Thursday, June 19, 2008 12:47:19 PM (India Standard Time, UTC+05:30)

I sat for days thinking of what I should write. Frivolous and intelligent thoughts kept oscillating in my “gemini” head. I read many blogs written by prolific and evolved personalities. And so, after suffering a persecution complex and a feeling of insecurity, I decided to be myself, which most of us in the film fraternity very rarely do.

Over the years I’ve surfed the net to read about how people perceive me. What they think of me as a filmmaker, a chat show host, or just as a human being. Initially what I read might have driven me to the closest therapist, and Prozac might’ve been my soul mate. But a good mother can always bring you back on track. I read bloggers attack my “bubble gum cinema”. I strolled into chat rooms discussing my sexuality. I read about my alleged link ups with leading mainstream actors. So should I have felt like a controversial celebrity? Or just plain and simple, sad? The latter has so much more drama. But fortunately, I settled for old-fashioned indifference.

It’s important to be honest. Yes, it’s important, but certainly not possible. So most of us in the film fraternity (notice how I use that word a lot?) have mastered the art of “dishonest honesty.” What is that? It’s the art of concealing the truth and yet coming across frank and forthright. It’s a gift we all have. But just like classical singing, it takes many years till you hit the high notes. My endeavor on this platform is to be a little less “dishonest honest”. I’m going to try. I promise.

So let me start by saying, I am star struck, and have always been. I love, adore, and am obsessed by film stars. I like to befriend them, I enjoy meeting them, I love having them in my inbox, and more importantly, I’m constantly trying to add to my collection. There, I said it. For many years, I had a desire to be popular. It’s like I wanted to win every congeniality contest in the world. It made me artificial. I didn’t quite like that about myself but I also didn’t know how to get out of that zone. I used to gush about women in terrifying clothes. Appreciate god awful celluloid performances. Hug and kiss people I wanted to send to jail and even applaud films that should never have been released. I had become the Godzilla of fake.

I lost my father. June 26th, 2004.

My perspective on life and relationships changed overnight. Death has a tendency of bringing you back to life. My new headspace at that point of time led to me making my infidelity saga, “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”. There was good news and bad news at that end. The good news was a bolder, newer, directorial, ME. The bad news was the old hangover that still made its way into the film; opulence, star image maintenance, and item song were some of the features of the film that I don’t really place on my pride mantle. Honestly, I don’t really have a film I want to scream and shout about. But then again, I never claimed to be a path-breaking cinematic genius. I was always an eager cinegoer who turned into an eager to please filmmaker.

Today I want intellectual acceptance. I want critical acclaim. I want blog praise, and I want festival applause. Don’t get me wrong, I still want the box office. Am I asking for too much? Of course I am. But I believe the universe, apparently, can be asked for the impossible. It’s no secret. I’m doing just that, everyday.

So, welcome to my bloggers park. I hope you find yourself a bench.

Love and koffee,

Karan.

p.s. my film is finally titled, “My Name is Khan” (alvida, “K’) and it stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This is my first official announcement.

Hi Karan,

I have admired your work for a while now and especially loved sipping coffee with you and your guests as all the gossip poured out! I heard about your blog, and came here to looking for an extension of all the film fraternity (!) inside scoop. But I found something better. Your blog is a revelation. It seems like you really went with your instincts and digged deeper in your conscious to write it. Thats a rare thing to find when it comes to blogs. Well, I am hooked and can't wait to read more from you!

Also, I loved the part where you confessed your "star struck" obsession. I live in the US, originally from Bombay, and whenever I talk with my non-Indian friends here, I tell them "Indians are very simple when it comes to things they like. The order goes: Bollywood, Bollywood, Cricket, Bollywood!" I am confess I still have the Bombay-ite in me and follow the same order of favorites. But its great to know I am in good company =)

Good luck with everything! Looking forward to "My Name is Khan".

Hi Karan,

I have to say, reading your first Blog entry cracked me up. Exactly what I expected. Funny, witty, self-deprecating and honest (at least I hope it is).

So let me start by being honest, too. Of all your films I like KANK (what a horrible shortcut) the most because I think it is the most mature one. Sure it has some weaknesses (and the ones I mean are not among those you mentioned) but name one movie that has none.

It is very interesting to see that the death of a parent makes you think a lot about your own life and the connections you have with the other members of your family and with your friends. And for sure it makes you think about life in general and your approach toward it. This happend to me when my mom died almost 5 years ago. And it gets not easier with time... I still miss talking to her a lot.... That much for honesty...

Me and "Bollywood" that is a story for another day...

So here I am on my bench waiting for your next entry ;-)

Oh.... and please don't be scared away by all those weirdos. They will disapear sooner or later.

Hello, Mr. Johar!

As someone so rightly said, welcome in internet hell. I hope those silly guys will soon stop this nonsense and not spoil such a nice blog.

I admire your honesty, it takes guts to show so much of it in such a position as yours. I liked your earlier movies, and I am very much looking forward to your next film. Thanks a lot for finally confirming SRK and Kajol as main leads!

Good luck with your blog and your film!

Hey, good to c u here. It's very hard for me to say this as I don't like SRK at all so sutomatically I don't like u'r movies but I have to say abt u'r one scene in k3g when hritik meets srk in london and the way he cries or tries to hide his tears is one of the best scenes. it's up thrr with rajesh khanna's death in anand or anupam kher stage performance in daddy. I think u shud cast anupam khar and don't tell me waiting for a suitable role as that man can do anything. Regarding new movie my name is khan.... all the best. plss make story driven movie like u have done until now, don't make it like farah khan who i think is worst director ever. Just think for a while without srk wht would have been mmai hon naa and om shanti om... shess all crap. try A.R rehman for u'r films music as kank music was very similar to khnh especially the title song. 1 suggestion as a web developer i am saying provide a report abuse button so that u can remove the stupid and vulgur comments posted above.

I like how your blog reads more "real", unlike the bigB blog. I dont expect a busy actor to write 2-3 page long stories every single day. What a pity, he is respected a lot but for whatever reason his blog seems unreal.

looking forward to another entry. Just one suggestion - keep it real (and focused on YOU, atleast for now)

Hi Karan. It's so great that you've started blogging.
I'm from Germany and took notice on Hindi films only about three years ago. I saw the movie Kal Ho Naa Ho on German television and that got me hooked.
I've seen many movies since then, but your plus Farah Khan's are still my all time favorites. They made me a SRK fan as well.

You simply rock, Karan. Stay the way you are because you are just a wonderful person. :)

hello Mr. Johar. You blog is refreshening from the rest.i would like to give you an honest opinion of your films :
I really liked KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI.It was sweet and one of kajol's best performances. the last scene as she walks down the stairs to the mandap is really really touching.still makes me cry everytime i see it.

but after that i felt K3G was quite dissapointing.too loong and tedous!! i mean,There is a scene where SRK is asking for forgiveness from amitabhji for marrying against his wishes!!it takes him 50 SECONDs to just walk across the room!!!)totally not needed!!!but kajol and hrithik were good in the movie so it was entertaining, atleast the first half.

KANK was really ,really bad.The movie never tried to explore into the first marriages at all!!!all we come to know is that there is no LOVE.But there is much more to marriages than just the feeling of love.Marriages don't fall apart bcoz of not having similar interests.also, SRK's character was badly developed. I mean which guy sits at home after an injury, complaining about his wife being better than him!!Fine he has a limp but he can still find work rather than trailing rani mukherjee everywhere. to tell the truth, the film seemed to mock my sensibilities as an audience. the film had NO proper story whatsoever and was in NO WAY a mature film, let alone a different film.

i hope your new film "My name is khan" has a strong script which will focus on the main idea of the film before the clothes of it's characters!!
Anyways, hope you consider my suggestions and come out with a brilliant film.:)

First of all, I am so happy to finally hear that Kajol will be starring in My Name is Khan! We definitely missed the SRKajol jodi on screen! Thank you so much for making this possible!

Next, I can't believe my eyes... what is it with all these people here saying such stupid insulting stuff! Some people, yaar, I'm telling you it's a real blessing that people like you and Shahrukh exist on this planet so we know the world is not full of idiots like those who say such stupid things about you :D

Your true fans really appreciate you and wish you all the best! Really nice you started your own blog :) Thank you so much for sharing with your fans!

Dear Karan,

It was a sensitive effort and your characters expressed thoughts and ideas which women admit to only in private. Hope the honesty remains in "My Name Is Khan". All the best.

Dear Mr Karan,

I'm from Poland and I'm a big fan of your films. I particularly love Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Watching your movies I laugh and cry from happiness or sadness. They give me so much - for 3 hours I can forget about harsh reality and step into some amazing, colourful world.
I'm also very grateful for your new project and that you managed not only to reunite Kajol-Shahrukh couple on screen but especially for prompting Kajol to starr in it. For me, she's the best Kajol ever and I've missed watchinf films with her. Thak you so much!!!

Good luck and don't forget about Polish people who love bollywood very much (and day by day it's more and more of us).

Karan,

You are a gifted human being. Not only are you brilliant with your work, you come off as such an exciting personality. Your friendship with Shahrukh Khan shows how great it would be to have a friend like you. Yes Kank was bold, but it is the scariest film i've seen. It was made beautifully. Please dont consider what people say and make films for yourself. Your films are what, even the people who talk bad about, people cherish and watch over and over again. We hope to see the ever romantic pair of SRK and Kajol again on the silver screen. I understand your film has a social message but its a Karan Johar film. We want ROMANCE too! All the best. God Bless you..

I am fond of saying on blogs, paraphrasing Emerson on Plato, that ‘Karan Johar’ in Indian cinema is the horizon beyond which we do not yet see. To praise a signature called ‘Karan Johar’ is a bit like showing a torch to the sun. But to adequately engage with the effects of this signature is a far more difficult task and one to which the right critical attention has not yet been devoted in India. We still operate within the frame of an event called ‘Karan Johar’ but we are wholly oblivious to the full force of this legacy. I find it a bit regrettable that Karan Johar himself is not fully versed in the enormous histories he has helped unleash or is not very aware of his unique gifts as a producer-director or his unique achievements. But it is upto us, the ‘audiences’ or the ‘readers’ of this great ‘Johar text’ to become worthy of deciphering it. The Johar corpus is a gift to Indian cinema. Beyond this it is a gift to those like myself who have always cherished the name 'Johar' and considered it sacred in so many ways. This is not unthinking adulation. It is to be always guided by signposts like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and K3G and Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna so many other works that have constantly informed, enriched and entertained.

I have still not ‘addressed’ Karan Johar here. How does one address a God?! How does one go outside an ‘event’ to think it?

I am however pleased that ‘we’ are being ‘addressed’ through this blog.

Hey Karan,

Glad about your honest blog. I had a small request. You should put up one of your childhood pictures where u were 'Fat'.

There isn't anything to be embarrassed about, because you overcame it and now stand tall and smart in well fitted designer clothes and a nice personality.

Being able to laugh at yourself is the biggest quality one can have.

Waiting for your photo.

Dear Karan,
Welcome to the world of blogging. Us Bangladeshi's found out you were blogging from MTV India and its naughty ticker. I kept glued most of the day to see when the site came online. And now that it is, I am glad you decided to write. I am an admirer of your work and enjoyed your films like most of those who will visit this blog site. But two scenes predict what potential the real Karan has and they are, from KKKG (where SRK see kajol crying over the passing of her father and SRK's slowmo walk to her and then the hand on the head) and the SRK two girl road crossing scene in KANK. Pursue those instincts and you will find new audience I suspect. I am no authority on movies but I love them and as a viewer something tells me that that is the kind of director you will be........in the future....

Apologies for digressing. This is merely an ice breaking response.......
Just wanted to wish you the best with blogging. Will be a fervent follower of your thoughts here and will keep in touch often. Hope you will participate also.

BTW, of the few Bollywood personalities I know, one happens to be AR Rahman, who I think is a genius.....I never get an answer from him (just a smile for asking is the response I have) for this question and I have asked him quite a few times, how come you haven't worked together yet?

Will write more soon. You must add more features to the site. Like MOBLOG as in the BIg B site where you can post short messages from a mobile phone and Oh oh, umm.....also have a blog roll which lists sites you visit and blogs you read.......also a fan zone where you can have your fan's blogs featured and keep changing that month to month.....it will increase traffic and well, its free............

Happy Blogging......
and God Bless......
Matt

PS: Finally after like months of waiting.....MY NAME IS KHAN is the title after all. When did you decide? The truth only?

anyways I will repeat myself :D

I would like a bench with an umbrella and a nice view. Please bring on the goss :D, you will get all the blog praise u want! Why didnt u mention anything about Wake Up Sid :D Please please please, even 4-5 words will do :) Please change the color/theme of this blog, its very boring (yes, I m superficial). and please dont make a film to get critical acclaim and not something you would like to see as a viewer.

PS: Is that really satyam :o a little hard to believe haha and someone please censor the tasteless comments from mr.wannabe srk above
Friday, June 20, 2008 2:18:53 AM (India Standard Time, UTC+05:30)
Ignore the naysayers on the site and please for God's sake, accept constructive criticism but get a moderator to filter through the inane and really indecent comments that are sent by some really offensive and sad people who's claim to fame happen to be writing on the blog site (which they voluntarily visit) of someone whom they are ignorant about yet abusive off. Fish off- disrespectful little brats! Get a life that consists of something worth doing rather than writing shit on the site of a person who has achieved more than what your entire worth is..........

Friday, June 20, 2008 2:39:53 AM (India Standard Time, UTC+05:30)
Dear Karan,

first I want to say that I love your films. All of them. Sometimes it really has to be "bubble gum cinema" which includes opulence, star image maintenance and of course item songs. Despite this "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" was a very good film, the main temper was different to other films. When I saw the film first, I wanted to switch of my television, because I have never seen Shah Rukh like this before. All this sarcasm was almost unbearably. But I finished the film - thank god I did it! And you touched my heart again.
I think it is very difficult to find a way to make films like you want them to do and also want them to be successful - but it is not impossible. Perhaps the audience still needs some time to get used to this thought, but I am sure they will.

Please do not think about what other people think of you! It really is not necessary. It will only detract you from achieving your most wanted goals. Keep all your power for doing what you want, and stop kissing the people you do not really want to kiss.

Take Care,
(and ignore these stupid ones, they are only jealous - believe me)
All the best from Germany

Hi Karan,

Welcome to blog phere. This is Tanoy from Singapore.
But I am not the fan of your genre. Basically all those candy floss of yours is never attracted to me. Please don't mind but i feel you are too much sensitive type of director. I can give you one statistics. I did not see a single amount
Of action scenario in your movie except one while Mr Bachchan slapped Hrithik on
K3G.
But you look like a nice guy. But Don’t you feel you are too much emotional?

See I am completely from the other spectrum. My domain is IT& Telecommunication.

Football, Cricket , Human Rights are my next love. So please don’t mind from

A film illiterate guy’s suggestion.

I my self is a die heart Ram Gopal Varma fan. Besides I like Maniratnam, Rakesh Mehera and Priyan Darshan,

But honestly speaking there is no versatility on your movie. Same music, Love, Friendship etc. Are you not feeling tierd?

I think Dude you are scared to take any challenge and you can’t come out of this paranoid.

Be Brave Karan. You know why I like RGV . He can make AAG. He can get

Criticises from even low class moron like Sajid Khan But he does not care.,

He can bounce back with Sarkar Raj.

Please don’t think I am advertising Ramu. Because Media has given an idea that

You hate RGV.
But buddy Try to do some thing different.

I am sure you can do it.

Regards
Tanoy Dutta

OMG Karan! I am completely speechless! Thank you so so so much for bringing SRK-Kajol back in a film together, I still can't quite believe it's true!

You are my most favourite filmmaker and I'm honestly not saying this to suck up, but since KKHH became my obsession as a 6 year olds that is the truth!

Ignore the losers who obviously can't seem to ignore you and keep rocking like you do!

Best of luck with all your future projects, including Dostana which I am eagerly awaiting as well, and ofcourse MNIK.

Hiii Karan!!!! Im like youre BIGGEST fan...Im so happy you're finally getting net-savvy :D So great to see you write a blog!!!!!!

And stop being so hard on yourself dude..your films rock, each one of them!!!

About KANK...you got it right... you tried something different (and IMO succeeded, I loved it, it's easily one of my fav films of all time) but the way you packaged it was very "K3G"....and though I had no problem with that...I can see why certain people had issues seeing a sensitive issue being treated as grandly as othr stuff or whatever...

In the making of KANK, Abhishek said that "the best thing about the film is that even though Karan's chosen a subject whcih people usually make as a small project, he's not given up his grand scale etc"..... I guess some people appreciated that, others couldn't digest it

Whatever people think... one thing is for sure...Your films rock, you rock... believe in yourself, always...you're the best!!

Oh and I cant say how strange it feels to know for sure that SRKajol are back...but I knew only you could do it Karan...actually I knew the minute I heard you've started to blog that you've got SRKajol, I dont know why, but my heart told me right then that it is confirmed..I was right :D yay!

Lotsa Luv...God bless you!

and OMG some people here are such low-lifes,cant believe what they are saying..ignore them Karan... they talk so rudely about you (proving nothing but their immaturity and immoral behaviour) but at the end of the day, they'll be first in line to watch your films and also any other projects you involve yourself in...

Hi Karan,

Welcome to the blogging world. Your 1st entry is excellent. I think u r more honest than u give urself credit for.

Gotto say I have loved ur films. Ok, KANK not as much as the others, but that's my issue.

I am eagerly looking forward to My Name Is Khan (and am personally glad to see u say Alvida to the K....Believe me, ur films are good because of ur hard work, not the K). And I think this was a brilliant way to announce the lead pair to the world.

Keep writing (and drinking koffee)
Falak

p.s. Also keep up with the old-fashioned indifference to some of the arsy comments here by some people. They are the minority anyway. U win!! :D

Hi KJo, I have always admired your friendship with 'Shah' - as you fondly call him - I believe its the loyalty and steadfastness that attracts me more towards an individual. Hence, can you say I was eagerly waiting to post a blog on your website. I tried so many times just a few hours ago and I kept on getting prompts for login. And I sat there wondering -- OMG! Did I miss something here? How am I supposed to have a login, when your blog isnt published?
Anyways - I stay in Atlanta -- where none of your films are going to be shot, unfortunately. But, I loved you on your own show -- the best part of the show was there was nothing ostentatious about the guests you invited on your show. They were completely at ease and I guess the rapport you share with them helped them be at their own self.
I hope you do not have a word limit on your blogs (as AK's blog) and I wish you all the best. BTW, you were wonderful on the Paanchvi Pass show. You will see a lot of my blogs on your site soon ...Ciao` Take care and Dont forget to smile. :-) We love you for your down-to-earth personality.

Oh Karan, I'm starstruck too so *hi5* :P

but you know..Ive noticed...many times it comes across like you want to please people more than please yourself..sometimes I feel you do things to make others happy, rather than make yourself happy...I knwo this is a weird and random, and probably unwanted, comment..dont hate me for it..but I want to tell you..please always be yourself... be it for the films you want to make or your views on anything else... dont feel the need to please people.....the majority loves you the way you are and will always be here supporting you!!!!!!!

Dear Karan.

I'm so happy happy happy! And also so proud!! I don't even know you personally, but I kind of feel I do. Cause you share the same birthday with my best friend and your a gemini just as I am. And we also love to talk fashion, glamour, stars and movies!!! I applaud you for being so honest and open. My tip for you as a new blogger, please ignore the negativity and be open to praise and (honest) critics. Yes until now your movies have been candy sweet! But I loved every single bit of it. You have no idea how much joy you gave to so many people out there. As a true Kajol fan it was always a delight to watch your movies. You gave us the song of all Bollywood songs, Suraj Hua Maddham. You gave us gorgeous clothes, fabulous artists and you reinvented THE SRKajol jodi with your films. And now you have made so many people happy by bringing them back. Keep believing in yourself. Keep on working hard. And keep on being the fabulous fashionista that you are. Also loved your French on SRK's show. Am looking forward to reading much more blogs in the future. And tell Kajol her fans love her! And that we're dying to see her back (with SRK). Can't thank you enough Karan! Love and hugs from Amsterdam and www.kajol-boards.net

BTW, I forgot to mention earlier--
Some nasty comments should not bother you. I am sure you have had worst experiences in this Bollywood nagariya. :-)
People who are judgmental -- are not true to themselves hence they nitpick on others without knowing them in person. I am sure you have not done any harm to any soul :-)

P.S. You know you are going to more of SRK and Kajol and Rani feedback or questions from you....dont you?

First of all, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for doing what no other director has managed to do for the last 7 years- bringing back our favourite jodi of Srk & Kajol. I send you my best wishes and i know you will make a magnificent film, like you always do. Even though you get nagged on for doing "candy floss" type of films, you give people their money's worth. You entertain them. And for that, we fans can't thank you enough! Looking forward to many more witty blogs :). Peace.

Hey Karan,

I'm very happy that you have started to blog...can't wait to read more of them. Being honest takes a lot of courage. Although I do not watch a lot of Indian movies (and when I do I need subtitles) I never miss a movie made by you. I always make it a point to go watch them in the theaters. Your movies have made me cry, laugh, and angry at times...ha-ha! I do have one question for you...and please answer it honestly. Why do you always star Shah Rukh in your directorial ventures? Don't get me wrong I’m a SRK fan...but I’m curious to know why? Is it because of your comfort level with him -- since you guys are friends? Is it because you think he is the only actor in India that can act well? What is it? I don't know of all the actors in India but I know a few good ones that are as good of actors as SRK.

As a fan, I would like to see you work with all kinds of different actors and actresses. Same people with the same director can get old at times (and this is me being very honest). I can't wait to see "My Name is Khan"

Good luck to you!

Karan plzzz dont have star special appearances in MNIK..I dont mind if you do..of course..your favs are my favs,so I'll love anyone you have in the movie :P and I know im nobody to give advice but I just wanted to share my view...i mean especially if the theme of the film is quite dark compared to what's been expected of your movies so far...and with SRKajol there, you really dont need any other stars anyway...

I heard you signed Shabana Azmi to play SRK's mum in the movie..thats aweesome..refreshing casting..woohoo

Hey Karan...

I think you should appoint someone to clean your blog... of all the unwanted meaningless comments floating around... and it will be gr8 if something can done to restrict multiple posts by the same person under different names...

WOW its really great to see you blogging. I read yesterday that you was going to blog and I was so excited.

Well what can I say that you don't already know

You are a great filmmaker, director and just everything wonderful. Your movies are really really FANTASTICCCCC and beyond. I love all of your films and i wish that you continue to do all your movie with Shahrukh and Shahrukh only because he is the only one that show really really reallyyyyy TRUE acting. I can't wait for your new movie with Shahrukh. I wish that it was going to be out before this year end because then I would at least two full movies to watch with Shahrukh. To be honest SRK movies is the only movies that I really watch because he is the only one that matter.

i think that karan is a great man & all his hatars need to move around. the movie kabhi alvida naa kehna is my all time favorite movie. i dont find anything wrong with it. why? yess its wrong to cheat on your wife but i believe people need to know the reasons why it happens & this movie shows it. i love watching koffee with karan. its a really fun show & funny & i absolutely enjoy watching that show. im also an iranian girl but i think that karan hatars are juss jealous of who he is & has become. so if you're a hatar i feel sorry for you :) & karan, keep up the good work. all your movies have been good to me.

Thanks Karan on starting to share your thoughts with the fans. It’s a great medium to communicate with people, channel your opinions and get the feedback. I just happened to visit your blog accidently through a link but thought about leaving my feedback before losing my way back into the maze of web.

I am living in States for last 11 years and it’s ironic that I started watching Hindi films (mostly of Shah Rukh) after coming to USA. For 20 years of my childhood and grown up life in India, I literally detested most of the Hindi films made between Seventies and Eighties. Though some of the performances were good in that era of the movies, somehow they lacked good scripts, photography, director’s intelligent commitment and variety (same old story of a Disco style Hero, Hero’s poor mother, a villain with a reputation for abducting heroines for ransom and molesting hero’s sister). In fact, I rarely watched Hindi films and my rescue at the time came through classic Westerns. My heros were Clint Eastwood and Mad Max.

Something changed for good during Nineties. I remember watching Bazzigar sometime in nineties and was literally captivated by the story and protagonist (Shah Rukh). Suddenly it seemed like a great change of a new era with power packed storyline and performances. This was the movie that got me started liking towards Hindi movies and especially watch Shah Rukh perform. By far, he is the best actor I have seen in the history of the Hindi Cinemas with a great combination of intelligence, charm, emotions and spontaneity.

My introduction to your movies was through Shah Rukh and liked KKHH for the youthful energy, new storyline, melodious songs and powerful performances. I am glad that there are directors on the horizon like you cutting away from the typical traditional film making. As you mentioned, I also felt that some of the later movies made by you were carrying old hangover and repetition though hate to term those as “bubble gums”. Nonetheless, you have had an exceptional start with a block buster and admire you on taking new challenges. In fact most of your movies are box office record breakers. You have the potential to break through that you have already shown with your first movie. Please keep it up with fresh ideas and I look forward to watch your new film “My Name is Khan”.

I hope to drop into your bloggers park once in a while and keep tossing my couple of cents on the sounding board.

Raj,

P.S. I have seen some really nasty replies on the blog. If possible please filter and remove those going forward.
Raj

Okay. If you can be honest, and have a tough time doing it (I do applaud you for your courage btw), then I can be blunt. Right? Hahaha! Don't worry. Blunt has never been my strong suit, but I will tell you the truth. There is a lot that I wanted to say to you and so I am thankful for this platform that finally I can speak my mind. I'm a bit of a 'perfection' freak, so I'll separate my points to you using words.

KANK

I saw the film when it came out on DVD and my initial reaction was - what the f--- is this? Then I saw the interview that SRK & you gave on NDTV and it gave me a whole new understanding of the film. See, I think you tried your best to make a serious film, but I feel the grandeur of the sets, clothes, etc. drew away from it being a serious film and that explains why I didn't get it at first and felt disappointed. Infidelity came sugar-coated and I think I would've grasped your concept better if it was an out and out serious dramatic film (we have those in the US and they do pretty well at the B.O.).

Anyway, getting back to my point, I understood that you were trying to get a message across through the film that no two people should marry each other unless they absolutely love each other. You were also, and I don't think this part of the message is focused upon in the film at all, trying to convey that marriage should not be thrust upon somebody. Just because we're Indian, doesn't mean that we ultimately HAVE to marry - especially if we're not ready for it.

In the end, I plan on watching the film again with a fresh mind, so your interview actually made me second guess my initial response to it. So, the interview was a fantastic thing on your part.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

I'm sure that you have it in you to be a FANTASTIC dramatic director. You DO have the talent in getting emotional performances from your actors. I know that you didn't direct Kal Ho Naa Ho, but you did pen the script (incidentally, it is one of my all-time favorite films). Now that you are going to direct My Name Is Khan (congratulations on finally getting a title authorized/ copyrighted), please take some friendly advice (because I am absolutely dieing for it to release) keep it simple and keep it dramatic. Please, no musical numbers like you had in KANK. I think a serious and sober form of direction in handling the subject (US and the world post 9/11 with an autistic protagonist) would be the best. Some examples of serious drama that I'd like to reference are "Traffic" and "Crash". It should be a hard-core dramatic film and I think you could use darkness for depth and to give the entire film its own brooding character. Well, just my own opinion really. Very gothic and dark! Unless the film has a happy ending, for which you could add a little light orange to the tint in cinematography.

Wow! I just realized how technical I just got on the blog. Sorry, just advice. You don't have to follow it. After all you are directing it, not me.

Next and last:

PUBLIC PERCEPTION

I will admit that I have heard of the rumors about your sexual preference, but have never given them much thought. I could care less whether you are straight or gay. Then again, I'm pretty sure that I know a person of homosexual disposition (living in NY for the amount of time I have, has a tendency to do that to one) when I see one. You're obviously straight, but a sensitive male and its mostly the influence that your mom has had on you. Sensitivity makes for a much more understanding spouse in a man. So, be happy and be proud of yourself, as I'm sure you've made your parents proud of you.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against homosexuals. I even have my own theory of why the gay-lesbian society has increased in numbers in these past few years (I'll save that for another post).

Lastly, I just want to thank you for the NDTV interview. Whenever Mom and Dad ask me about getting married, I give them my usual answer and now I quote from your interview. For some people, marriage is just not needed and I'm one of those lucky few who doesn't need my own family or the companionship of man or woman in my life. I was born into the best and the only family that I will ever need in this life.

Hi Karan, how are you?
This is Jennifer from New York, wishing you all the best on your upcoming projects and blogs =) I 'm a huuuuge fan of all your works and I loove your seasons of Koffee with Karan! From the beginning with KKHH, to all the way to KANK I can honestly say that Mr. Karan Johar is a master filmmaker and earns his rightful honor as a respected Director and friend. Every film is pact with marvelous art and direction and it shows beautifully. I truly saw that in one of my favorite films, Kabhi Alvida na kehna :) I usually don't analyze a movie in how it was made or how the background really fits in with the story, but your films always brings that special quality out that blows me away. I love your style of movie-making, the storyline, and the whole package you deliver is just, may i say it, "mind-blowing" =D

I hope you will continue making these fantastic movies as you have successfully done already and no matter what others may say, you are truly a genius and a pure heart and please continue to be so. Judging by interviews and your appearances, you do seem to be an amazing human being who possesses intelligence, style, and love for all family, friends and fans. Im glad to see this blogging trend following through because I always wanted to talk to my favorite stars =] and yes you are a bright, shining star and you deserve even more recognition and praise for what you have accomplished.
Keep up the wonderful job and continue being you. May god bless.

With lots of love,
From one of your biggest fans,
Jennifer B.

Hello hello! I am so glad to see you blogging Mr. Johar. I am a huge fan of your work and Shahrukh Khan's and will definitely keep up with this blog! I, too, am a gemini like you was delighted to see you start with your being a gemini and also share the same letter "K" - okay I am sounding like a start struck fan right now.

Your fans are looking forward to Dostana and now ofcourse My Name Is Khan. I do not believe in naming movies with a particular letter like "K" but tell us why you have said alvida to the letter K now. Do you not believe in the letter or have lost faith in your reasoning for using the letter in the first place?

Also, it takes guts to be honest and kudos to you for that. Or atleast the "dishonest honesty" part. You know, you mention the opulence, itemsongs, grandeur in your films. whats wrong with that? Intellectual cinema is great and its awesome to get critical acclaim but your fans thoroughly enjoyed the light moments and the opulence in your movies too. Why do you call it an old hangover? Didn't you believe in those movies when you made them?

Anywho, I am a fan and even when your films are not that great and don't do so well, us fans know you won't dissappoint us. Hope you get all that you cravei.e intellectual acceptance, critical acclaim, blog praise and festive applause.

Lets start with blog praise ...You got a great blog Mr. Johar!!!!!!! There, now lets get cracking on the others :-)

Best,
Kaush

Hello Karan,

Glad you decided to take the plunge into blogville. Nice blog. Refreshingly candid.

Ignore the losers and their idiotic comments. You know it is just a trapping that comes with being a star. Keep the sense of humour alive! You have a lot of fans sending positive energy your way. You will do great.

I wish you a smooth and great movie making journey. A non-compromising, non-buckling, satisfying experience.

I am very much looking forward to it.

All the Best,
Nicha

Thanks a trillion zillion for bringing kajolsrk together onscreen. I have literally have no words in my dictionary to explain my happinesss. It took 7 yrs for that to happen. Kajol according to me is just the best best best actress i have seen anywhere in the world. I would like to tell u that u take the best from her. The way u present kajol is just a treat to watch. Nobody can visualize kajol like the way u do. Trust me when i watch kajol in kuch kuch and k3g, my heart feels that energy and that enthusiam which is the best feeling in the world. Kajol, srk, and karan are lethal combination. I am ready again to get bowl over by a cult film in the making

Hello Karan! Nice to see you blogging. It is after all, the "in thing" to do! Haha.

Anyway, I just want to first of all say that you certainly write quite well.

To be totally honest, I could care less about your personal life because it is none of my business which stars you associate with and all that. I will focus on your films in my response to your first blog entry.

I personally don't feel KKHH is your finest work even though people go ga-ga over it. I thought it was good, just good. As over the top and melodramatic as it is, I love K3G to bits and it is probably one of the few ultra-commercial, ultra-glamorous films I can enjoy whenever and wherever. Perhaps it is the stars (minus Kareena who I thought was horrid), the great music or its ability to make you laugh and cry all at the same time, but it was DEFINITELY a job WELL DONE! KANK on the other hand, well I think you summed it up well in your blog. Nice attempt, new theme, but I never felt like you went the whole way. Yes, you had the courage to make something different. But you didn't have the strength to do it completely. And for me, as an avid film-goer, that is KANK's biggest flaw.

I know what I think of your films is probably irrelevant to you, however I think it's much more appropriate to talk about THIS rather than some of the other CRAP people are posting!

Looking forward to MY NAME IS KHAN and please, PLEASE, don't go halfway and turn around. Go all the way. You can do it, you are a born filmmaker and you have it in you to tackle box office AND critics. GO FOR IT.

But please, don't re-package the Preity/Rani/Amitabh combo with SRK and Kajol LOL! We've got some brilliant actors in India, give them a chance!

hey good to see u blogging . looks like u realise ur msitakes in kank and hope u can go full with khan and avoid unnecessary melodrama .

also i dont think shibani bahtija scriptwriter of kank is a good one ,. she has written kank and fanna both were terrible in writing . still i hope she proves me wrong and gives u a good one in khan .

and one more thing someone here is desperately ttrying to degrade naachgaana.com .and its members .

BTw u have casted Konkana and Ranbir in one of ur production . now thats the most interesting cast i have heard . if possible one day do cast Srk-vidya or Srk-konkana now that would be interesting to see .

Raaaaahhh.. *faints * collects herself.

Okay... after I've got that over, I might comment like a halfway intelligent woman. :p

Dishonest honesty... interesting concept... but not entirely restricted to the film fraternity I believe. Being human means for the most part to exercises a prudent measure of dishonest honesty. It's called politeness. In some respect it's also called self-preservation. If I were to voice every opinion I hold I would soon find myself very unpopular.

Turning to doing those films one would like to watch isn't the worst way to go about it, I think. I write those I would like to watch. And maybe will... one of these days.

It's when you deviate from what you yourself like to watch, just because you want to please others, that the film begins to suffer. I for my part critique in KANK a certain... hm... heavy-handed comedy attempt. It's there for the sake of it... and doesn't do anything for the characters... on the contrary, it compromises them in my opinion. The worst is the football ... you really wanted to make Dev such an incompetent idiot?

I think Dev could have been comic in a different way if comedy was needed. In a way that used his grumpiness against himself maybe. It would have been a more tragic comedy... but I think it would have worked better for the film. Slapstick can be very funny... but its danger is that it is there just for itself. My personal feeling is that you weren't quite brave enough to carry through your theme and put in the comedy to ... smooth over the controversial theme. Didn't work.

Naturally I have an European's film eyes. I am used to a slightly different cinema where film makers think you have to adhere to one genre. I don't agree with that... one thing about bollywood movies is the fact that they can run the whole gamut of genres... and I like that. I like the music and the dancing... but I also realise while I am writing my own scripts that I prefer them to have an integral part in the action. Personally I think the music and dancing is a great way to allow the audience into the interior world of the actors where they voice what they would not say outright. Its a medium European films lack and can add a lot of depth to the film.

I like bubblegum cinema. I go to the cinema to be entertained. Doesn't mean that everything has to be happy go lucky... I can be entertained by a tragic ending too... if I come out of the cinema with a sense of... satisfaction. I won't be entertained by being lectured, preached at, or bemissioned (huh... horrible word but I can't think of saying it differently)

The honesty of the film maker is probably the most important thing to carry through a film. I think you are enough of a film goer to know what you yourself like or dislike... if you stay honest to your own likes I think other people will like your films too. I know I will.

Hi Karan,

This is Manish.
I like your blog (till now at least!!!) I'm sorry to admit it but the fact is I'm NOT a fan of your style of filmmaking...It's not that I understand cinema completely but whatever little I know about it, I certainly don't like your kind of cinema. The only film I like was K2H2.
But I really & genuinely feel that you CAN and SHOULD try something which no one can ever expect from you.
Anyways, you've lacs of fans and you would like to interact with them instead of wasting your time on a NON-fan like me...

But keep it up and PLEASE don't jump into the bandwagon of the bloggers who are using it for their personal rivalry...

May God bless you always and keep writing...

Hey Karan.....

Welcome to the world of Blog (lol, that sounds like an inter-galactic greeting!) ...and be prepared for some nasty surprises. There are plenty of people here who need some manners, some balance....and a life.

Honestly, I won't say I am your HUGE fan. The things you admitted are your "hangover" in your films are precisely the ones that prevent me from liking them completely. I thought I was one of the rare few people who liked KANK , but I'm glad to see there are many of my kind here. Personally, it is the best ATTEMPT you have ever made to show what, I suspect, you really feel about life and relationships. I could appreciate the thought behind the movie. But the execution was clumsy. There was too much unnecessary comedy, the Sexy Sam track was completely unwanted and obnoxious, and there was hardly any focus on what Dev-Rhea's married life was like BEFORE he meets Maya. Also, too many songs (though I loved all of them!)

On the plus side, the scene where Maya sits on the bench and questions why she is getting married in the first place, is my favourite. These are the very questions I have asked myself whenever the question of marriage popped up. Someone here said that it raises the issue why we should get married for the heck of it...that's exactly how I feel. Is everyone made for marriage? And what happens when those who are not, are compelled into it by social pressure?

I seriously think you should make a sequel to KANK, focussing on Dev-Maya's life after their union. and this time, please cut out the clutter!

Your finest quality is your ability to laugh at yourself. I'm glad to see that surface in your blog. Just keep it from turning flippant. Wish you all the best for My Name is Khan....will wait eagerly for it.

Oh and btw.....try taking new talents too, not just ones who satisfy your obsession for star sparkle!

Anjali

Anjali - I'm so glad to meet someone else who loves KANK! Hi! :D

I'm a KANKatik all the way... ever since the launch of the film till today :D

..........................

Hey I see an admin has been doing some work here overnight, thats good..cleaned the comments up a bit ;-)

But a suggestion: maybe you should make people sign up and become proper members to be allowed to post..that way you can avoid those rude people and also make sure no one is pretending to be another celeb (seems there's a possibility we have wannabe srk, katrina, anurag, kajol etc here haha)

take care xxxx

by the way...you guys still didnt sort out the problem about us not being able to post comments from Internet Explorer... :P Still having to use Firefox =( LOL

Karan, you aren't going to win intellectual acclaim and festival praise with My Name is Khan, because
1)It has Shahrukh Khan
2)It is written by Shibani "KANK and Fanaa" Bathija
3)It has Shahrukh Khan
4)It stars Kajol
5)It has Shahrukh Khan
6)Because you don't have a clue about how to use the camera to tell a story."Mitwaa" is the quite possibly the worst cut song in recent film history(notice,I said film and NOT cinema?)
7)It has Shahrukh Khan
8)You don't have a clue that you need to localise foreign locations into your films when you shoot there. You don't 'tour' them.Only those with an apetite for such opulent pleasures will praise you for that.BTW,the way New York was shot in KANK was pukeworthy.I bet I'd do a better job than your DP
9)It has Shahrukh Khan
10)Because your films begin to ooze familiarity before one even realizes what they are doing to you.
11)It has Shahrukh Khan.

I did think you were intelligent before reading this, but this article of yours has really impressed me. Here's a man who is reinventing himself - without regretting the past and is openly asking what he wants - "intellectual acclaim". Sure you'll get it dude - unless this article of yours was “dishonest honesty” !!
