about to say yes to this proposition after a long time but when I saw KANK another time then I released what a big i was about to do i really understand the meaning of marriage , relationship ,family ect
maybe if i had accepted your film became my life so it's all because of u karan thank u very very much

Hi Sir

PLEASE READ THIS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE :)

My Name is Prema, I'm currently doing my 3rd year at University of Toronto. I'm part of a organization named the "SCSU- Charity Sub Committee". We organize events such as movie nights, dinners etc in order to raise awareness and contribute in our own way to help different charities around the world. There is a large amount of Indian undergraduates in our campus, and to raise money for a charitable organization we decided to show a BOLLYWOOD MOVIE. Unfortunately, since its a Hindi movie we would need the permission from the production house in order to play the movie. It seemed impossible to get a hold of anyone from India, but I thought since you are a blogger, this way would be easier for me to get a hold of someone from the film industry. So if can you let us show any of your movies it would great! Since we are planing to show the movie during valentines day :) anything with SRK and Kajol should bring lots of crowd. We would really really appreciate it if you can get back to us, or you can give us a number and we can call you. You can also call the university to find out more about our organization.

I hope, that the society will bring up tolerance to homosexuality in itself.
And I am sure, that films similar "Dostana" will help us to develop the tolerant attitude.
I develop programs of psychological support to homosexuals in Russia (Rostov - on-Don).
Unfortunately the Russian society is not so tolerant as, for example, European.
I cannot argue on a situation in India, but I can imagine it.
Frequently I meet mothers and fathers who sincerely wish "to cure" children. It is one situation.
Even more often I meet adult people which live in heterosexual marriage and have secret long homosexual relations. It is other situation.
And I do not meet people which openly show their homosexuality.
Well
The blog is not about it.
I still hope to see "Dostana" in Russia.

Have a nice weekend, Karan.
From Russia with sincerity

Hey...Dostana was hillarious, really enjoyed it. ABjr was really good, i love him in comedy, and John was looking his best. And Priyanka is gorgeous, most actresses in your movies always end up lookin great. But all the actors looks were nice and fresh.

Hey I recently saw an interview of u regarding MNIK, u said there is no suraj hua maddham in the movie. And its totaly differen tfrom ur previous work. Will the audience get to see any romance between SRK-Kajol? we have waited so long for them to come together, u must show romance between the two. Looking forward to the Ranbir-Konkana movie, both are talented!!

Good Luck with the trip to Phili and ur shot of MNIK. U must sometime soon shoot something in Toronto. Maybe a scene of MNIK:)

I guess I'm going to play a bit of the devil's advocate here. Please keep in mind that I adored the movie and it may even be one of my favourite movies ever!

However, I can see where the critics who believe it's offensive to homosexuality are coming from. Never is being gay shown to be a bad thing in the movie, and Kirron Kher's character coming to terms with her son's supposed homosexuality and his relationship with another man is a lovely moment. But the portrayal of the gay characters is . . . well, less than entirely progressive. M, the immigrations officer, and the soldier at the beginning are all limp-wristed, effeminate stereotypes. You could argue that Sam and Kunal show "normal", non-effeminate gays . . . but they aren't gay (though the ambiguous ending has convinced my fangirly mind otherwise <3 ), and when we see fictionalised versions of them that are (in Sam's Venice story), they're the most ridiculously over-the-top stereotypes one could imagine.

Again, like I said, I loved this movie to bits. And I thought overall, it had a really good message about homosexuality - that it's normal, that parents should accept their children, etc etc. But maybe your critics were more annoyed by the stereotypes rather than the overall message?

Finally, I know the movie only came out (ha, pun completely unintended :P) in theatres a week ago, but any idea when the DVD will be released? Because I am most definitely buying a copy and encouraging all my friends to do so - it was that good. <3

oh well, enjoy all the 'success' of 'dostana'. Nops I will not congratulate you on it 'cause it was surely below par! Not just it does ridicules gay community as caricatures but also characters of Sushmita Mukherjee and also Kirron Kher were terrible and sick. Surely it earned you tons of money but comedy was in bad taste. You've lowered your class to David Dhawan's slap stick comedy. Completely unexpected in context of KKHH and KKKG or for that matter KANK... though I should say all your movies show promise, they could have been really great cinema; I guess you need a director like Aamir or Farhan to bring CLASS... Partner and singh is king made tons of money and so did Taare Zameen Par, Don, Dil Chahta hai ... but guess which movies will be remembered for times to come??? your 'Dostana' doesn't figure in that list

Namaste Karan,

first of all, I must tell you, I haven't watched Dostana yet, but I'm sure it is very good, cool and funny and I will watch it the next time.

I'm very excited about MNIK, because it'll start shooting in 22 days.
But I'm really scared about the script which is written by Shibani Bhatija.
I don't think, although you do, she's good. The Screenplay of Fanaa which she'd also written wasn't the best and Kidnap was almost worst. Just the script of KANK was better, because you'd helped her.

Please have a look at the screenplay once more, before you start shooting.
Today I've watched U, Me Aur Hum and I think Kajol is the greatest and most beautiful actress. I love her playing very much.

Please keep writing!

Love,
Julia from Germany

I have not seen the film yet. Then again, I doubt its showing in New York anywhere right now. Besides, I've always been more of a DVD fan than a Cinema fan, unless its Hollywood (sorry, but the Indian cinemas in NY just don't stand up to cleanliness of the regular cinemas) - my main gripe with Hindi films.

On another note, I have heard from others that the film has a gay theme and in learning that itself makes me want to watch the film. I don't think the gay & lesbian community has been given its due (i.e. license to wed each other) and I'm a strong supporter for them. They deserve the same rights and privledges as straight men and women. I understand that most people have this stereotypical view of gays being overtly gay in the sense of acting as queens. However, that's a very select few in society.

Considering the senseless overpopulation crisis facing our planet, is it any wonder that God\ Universe has decided to replicate more and more homosexuals in our society? I truly believe that it is one of Nature's way of curbing the population explosion. 'You all want to be irresponsible and have lots of kids when you know that I, as a planet, am in danger and can't handle the burden?! Then fine. I'll make your children homosexual so that they CANNOT reproduce.'

That's how I see it anyway, so I see the thriving gay community as a blessing and not a taboo. I doubt that I'm the only straight person who feels this way. If you have a deep faith in God and believe that all that is done naturally is for the good, then you shouldn't question it but lovingly embrace it.

Sorry to draw out this comment to be so long, but I felt that I should properly explain my view before praising you for filming on such a topic.

I'm sure that the director must've handled the topic well and given a new understanding to those who are usually inclined to the current stereotypes.

Keep it up Karan! Keep it up Dharma Productions! Promote love in all its aspects, not just the conventional man-woman frolicking in the fields crap.

My GOD KARAAAAAAAAN !!!!

I am crazy about your film DOSTANA!! It is by FAR the most hilarious, lovable, fantastic, just purest genius of a film I have ever seen.

I LOVED IT and you made my life more happy by it. I must thank you in person. but for now I found my way back onto your blog to just say KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. When and where can I buy the film and its music????? I couldn't locate a place for that!!

Maa da laadla is TOOOOOO COOL. I laughed the theater down nonstop. You are a true antidepressant :-).

Love you man!!!

*sigh* Hi Karan. I could have sworn I had commented on this blog when it was first posted, but my comment never showed up. So, now I doubt that you will get a chance to read this comment, but I will write it nonetheless.

I saw Dostana and it was a wonderful movie. Quite a bit of fun. I think there was the perfect balance between serious and light, allowing it to leave an impression on the viewer while not getting too bogged down in social issues. That's the perfect way to get the message across, with maybe even some of the audience not even realizing that there is a lesson being learned!

That being said, did the end of the movie imply a possible relationship in the future with Sam & Kunal? Because that would make me very very happy! :)

Thank you for making such a "commercially progressive" film, something you seem to be becoming an expert in, and I hope you do more of the like.

Have fun in Philly!

Love,

Anita

P.S. Remember to keep us patient bloggers happy and post as often as you can!!

Karan movie Dostana was excellent...saw it over the weekend. But the song maa daa laadla in the end should have been in the middle instead of giving it to Kiron Kher. It looked too much on her. By the time movie ends, people are ready to leave and not that many people got an opportunity to enjoy the song.

I'm sure lots of people will agree with me on this one
thanks

DOSTANA WAS AMAZING!!!
I don't think I've ever laughed so much during a movie!
I've never gone to see a movie twice but I think I might make an exception for this one. Priyanka looked PERFECT in every shot, the golden bathing suit was HOT.

As for the film being offesive to gay people, I didn't find it offensive at all! (Although even if it was I would have been too entranced by Priyanka <3 to notice)
(My only hope is for some lesbian characters now!)

FANTASTIC FILM!

Hi karan

Watched 'DOSTANA ' yesterday . Good Paisa Vasool movie but I expect some Great movies to be remembered for long rather than popcorn masala movies ' jisco dekha thoda bahut mazaa kiya phir bhool gaye' from Dharma production.

Why don't you try to make like KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KAL HO NAA HOm again that are still fresh in mind.

Hi Karan,

I watched Dostana a couple of days ago with family and we just loved it. I loved the movie, the songs, the acting, the general feel of the movie...there is a distinct 'feel good' factor about the movie and a very likeable quality to it. In today's stressful time , the movie was very therapeutic.

Thanks so much for giving us such a wonderful movie. Irrespective of what the so called pundits and critics say, please continue making 'your brand of movies'.

Love you . Take care.. Avinash

Hi Karan,

Have always really loved your movies right upto KANK. The emotional layers that you give your movies is unparalled and unmatched.

But still i am conciously not going to watch Dostana. And the reason for that being very obvious ... the gay theme. Before you think any further let me add that ive been dealing with homosexuality up close since the last many years as somebody very very close to me in my family is gay, my brother.

Yes you have a choice to live the life that you want and make the movies that you want. But dont you think that this is not what God intended life to be. If indeed being gay was fine then why cannot two men have babies. To have children thru surrogacy arent humans trying to play God. Let us atleast leave some things for God to decide. Why can't gay men come up with steady relationships and marriage to show that it is truly love. Isnt having flings day in and day out nothing but living a life of animals mating randomly.

Again before you get angry, i still love my brother a lot. Have never abandoned him or forced him to do anything. We all in the family love him and he is free to live his life the way he wants to and we would support him thru all phases of his life. But it is very sad for me to see him alone. By his own admission he says that he's never seen a long term committed gay relationship amongst the gays that he knows and that he is mentally prepared for not being able to find one himself. Friends will be there but what about when you are alone when youre not young anymore.

It is all good to have some gay fun on screen but it is not all fun being gay in life and it is families that go thru it who know the reality of it. And it seems like a lifetime of pain and sadness.

Please do rethink about the path that your cinema is taking.

Happiness Always,
Ashish

Hey Karan....
I watched dostana and simply luvd the film. As I had expected the movie was really a complete entertainer. Abhishek's acting especially in the part when he is narrating his luv story was the best!!! I don't think i hav laughd so much in any ther film. John and Priyanka lukd fab and they also acted superbly. Every actor lukd perfect in their roles whether it ws boman, sushmita mukherjee or bobby deol. And above all.. KIRRON KHER.. I simply luvvvvvvdddddd her in the song "maa da ladla".... Infact I was feelin that she should have been in the whole film.. The music ws rockin 2...
My 2 personal favourite scenes frm the movie wer when both john n abhi sort of propose 2 priyanka. Especially john with the k2h2 part ws extremelt romantic and i cud feel that this can b in a karan johar film only. Also wen in the last john n abhi bend down and ask bobby deol to marry their best friend.
now jst one negative point about the film - I felt that the movie got a bit slow in the second half bt again pickd up.... Overall simply luvd their DOSTANA.
And karan whats up with my name is khan? when r u guyz starting with the shooting???

Hello Karan,
I watch Dostana and I will say one, it was super film, I did't to laugh heartily long ago how on this film (we with impatience wait on this film in Poland), but KANK will be my favourite always. I adore your films, wait on more far, fantastic productions, first of all My name is Khan :)
I attach to question my friend mionka of steam fasts higher "and have and question about the trip you're having:
wasn't this saif - kareena - vivek movie primarily supposed this include some scenes made in the warsaw subway?"

Hey Karan!

Enjoyed Dostana! [Though I felt that the 'acceptance' message should have been more prominent...]

This was a joke somebody cracked, but after Kal Ho Na Ho (and that new AirTel ad), Shah Rukh and Saif could also have been cast in the movie. I am sure that Dostana is an extension of the gay concept in Kal Ho Na Ho...Did you ever consider them for the movie?

And yeah, I agree that you should talk more about SRK and your upcoming movies with him. Ditto for your upcoming Animation movies.

And please make sure that your animation movies are top-notch, unlike all the other Indian animation movies (With the exception of Roadside Romeo).

I've already said too much,
Thanks!
Govind.

Hi Karan,

I was so glad to read your blogg finally...and yes it had been too long.

Let me first of all congratulate you and your team on the sucess of Dostana...I have encouraged everyone that I know to go and see and we live in Canada. The theatres over here dont usually get crowded unless you or Yash Uncle are releaseing their movies and let me tell you that the buss outside the theatre was just thrilling on the day Dostana was released. The main thing was that people were not only talking about he cast...but alot of people were also talking about you and your productions house.

I just got a little emotionally standing in cue waiting for the doors to open while I heard people talk so hihly of you and your production house...silly me.

The movie was exclleent , the comic timing from everyone was excellent too. however, yes there is always a however, the script was anything new...the movie had a bit of this and bit of that inspired from other move. However, the plus point was the the way the movie was made,,,,the style, the back drop...definately gearing towards the younger crowd and there in nothing wrong with that. I understand when two years ago you made kank and it wasnèt for everyone and people debated it to death. With Dostana you played it safe and you did the job really well.

I understand that Dharma Productions needs to grow and make different types ofr movies as well...but I am fearing that it might become another Yash Raj company whre it will release 5 or 6 movies a year and only one or two might succeed.

Dont get me wrong...I;am a fan of your work and I could easily tell 10 or 15 mintes into Dostanathat you hadnèt made it..this was Taruns work and it showed.

For MY NAME IS KHAN...Im looking forward to an excellent script, an excllent direction and bueatifull shot songs and not for getting your witt in the way you tell your story on celloid.

P.s i loved your little note at the begining of the movie to your Mum who is the final reality check...listen to her...she will never steer you wrong.

All the best in the U.s.....talk to you soon.

Tony

Hi Karan,
I've always admired your skills as a film maker but honestly was quite disappointed at Dostana. With most film makers resorting to picking up story ideas from Hollywood flicks, the audience always counts on peope like you to stay original in the true sense.
Why you felt the need to pick up parts from movies like The Devil Wears Prada...13 going on 30..etc is beyond logic.
I do hope your forthcoming movies will see your originality back.
All the best...............
Cheers!

Hi, Karan

You are the only producer/writer/director in this whole industry who has the guts to make bold movies such as Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and now Dostana. Critics and the public in general are not used to such moves as they very conservative and the concept of being Gay is very difficult for them to digest. But i bet you this will open a lot of doors for people who are not able to express them selves easily.

You are a very good film make and please stay the way you are.

Thanks
Best Regards

Hey Karan

Was wondering if this is your way to connect with the people or just advetise your ( so called) movie..Dostana!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways your movies are good but for god's sake open up!!! There are lot more actors in India you can make films with.

Actually you are better as a TV host but even there you don't really seem to interview actors other than your friends!!!!

Hmmmmmm...........i am starting to doubt your very insecure with other big actors.. say Salman or Aamir for example..........are you???

I haven't seen 'Dostana" yet - but it sounds GREAT and thank you for making such a wonderful film like it. I don't know what else to say. It's good that you're using your powers to influence people wisely - this introduction of such an issue into the Indian community is greatly overdue and it's cool to see that you can portray it in such a positive way. Keep it up

hey karan...

watched dostana recently...dude must say big time dissapointed ...not with the actors or the story line ..but at your whole attempt to bank on the gay thing as your USP... dude u at any point of the film meking or watever u did for the movie forget dat your story is no where dealing with real gay ppl , their lives or their rts... it was bullshit 2 claim dat u r saking ppl 2 look diffrently 2wards this community wen yor characters r jus pretending 2 be one!!!! ... i mean wat were u thinking man?
dude i ve been doing a lot of research on gay rts n civil liberties for my legal course n trust me i knw 101 ways 2 help these ppl if u really wish 2 help them...n jus using this sensitive issue as an USP is not one of them...!

n i dont really knw who u arranged da spcl screening for n got da green signal...!...i mite sound rude bt being a huge fan of yors i request u if really u want da country to accept gays/lesbians/bisexuals.transgenders into the mainstream through yor movies...make sum meaningful ones after studying wat exactly the problems these ppl face n how can they b solved...n use your brillant star frends 2 star in that movie...it will have a profound impact on the society!!!

once more wud like 2 mention the movie was good and well made but dont use an issue to bank on wen actually u dodnt deal with it in the movie.

Dear Mr. Karan,
I am sure you know it by heart that Dostana will not remain like your former lovely movies. It was just like a fleeting moment in life... just to have fun for an hour or a day... not for the rest of your life.
However it was funny and I saw a shadow of your eternal lovely magic slogans in that: Love and Friendship... and this magic made me sit and watch it till the end.
I can't imagine what will happen in your most-awaited "My name is Khan". It is gonna make anyone who is just a little familiar with your works crazy! Wish you success and PLEASE make it with your bright heart and soul.
God bless you

Dear Karan
I am with all my thoughts now in Mumbai, it was so shocking to hear about all the crucial attacks. I was litterally speechless, when I heard, that the Taj Hotel is under hostage. I really hope that all will come to an end and in my thoughts, I am with all the familiies who lost someone in the last few days.
I visited India 1 year ago, but I was in Delhi, Mumbai was always a city, which I really want to visit. Some friends of mine are telling me now "No don't go to Mumbai, it is not safe"
I think, that this is a very stupid response, because nowadays where in the world to you find a place which is safe?

Anyway, unfortunately here in Switzerland they don't show so many Hindi movies (but there are many Bollywood fans around here, I tell you), so I will wait to see Dostana until it releases also here in Switzerland. But I am still listening to the marvoulos soundtrack, I just love it.
A movie which I have seen is Yuvvraaj and the music is wonderful too, what do you think of Rahmans Soundtrack?

I would be really delighted if you decide once, that you want to shoot a movie in Switzerland, that would be really nice, because you have no idea how many fans of Indian cinemas here are.

many regards and all the best

Hi Karan
I just watched Dostana last night and I have to say it was great. There were so many times throughout the entire movie that I burst out laughing and almost couldnt watch just because I couldn't believe that Abraham and Bachan actually did and said the things they said. The kiss in the end was just too good. Lol. I just finished up with exams and it was a great way to relieve all the stress of the past couple of months. You are amazing in how you are able to draw out sincere acting in people. It was nice to see Chopra like that. Great job!!!
My prayers and wishes for those who have lost loved ones in Mumbai. May justice be served on those cowards.

Dear Karan,
I have been wanting to get in touch with you ever since I heard that you are making a film on Asperger Syndrome... My name is Khan..
The reason I wanted to get in touch was that I am a mother of Two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD),one of them who is now 13 years old is a boy with Asperger... my elder son who would have been 23 this year ,was on the severe side of the Spectrum, had passed away in 2003, due to a condition called CARDIOMYOPATHY... we just could not save him.
NOW...as I am facing day in and day out, the SOCIAL- DEFICIT related difficulties for my other son.... it is heart wrenching as the society does not seem to co-operate....To top it all THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT has not included AUTISM as a disability in the PWD ACT of 1995..... we as parents have been fighting over this issue for over a decade now... I am from BANGALORE... we have formed an organisation called called AUTISM SOciety of India in 2006 an d have been working towards sorting the NATIONAL level issues related to AUTISM.

Now since you have taken quite a challanging task in your hands,I on behalf on other parents of ASD individuals reques you to do the proper research and bring the ISSUE in such away that it grabs the hears of all in the WORLD as TAARE ZAMIN PAR has done for Dyslexia... Please dont just touch the issue like Mr. SUBHASH GHAI has done in YUVRAJ.... the portrayel is just PATHETIC, an extremely silly film... disappointment by MR.Ghai,,,, sorry to mention but this is the truth.

To study this topic more in deapth, we as parents can help you free of charge... but we WANT you, Mr. Shahrukh Khan and Kajol to become AMBASSADOR for AUTISM....

Please help us to get our children their RIGHTS of A CITIZEN.

I look forward to hear from you.

Wish you a Great Success.
