Hey everyone:

I’m really sorry for not blogging quite as regularly as I’d like to. Many reasons attribute to that. I’ve been swamped with work, with deadlines to meet and have simultaneously been combating the viral (and I will kill the next person who says "it’s in the air.")

I have been reading all the comments posted on the blog and want to address a few in particular:

Many felt that I had left out Kajol’s performance in “U Me Aur Hum” in my shortlist of specials from this year of cinema. My actions should speak for this already, because I actually think Kajol is possibly the best actor the fraternity has seen in a while and I do believe that her genius is unquestionable. Maybe I’m so absorbed by her character in my film that I’ve not been able to go beyond that and judge her other work. I apologize for having left her out but it’s quite possible that I take anything she does on screen for granted because she really is just that good!

The current status on “My Name is Khan” is that we start filming on the 15th of December in Los Angeles. The ensemble cast has recently been finalized and we have started the process of song recording. I’m going for my final location recce with my Director of Photography, Ravi K. Chandran, Production Designer, Sharmishta Roy and Costumes Designers, Manish Malhotra and Shiraz Siddique. To say I’m nervous is still understating my state of mind because there are some moments in the day where I do feel extremely incapable of handling this complex film. But I suppose venturing into new territory and tapping into the right tone is a challenge I look forward to taking on.

Rizvan Khan, the protagonist in the film, suffers from Aspergers Syndrome (high functioning Autism) and Shibani Bhatija, the screenplay writer of the film has researched this disorder very accurately and I can’t wait to see Shah Rukh portray it. The message that runs right through the film is in strong support of humanity, which at the end of the day is the only way to rise above any of the cultural or religious differences that continue to engulf us.

To give you an insight into what’s happening behind Dharma doors; “Wake Up Sid!” (with Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma) is about to start filming in a day or two (post the industry strike) and Ayan the director is heading towards a nervous breakdown. The “Dostana” website is up (http://www.dostanathefilm.com) and can also be linked via the main Dharma Productions website. Also, the music released today. Again I would love to hear what you think of the soundtrack once you give it a listen.

So that’s all for now. My steam inhalation awaits me.

Love and kough syrup,

Karan

p.s. belated Eid Mubarak to everyone. I hope the new season brings in lots of love, positivity, and peace of mind.

Hello Karan!

I am in a business trip, in beautiful town Ul'yanovsk(Not LA, not yet). I am patient with a flu.
A baritonal descant is my voice now. I hope that it will stop.
I did not see “U Me Aur Hum”.
But I will correct it.
I will find time and will watch this movie.

Have a nice day.
With sincerity,

Namaste Karan from USA!
The Washington DC area to be more precise.

My question to you is... when will we get to see some filming happen in Washington DC or it's surrounding parts?!!!

It's got some GREAT film value as most NRI's know what the area's buildings look like!

I'm excited to know that you'll be filming in LA though!!
Thanks for the date! I'll let my LA friends know! ;O)

I also want to add that I agree as well that Kajol is the #1 actress of our generation and know that you feel this way from watching her in your many movies AND watching your great show Koffee with Karan!

BTW, thanks for taking the time to actually blog and respond to "us". I look forward to your movies and am whole-heartedly in support of you and your projects!

Take care and feel better!

Hi Karan,

Hope you get well soon. This is part and parcel of life.

I heard the "Jaane Kyun Dil" of DOSTANA. Liked it ....and Vvishal has certainly given the song a peppy "sound" . I have to admit that I downloaded the track . But that was purely because I don't think it has come out in Dubai yet. Though if out of the 6 tracks I feel even 3-4 are very good , I shall surely buy the CD ( even though its quite expensive here , sells for 300 - 350 INR )

The song promo of "Jaane Kyun" looks very cool and has a whiff of freshness about it.....Priyanka is looking very good and am sure the movie shoudl be fun....waiting eagerly for November 14 ( guess that's the release date).

Wish you all the best!

Hey

Always great to hear from you , your posts are always vaired however unlike Big B or Aamir they seem to be less personal and more formal...conscious descision?? Whilst we get to know you via KWK and NDTV Night out there seems to be a personal, more intimate side, always masked from media/fans....probably a good way to be.

VERY excited about My name is Khan - the task of portraying an individual with Aspergers Syndrome will be difficult - I hope a book will be created of the making?? - K3G book was a collectors item.

Dostana - Jaane Kyun, really chilled and cool - lovin' it
I will be buying the album this weekend!

Buy from the stores people - Great music deserves to be collected.

Hi Karu,

This is my 1st time commenting on your blogs. Let me tell you this, I am the biggest fans of your movies, I mean you can't believe, but I had watched Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, and Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham almost like 25 times and will keep watching forever, I learned a lot about film making from these movies of yours. One day, I would love to make great movies like you make. BTW, I live in North Carolina, US, and I just read in this blog that you are going to start My Name is Khan on Dec. 15th in LA. I was wondering can I assist you on the sets for few weeks(2-3 weeks) in Dec. while I am on break from college? I would like to learn different things about movie making. Please? I am just so amazed by the movies that you made at such a young age, salute to your creativeness. I also love Aditya Chopra's movies as much as I love your movies. Say "Hi" to Shahrukh, Kajol, and Adi, please.

I saw Dostana promos and the movie looks promising just like your other movies in past. I love Miami so much. You shot such a excellent scenes of Miami in the movie. Will definetely watch it in theater, can't wait till Nov. 14th. Abhi, John, and Priyanka rocks. Great casting. The music is also excellent. I am sure its gonna be the biggest hit of the year. Thanks for making wonderful movies.

Take care,
Luv yaa,

Oh Karan, I'm so happy you posted again, I was missing your musings. :) Feel better! I know colds are going around here (Toronto) as well.

I loved U, Me Aur Hum, but really, ONLY because Kajol was amazing. The script failed her somewhat.

Wow. Asperger's Syndrome. That will be so interesting to see. There was an episode of House MD with a child with Asperger's, and I would LOVE to see Shahrukh Khan play that role. Should be unbelievable if done appropriately!!

Can't wait for Dostana. :D Hopefully I will get hold of the music soon!

Finally, it was great to see you at the Drona premiere. Don't work too hard, though, Karan! :)

I do enjoy your movies, but there are ups and downs in each movie.

Lets see what this new movie My Name is Khan turns out to be, appears to be a sensitive topic. Good luck.

If ever I manage to hear the music of dostana bfore the film release will let you know.

Finally some word about My name is Khan! Thank you Karan!
Being a big admirer of your work, there is something I want to complain about .
Karan, you are making a film on a very serious topic, so I hope you will avoid jingoism. Do not forget, you have non desi fans too and the way you portray non desis in your films ...mmmm let's say spoils a mood a tad.
I think you are smart and sensetive enough to be above all that.
It will be really nice to see a normal non desi person in your film, not an overacting screeching bat .;)
Have everything work out for you in Washington DC?
God Bless and Good luck!

Hey Karan,
Let me first congratulate you on the tremendous success of Dostana album . I heard the songs and i felt that the songs rock.Vishal-Shekhar have once again done it to the tops and they are here to stay .
About ' MY NAME IS KARAN' dont you feel that the story line is similar to that of TZP , especially that the lead character has some disorder and how the world should identify and recognize it . I may sound foolish but that's how it looks at the first instant of reading.

Anyways i have tremendous faith in you and i'm sure you along with Shahrukh will be able to pull this one off well and make a different and an entertaining film. ALL THE BEST.

Hey Karan,
I was very happy when I came to know that you have started blogging. I have read all your blogs and was waiting to get an opportunity to be the first one to write a comment so I can be certain that you will see it next time you check the comments. Let me start by saying that I am a BIGGG fan of your work; movies and TV show included. Special mention to when you were on pachvi pass and you were hilarious.
Karan, I wanted to tell you that I did not like certain aspects of you KANK. I'm not talking about the whole subject matter or what you were trying to portray or anything but I'm talking about the roles in the film itself. Being a die-hard SRK fan, I did not like DEV SARAN'S role in the film. SRK is god when it comes to performing any role that is given to him but what I personally disliked was Dev's character in the movie. When you made kkhh or k3g, Rahul's character in both movies was loved and adored by everyone and I believe SRK is best in those kinds of roles. All us SRK fans love our hero singing, dancing, cracking jokes and smiling in his films and that part was missing from his character in KANK. Karan I love the work that you do and will always do but I believe you should make more movies that are like you first 3 films. Don't try to do these "art" kind of movies even though you manage to hide the "arty" side of the movie very well by putting a lot of glamour into it.
Anyways good luck with everything else that you have going on and also if possible, please say a big hello to SRK from Ankur.

By the way, Dostana promos look awesome and when is the next season of koffee with Karan going to start??

Good Luck with 'My Name is Karan'. If you leave out melodrama, extravagance and silly comedy, am sure you'll excel in transforming what's on paper to what it could be on the screen, with poise.

After some initial trials, Dostana's soundtrack comes across as likeable but really nothing great as one has typically come to expect from Dharma Productions. Jaane Kyun is the only song that appeals in the very first attempt. The others, are okayish and may appeal more when seen than just when heard.

On a related note, I cannot wait to hear what S-E-L would do in My Name is Karan. Looking forward to that

I heard the Dostana music, and it's decent. Not the best music I've heard from Vishal and Shekhar, but not the worst either. It's somewhere in between. Maybe it might grow on me though. As you must have heard, TZP was sent as India's entry to the Oscars, do you think this was the right choice or should they have sent A Wednesday? Personally it's a tough call because I loved both films, but I feel A Wednesday would have a greater chance than TZP. Are you planning on having an extensive documentary style making of My Name is Khan? From the brief information you have given us on the film, it sounds like a special film in the making.

p.s. you're not the only sick one, im sick too, hopefully both of us feel better

Thank you Karan... for replying to a couple of questions posted here... We have actually been discussing a lot about why left Kajol out of your list... and we are glad to get an answer from you... And the story of MNIK sounds very scary... I know an autistic kid myself... and I can imagine how tough it will be to portray as one... and dis is the extreme of autism as I understand... very scary... I really hope it is shown on screen just the way it actually is... definitely a very challenging role for SRK... and also for Kajol if she is playing the role of SRK's wife... I don't even know if an autistic person can lead a marriage... i mean, it sounds impossible to me...

As far as I know of autism, autistic people get angry for very very small things, they shout, they scream, they will even hit you... they seclude themselves from the rest of the world... they spend a lot of time themselves... they can't eat properly... they mess things up... wow... its not easy... its very challenging film... for everybody associated... GUD LUCK!!! I think you need a lot of luck!!!

Dear Karan,

Thanks for this nice Blog. Now when you have told us the issue you film deal with, I also can't wait to see Shah Rukh portray it. I took your words, I know but I do not know how to say the same thing in a different way in English.

But you are right - this is new and different. This is also a very sensitive topic, which have to be dealt with very carefully. But I am sure you can make it. I wish you all the luck you need for this.

This film will make Shah Rukh a better actor as he is right now. I do not want to say he is not a good actor, I love seeing him on screen everytime I have the chance, but the topics are mostly similiar. Family, love, friendship.... - these are important things, also for me. And all these roles have a little bit of Shah Rukh in it, but often the same part of him. There are exeptions like 'Chak De India' and yes also 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' which showed us also love but in a different way. There where more movies from his earlier times. But the topic you have choosen, I know why you are nervous. You will make a good, hopefully very good film and this will show all of us again that you are a genious director.

With lots of love from Germany
Kathy
P.S.: I wish you would come with you film for premiere to Germany first! We would be so happy ;-)

Hi Ya Karan,

I sincerely you feel better.

I love reading your blog and feel only if I could write so beautifully like you.

I bought the CD of Dostana and feel as time is passing by we are loosing the hindi touch. Why does our lyrics have to have english words? Why are so much heading to west. Why are we not proud of our lingo and culture.

Why dont you make a simple movie with simple story line without any English language used.

Please dont get me wrong I am not against the language at all, but I feel we are loosing touch with our own lingo. One example, I work in a Russian owned company and all the executives are very well versed in English but I will tell you one thing they have not lost the touch with their own language. When they are speaking to each other they only speak in Russian. Half of admin work is in Russian.

Anyway you may disagree but I think it is high we get rid of the western infulence before it takes over our lives fully. The movie is one medium that today's youths have big infulence of.

All the best to Dostana and My Name is Khan.

Keep well.

Thank you so much for the information about MNIK, so you have autism as the main disorder in your protagonist character. Well I wonder, how can we see romance between SRK and KAJOL?

AND for the music of DOSTANA, Ibought a CD as you say that don't download it, I have to tell you this Dostana music REALLY DISAPPOINTS ALLOT.
I preferred FASHION music CD over DOSTANA.
All I want to say is I dont want this with MNIK.
WISH YOU BEST OF LUCK FOR EVERYTHING.

I'm so excited for My Name Is Khan and very much look forward to how Shahrukh's going to portray such a complex character! It will be a tough job but I believe in Shahrukh.

Your movies (minus KANK, heh) have all been my fav. so can't wait for this one!

Just a curious question...will SRK start filming on December 15th as well? Won't he be busy with Rab ne promotion then IPL?

...to be very honest.....nothing created that sensation in my heart, which i felt while hearing.....tum paas aye..........suraj hua maddham...........or the kal ho na ho heartbeat... And i questioned myself!! Karan Johar, of all the people..didnt hear the music!!!! Songs arent that bad...........or maybe its still thehangover in me of the horribly irritating music of tashan by V&S!!!

i do love desi girl..apart from the corny "desi girl" term............i sincerely hope that the music grows on to me .......but then , even himesh reshammiya grows onto me sometimes.........

I MISS THE KARAN JOHAR feeling!! i really do.......

Dear Karan,

Its interesting to see you take up an interesting story line something more suited to the likes of Govind Nihalani or Khalid Mohamed. You are the king of Sobs and I mean that in a good way. After all to move people is something essentially required in todays impatient and extremely intolerant world.

Do not get trapped into this peer pressure of having to show the broad spectrum of artistic talent in direction. Await more sob fests from you . Honest.

hii karan
its sad to hear that you are sick . i hope you get well soon . i just want to ask one thing from you? why is it that you show so much happiness in your movies? why no one in your movie is sad? why do your movies show happy endings? bcoz i think happy people are extinct now. its sometimes hard to relate to your characters. i want to see characters who have a void in their life. may be i will feel like a part of the crowd if you show little insanity , hollowness or madness that we go through every single day of our life. well......... i hope you get well soon and kick start your projects . all the best for everything . i hope you get the heavenly intervention that you deserve.

Dear Karan,

I'm so sorry about the flu. I was looking out for a new post every day. I hope you'll get better soon. Just get plenty of rest and drink lots of liquids. Stay away from anyone you like or you will spread it to them and listen to your body. If you need to sleep, do that. There is no treatment for the flu since antibiotics do not work against viruses. They are used if you get bronchitis or pneumonia as a complication of the flu. Most people who get the flu recover completely in ten days to two weeks :)

karan all the best for 'My Name Is Khan'...the only thing i want to tell u is can u please dress ur actors in a more realistic way...i mean most of us dont wear designer clothes everyday... ...if u ought to make a gritty and realistic movie this time i hope u just dont push the envelope this time but also tear it..lol..
i think kank would have been a much better film if it was tighter and less opulent...i think u got trapped in ur own comfort zone which u yourself were trying to break...
dostana soundtrack rocks btw...waitin 4 da movie...

I am quit excited as well about he Dostana music. And by the reviews that I have read, it seems a clear winner. Waiting for my cd to arrive.

What are the other shooting locations of MNIK in addition to LA? (I live in NY) Would you mind sharing with us the additional cast of the film after SRK and Kajol.

BTW: Did I tell you how big a fan I am and the only talk shows worth watching are the ones with you and Farah Khan because you both make simplest of shows the spiciest.

Good luck and God Bless

It is indeed a pleasure to read your blog. THis is my first comment so hv a lot to say. i love your movies bt I expect u to make a movie completely different from wht u hv been doing so far because u r one of the talented filmmakers we hv in hindi film industry. I hope udnt gt caught in usual family drama.
I am doing my MBA at IIM ahmedabad and interested in studying the distribution and logistic activities required for a movie release. had called ur office sometime back and had also sent a mail to the concerned person bt did nt get any reply. I beleive this process can be improved if studied in deatlai bt will need some data for the study. If u r interested please do reply.

Hi and sorry for the cold, but let me wish you a very happy eid as you mentionned in your ps.
Also may I remind you that your hero SRK truly personnified the word humain whose rise above culture and religion to marry his lady.
Do not also be surprised if SRK does portray the caracter that you have designed for him but I think he will go beyond wih his own will because he always say that ''IT'S NEVER THE CARACTER PLAYED BY SHAH RUKH KHAN BUT SHAH RUKH KHAN PLAYED THE CARACTER BECAUSE I KNOW MYSELF BETTER THAN THE CARACTER''.
Also we were pleasantly surprised by the presence of the entire family of SRK at the DRONA PREMIERE to support the BACHCHAN PARIVAR.
Just one more thing don't be absorbe by more and more production and let some other people handle DARMA without being selfless and come back to the talk show and directing movies because as your audience, we are truly missing and we do not want to have another year like 2008 that we didn't have te pleasure seeing your all time favourite heron on screen.
I do not know if somebody has noticed ut excep BOOTNATH we did not see SRK in movies this year so I tried to watch as many time as possible all the shows for the awards that you have entend toguether.
We are truly missing so Come back soon and BEST OF LUCK FOR DOSTANA and I was wrong telling about the way you have been absorb by DHARMA PRODUCTION because you have every rigth, it's your heritage and legacy that your father left behind to his only child.

Really really curious and excited about Rizvan Khan. He sounds like a complex, multi-dimensional and exciting character. Can't wait to see him portrayed by Shah Rukh. He's gonna be phenomenal....I'm already getting goosebumps imagining how this film is gonna turn out.

Also really excited for Dostana. The promos look really fun and energetic! John and Priyanka are especially looking extra-Hott!

Hey I`m the first one this time! Eid mobarak to you and of course to your muslim best friend !!! .I too hope that this new season helps us (especially me) be tolerant, overcome the problems and negativities and make best possible decisions. well,I completely agree with you about kajol.she (and doubtlessly her cousin rani) are one of the most talented actresses I know (among iranian ,bollywood and hollywood actors and actresses ).she can bring a very ordinary role to life so that you can believe and live with it easily.you`re right she`s just wonderful !The short summery you gave from mynameiskhan honestly seemed interesting, but I can exactly feel how difficult your job is going to be as the director and I truly believe that no one but king khan could make it.Autistic people are quite rare in society but dealing with them IS pretty difficult.By the way I don`t know whether you `d rather portray their special kind of genius for music or math or not,but I think considering them will make your special film rather specific! at least talk to Ms shibani about it. best of luck!!!!!

Hi! Karan,
I can't wait for seeing the movie: My Name Is Khan. It's great that you have brought the SRK-Kajol on screen magic again. But you haven't talked about any other actors of the film yet. There was buzz that Ranbir Kapoor would play a side-role. Then the buzz became Imraan Khan would replace Ranbir. Are they true? Is that right that talent actress Shabana Azmi has agreed to play the role of SRK's mom? Was your first choice for the role Joya Bachan? Did SRK convince you to throw her out?

Hello!!

Firstly, get well soon, Karan! Hope you are feeling better today!

I must say, the songs in all your films are always a highlight. I love all the songs from Dostana and the track, 'Desi Girl' is particularly awesome! It's so catchy and blends both western and Indian beats perfectly! Dostana is just the kind of album we have been waiting for!

Here in Australia, we are all really excited about your upcoming new film, 'My Name is Khan'. All your films have become our family classics, be it, KKHH, K3G, KHNH or KANK! Keep the good films coming!

All the best to you and your team for your new projects!

Thanks for the update on My Name Is Khan! I am really looking forward to this - well, actually, I'm really looking forward to all Dharma Productions' upcoming movies! Do you have a set date for when you're filming in Washington, DC? My friend lives nearby, so we were hoping to stop by and possibly catch a glimpse of you all filming!

Also, I'm really interested in the bit about Asperger's Syndrome. I know quite a few people who have it, so I'll be interested to see how it's portrayed in the film.

And please stop getting me so excited for Dostana when I have to wait over a month to see it - it's not fair! XD

Finally, do get better soon!!

(Also, sorry if this gets posted multiple times - the anti-spam code is giving me trouble for some reason. >.<)

FINALLY u give us details about MNIK..ive been waiting for soooooooooooooooo long. Its my most awaited movie of all time...SRK n KAJOL together again.WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nic move to use Ravi.K Chandran.I think he's a better DOP than Anil Mehta.

Dostana's music is rocking.Though ur earlier soundtracks have been better, but still,Dostana is great nonetheless
Its promos are really exciting. The look is so fresh. The first film to have such a great fresh look after SALAAM NAMASTE.I hope it goes on to become a huge success

Wake Up Sid also seems interesting.Dharma Productions really is in quite a high gear theses days.
GOOD LUCK with all ur projects.take care

hi karan,

wish u a very happy nav raatree.. i sincerely hope dat u get well soon.. with what you've been telling me it should be fine as u r regular wid ur medication..nonetheless, there are some websites online which give some natural home remedies which u might wana try like grape juice wid honey for cough.

very true indeed, kajol undoubtedly such a talented artist. as u've said shez jst a genius. she knws hw 2 portray each an every emotion to perefction, and of course more so if u r d director ;)
but shez truly my favourite and a brilliant actress.

yesteray only i was thinking dat ur post sud b coming soon and here it is :)) it happened last time as well.. woh, i'm kinda hving d instinct wen u gna post ;))

i can undetd dat u were busy as i've been checking ur pics at events, and of course needlesss to day dat i keep admiring ur clothes.. love ur dressing style karan, u're jst awesome!!
may manish forgive me (hez fantastic) but i dont think dat u need anyone as ur costume designer for ur movies..

a movie on a disorder will undoubtedly be a hit.. i've done my degree in psychology and have been lucky to meet autistic children, some of em r scary but lots of em r so friendly, emotional and adorable.. rest assured dat d movie gna do well at d box office :)) esp since srk is d actor, mindblowing!!! i cnt wait to see him already ;)

i'll definitely give u my thoughts once i listen to s tracks.

for now take good care of urself n get well soon.
God bless.

Cheers wid kisses

Sorry to hear that you have the viral and hope that you will feel better soon.

HI KARAN!!
HOPE YOU ARE OVER THE VIRAL!!

I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO DOSTANA ALTHO IT DOES NOT HAVE MY HERO SHAH RUKH IN IT (NOW THIS IS EXCEPTIONAL FOR ME AS I DON'T LIKE WATCHING NON-SRK MOVIES;-))

ABSOLUTELY THRILLED THAT MNIK WILL START ROLLING ON 15 DECEMBER DESPITE ALL THE DOOMSTERS SAYING IT WOULD BE DELAYED UNTIL SPRING! I DONT THINK I CAN WAIT THAT LONG....I'M SIMPLY DYING TO SEE IT!!!

IT WILL BE A CHALLENGING ROLE FOR SHAH RUKH BUT I AM VERY CONFIDENT THAT HE WILL PULL IT OFF... IN SPADES (AS USUAL)!!

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WILL BE SHOOTING AT THE WHITE HOUSE? THAT WOULD BE SOOO COOL ESPECIALLY WITH THE NEW PRESIDENT (OBAMA??) THERE!!

PLEAAASE DONT USE THE NY SKYLINE AS A BACKDROP OF THIS NEXT FILM AS WE HAVE SO BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT!!

COULD I PLEASE ALSO MAKE A SUGGESTION ABOUT THE NON-DESI ACTORS YOU CAST IN YOUR FILM?? PLEASE GET BETTER STANDARD ACTORS AS SOMETIMES, THEIR BIT PARTS REALLY GRATE (THERE WERE SOME TERRIBLE ONES IN KANK AND IN SWADES) BECAUSE THEIR ACTING WAS WOODEN COMPARED WITH THE EMOTIONAL INDIANS IT REALLY JARRED THE SENSES....I KNOW THIS WOULD PROBABLY ADD TO YOUR BUDGET BUT THE END PRODUCT HAS GOT TO BE PERFECT...I DONT EXPECT ANYTHING LESS FROM YOU NOW ;-)))

KISSES & KWIK KURES!!

Namaste from Germany, Mr. Karan !

I hope you are feeling better now. Actually, I ,too, have a virus infection - and I have to say it is all your fault. Ever since I picked up a "Bollywood" movie DVD in our public library three months ago, I have the Hindi movie virus - and I hope it will never leave me ... In the meantime I have seen many wonderfully told stories with great songs and choreographies. My favourites are your films, though.
I am very much looking forward to seeing MNIK. It seems to be a highly ambitious project, but I am sure you will find the perfect balance of serious, humanistic message and entertaining elements. Please make sure you do not loose your sense of humour and irony and keep your safe hand for great songs.
Here in Germany we will probably be able to see the synchronized version only a year after it`s release. Too bad ...
Caused by my interest in Hindi movies I have read a lot about today`s life in India and also about it`s history and religions. For me as a raised catholic (but tolerant person) the similarities between the religious traditions are striking. We are not so far away from each other after all. I just found out that this year`s diwali starts on my birthday. If I were superstitious I would believe this to be a good omen for a lifelong fascination ...
Finally 2 points I would like to make:
-You are perfectly right about Kajol.
-Please stay away from Mr SRKhan as long as you have the flu, so that you do not infect him. We desperately expect him here in Munich for his "Temptation reloaded" concert on Oct.18th. So please do not make him cough ...

Greetings and all signs of respect and admiration to you, Farah Khan and SRK and their families,
Rosma from Munich

P.S.: The movie which made me fall for Hindi films without knowing anything about "Bollywood" movies or actors at all was: K3G ...

Dear Karan,

so, first I want to tell you get well soon!

I will try to write what I have written yesterday because I do not know what happened but it is gone ;(. It does not matter I would always give and take a second chance.

Thanks for writing (I have to say that because this is extraordinarily, really, I think that) You are busy with organizing your shooting in the US, ill and also busy with many other things to do. Whether the others write their blogs by themselves or not, whenever I read yours it is different.

Now to the topics you have mentioned above. First I always love Shah Rukh playing in your films. This is special everytime. Despite this the characters he played so far have many similiarities, also the movies. That is for me okay.Really - because I love him in this schematical Rahul-character. The exeption was Dev in 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna', we all loved Dev and also did not like what he has done. But you have manged that we all in the end thought it was right to get divorced. I knew of interviews that Shah Rukh had his own difficulties playing Dev but in the end it was a love story only a bit different of others but awesome.

I have thought about your blog for a while and I think the topic you have choosen right now is a very sensitve one. I have no doubt that Shah Rukh will be able to get into it. Admittedly playing such a character is a very big (I do not know the right word in English in German it is called Herausforderung) challenge. Particularly when you both have seen Dustin Hoffman in 'Rainman'. I know I should not comparing the Indian film industry with Hollwood but in this case I have to do it. I love Bollywood-movies but I also know how they deal with such issues. There are some exeptions during the last few years like 'BLACK' and 'Tare Zameen Paar' but there are many other films which failed in dealing with respect with such a serious topic.

I know that your mentality is more like 'Tare Zameen..' and so I wish you all the best and also fun with all you stars in the USA. You are able to manage this topic with respect and nevertheless you will again create a wonderful and enjoyable movie.

If you see Shah Rukh before he leaves for Germany in 12 days tell him we are all looking forward to see him here. We are so happy about he is coming.

By the way, when will you come to Germany again. How big is the chance that you will once shoot a film in Berlin?(for example). I wish you would come with your film for the opening night to Berlin. I would love seeing you all together here in my hometown.

That dear Karan was all for today until you next blog.
Take care and God bless you, your family and friends

Dear Friend

I am sad by your illness and I am glad that you have not lost the desire to work with it ... but, on reflection... I think you have no other choice than to work even if you're sick. That is the disadvantage of working for oneself. Those who do not have that privilege, we can stay in bed as long as necessary. Many years ago I learned that nobody is indispensable in an office.

For cough, I usually add honey to Chay (sorry ... I don’t like koffe very much) and do not take too hot, it irritates the throat and then it is worse.

And I'm sure that viruses are not in the air, usually are in another person that you've approached too.

The only thing you can do is to drink a lot of juices and stay in bed well covered, but without much sweat without going cold (and this is a very difficult).

Do not take this as the start of a council post, it's just something I usually do and work for me. It is possible that the difference in climate or food habits, these home remedies do not work.

With regard to the stress of your job, try not to block. When I get very nervous and it seems that it can not with what I have pending, usually take a couple of minutes for me. I feel comfortable in a place (if it is dark, the better) and try to empty the mind (yes, I know that it is difficult when you're in the middle of hysterical, but, like everything else, is a matter of practice). Once past those two minutes (and if they are five, nothing happens), 99.9% of the time, I have a solution to the problem that was not even on the list of possible solutions. And I can not speak of the other remaining 0.1% yet because I haven’t found it.

The challenge you pose to "My name is Khan" is too big. I am sure that SRK will do well. The different performances he has made lately in his film are admirable and, from what I saw, very elaborate. Surely I can be in one of the press conferences of the Temptations and, if I can, we ask in this regard.

I'm looking at the website of Dostana. The point of the songs is not bad at all, but the files are too short to be able to comment on the matter. As may have the CDs and listen to the songs complete, I can say. The rest of the site looks very good. Long enough to see it and want it short enough so that you still want more

I said at the time, the idea seemed original and fun. I'm expecting the premiere to see it in stride (though my Hindi is still more limited than my English).

Sorry, the post is too long. Well ... so if you entertain your virus does not let you get out of bed.

Take care (please).

Sue
ps. Sorry, my English is too bad.

Dear Karan Sir,

I was deeply moved by an interview of yours today in the papers about your journey from romantic to cynic. It is sad to read that because I am watching one of your films right now KKKG.

I like to still believe in love at first sight it first happens in dusty bookshops then stems into a slap in the face but the important thing is to hang onto genuine love and not let overanalysis kill the truth.

I hope this is just a phase and we do get to see more romantic films of yours.

Love,

Hi Karan,

I hope you're feeling better by now. I have always loved your language and humor. You rock!

I disagree with others and would have to say that just having SRK and Kajol together doesn't mean a hit film. In addition, I have complete faith in your movies and think that it will be nothing less than a blockbuster. I love SRK. I absolutely adore Rani Mukherjee and wish you had chosen her instead for your new film. Or at least include her in it somehow....but not a special appearance please!

Ravi Chandran alone will do wonders for the film. The guy is a genius! Can I suggest Monty Sharma's music? He's a diamond in the rough.

That's all for now. Hopefully you write again soon.

Take it easy and stop being a stickler for diets. That's probably whats getting you sick. You only live once!

Lots of luv,

Hi Karan,
The more I read blogs of Hindi film industry celebrities, the more I like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Most of you all are very very irregular(Just like some of the movies) and no comments about RGV.

Now coming to this blog, I am glad to see that you have dropped that 'K' this time around. I am already dizzy because of 1 'K' lover Kapoor. Eagerly waiting to see SRK and Kajol together again. I hope they'll create the magic of Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, the movie very close to my heart.

Finally 1 request, please promote composers who can compose 'original' music. I hate listening to same music for songs in different languages.

Hi Karan

I hope you get well soon!

Comments on the music for Dostana - i liked 2 songs. Shut up and bounce, Desi Girl. The other songs were just ok. The songs i liked were lively and have a good dance beat. The other songs were mellow, slow, and probalby wouldn't listen to often. I'd like to get my groove on the dance floor with Shut up and bounce.!

I have to give my comments on the the following movies as well.

Kidnap - It was slightly different than any Bollywood movie I have seen before. There were some gray areas for the scene details, but I think the story detail was done pretty well. The plot wasn't a mysetery and the revenge was justified. It was a boy trying to make a point and i like the values and morals that was tied into the plot. At first i liked the clues of the game, but i think it got reallyy dragged. I found myself feeling ancy in the theatre thinking to myself ok, now when will this hide and seek game be over. I liked the story and of course Imran. However, it wasn't a "wow" movie either. I say it wasn't the typical BW movie b/c i thought at the end the 2 would hookup or end up together happily ever after, but that didn't happen. That was unexpected.

Drona - my goshhh, hopeless! Maybe i'm just not into all that sci fi "stuff" but i think indian storylines should stick to the popular love story themes, terrorism, comedy (the kind you leave your brains at home), cartoon animation, movies with a theme on disabilties like TZP etc. Though the graphics and effects was superb, it wasn't the most exciting movie. I walked up and left half way thru and so did many more people i know. It was referred to as "itni bakwass movie" at my mom's kitty. I have to agree, it was nothing to rave about. YOU LOOKED VERY APPEALING AT THE PREMIER ;)

Rock On - Absolutely hated it! The music drove me nuts. I know they're suppsoed to represent a rock band bla bla, but they played that heavy metal bang bang stuff WAYYYYY too much. It got better towards the ending, but 3/4 of the movie was just such a bore.

Not sure if i want to watch Hello or Karzz. I'll wait until i hear whether its a yay or a nay before i decide to take time out to go watch those movies. They don't look very exciting. I dunno about seeing Himesh in a movie. He's a great singer but his first movie was terrible! SSongs are great though. Tandoori Nights and Masha Allah - great songs! I can see Tandoori Nights becoming a hit.

Last good movie i can and still rave about is A Wednesday. When i walked out of the theatre i was just amazed at the story line. I loved it so much i bought the DVD. Very captivating and Nasruddin Shah at his very best always.

Can't wait to see Dostana.

Movies i will definitely watch based on the trailers

Lions of Punjab
Other end of the Line
Golmaal Returns

By the way, when will you come to Germany again. How big is the chance that you will once shoot a film in Berlin?(for example). I wish you would come with your film for the opening night to Berlin. I would love seeing you all together here in my home town.

That dear Karan was all for today until you next blog.
Take care and God bless you, your family and friends

I have been a convert to Indian films for quite a while now, and have been delighted to see a growing number of movies that tackle topics away from the standard (although quite brilliant at times) romance and drama story lines.

Your brief description of the characters in My Name is Khan has put the movie on my radar and I will eagerly be awating it.

As a tip to all involved in the production - watch Christian Clemenson portraying the character of Jerry Espensen in Boston Legal. He does a brilliant job of portraying an Asperger's sufferer on screen, and is definitely a standard to live up to. My full admiration will go to Shah Rukh if he can pull off such a demanding performance.

Fingers crossed, this could be one of those rare movies really worth waiting for...

Hey

My comments before still moderating and not sure if they posted so am commenting again.

Hope you feeling better now..

I am really looking foward to Khan even more exciting now that filmings getting closer(btw cannot belive you and ekta finally dropped the k guess you was right on kwk your horoscopes are very similar). Kajol is really good and love u me aur hum as for the characters in your film am looking foward to seeing her with srk and your subject is really interesting i know nothing about aspergers disease so be good to learn. As a director its good to see you tackle different things rather than similar subjects though i do love , love storys.

Saw the dostana trailor looks really good especially john :) too cute in it especially in the suits anyways seems different and funny so should be entertaining. Hope it does well.

Saw you in ckompany cool apperance nice to see you on screen again since DDLJ i think you are really entertaining and saw your ramp pics you looked really good. Have you seen BAH what did you think of it?

Oh don't even think that you're incapable of handling such projects! I know it's a different kind of a film and it will make a lot of people think about their point of view about Muslims.
But just remember, you got our prayers and love AND you'll work with SRK so no worries.

So, are you going to shoot in San Francisco? :)

Hi Karan,
I watched "P.S. I love you" recently and found it to be such a drag. I couldn't help thinking you would have made a better film.
Man knows about his coming death, writes series of letters to be delivered to his wife after death, telling her how to get over him.

Surely an interesting concept but one which 'P.S. I love you' failed to exploit.

I am not sure whether you watched the film, but if you did, I would like to know if you came up with a better way to make the audience empathise with its lead characters.

Just finished reading up on your blog entries since July's end and I wanted to express some encouragement to you about MNIK.

1) Everyone is really, really, really looking forward to this film. SRK-Kajol fans are looking forward to this film for all of the obvious reasons. The Media is also looking forward to it for that reason and the fact that this is a completely different type of film for you. So, no pressure. (J/K)

2) The script (though I haven't read it) has led to many rumors on stating that the film is about autism, its about terrorism, SRK plays a lobbyist being kidnapped by terrorists, SRK is autistic and gets kidnapped, etc. So many rumors floating around that I don't know which is fact and which is pure fiction. The one rumor that clinches the film for me (and I hope its true) is that its based on a true story.

3) The feel of the film is purely dramatic and a much serious tone than you are normally used to directing. Makes me want to watch the film even more upon release. It will be something completely new for you. We are all nervous when it comes to change, yet its inevitable. There is no escaping it. Two things in this world are certain. Death & Change. Deal with it. Accept it & move on. Moving on is the core of change, no?

4) SRK-Kajol - they will be seen in serious roles in their careers for the first time together instead of the usual melodramatic romantic/ family wah wah cry baby type of films. I apologize for my blunt remark, but I don't have a talent for sugar coating the truth. We all feel that Kajol is a genius of an artiste and the other females can learn a thing or two from her. We've seen Kajol in serious roles off and on throughout her career (Dushman was stupendous), but SRK stopped pretty much after KHKN and didn't do a semi-serious role until Swades & now recently CDI. Which is probably why detractors in the Media think he can't act. Well, they say the same thing about Keanu Reeves, but nobody else could be a better surfer dude (Bill & Ted...) or messiah (Matrix trilogy). I still can't picture a better Buddha other than Reeves.

Getting back to MNIK, my advice is to channel that nervousness into excitement. You shouldn't be doubting yourself and saying "What the f---, I'm gonna totally screw this up. S---!" What you should be doing is getting excited and telling yourself "Oh boy! I can't wait to start. This is going to be so damn awesome!!! I can totally feel it. Heck, I'm getting goosebumps just contemplating the start of filming. Woo-hoo!!!!" THAT should be your attitude. One filled with positivity. 100% energy, hyped up and driven to the point of being on a "natural" high.

So, please don't be so self-deprecating! Be the energy drive that others around you will feed off of (in a good way - no psychic vampire crap - trust me, if you don't know about it, you don't want to). Be the guiding light. Be the inspiration. And for Earth's sake stop being so depressed all the time. We only have one conscious life. After that, its back to the drawing board.

As for the viral. Of course its in the air. That's what a viral is. However, you only need one person to catch it and pass it along to everyone else.

Well, here's hoping you get better and if you feel upto it, try my concoction.

one cup of milk
add in bits of saffron, crushed cardammon, cloves & fennel
boil in a pan until the milk starts to rise
pour into cup
add a tablespoon of honey
stir and drink, eat all of the contents as well

Works for me EVERYTIME when I get sick. Much better than that green tea crap!

hello KJo,

My name is AMI. (Aspiring Moviemaker of India)

I have many words to say that I am a great fan of yours since the times of DDLJ. Believe me, when I saw Kuch Kuch Hota Hai I didn't know that you were the director but when I got to see you I recognized you in just a minute that this is the same guy who played one of Shahrukh's friends in DDLJ.

But I am a grerater fan of SRK. I just love Shahrukh Khan and so I have seen all your films right from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (your direction) to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (your direction) to Kal Ho Naa Ho (your script) to Kabhie Alvidaa Na Kehna (your direction) and I am eagerly waiting for MY NAME IS KHAN.

Hummmm the story does not end here. I am also a big fan of Kajol. I just love her. Shahrukh is my first love as far as the male actors are concerned but the case is not the same with Kajol as my first love is Sridevi as far as the female actors are concerned. And that is why I am dying to watch the SHAHRUKH-KAJOL Pair again on the celluloid after so many years after K3G. That was a SUPERCOOL TREAT by you and I am sure with MY NAME IS KHAN it is going to be an EXTRAVAGANZA.

Hey Karan, I have come to know that you are going to start shooting for MY NAME IS KHAN from December this year. I wish I were a part of the film (As an Assistant Director of KARAN JOHAR). I really want to be a part of your team (Dharma Productions) with my Scripts and Storylines to create the same magic that you have been creating for years.

So, ALL THE VERY BEST for MY NAME IS KHAN. But hey, this means that I am not going to see KOFFEE WITH KARAN for next many months. I guess until the release of MY NAME IS KHAN which is going to be a long wait as I am already missing your show very much as it is a show which refreshes the mind in a fantastic manner and specially the rapid fire which makes someone a koffee hamper winner. Please do start the SEASON 3 of KWK as soon as possible.

And now KJo, THIS IS A VERY HUMBLE REQUEST. "PLEASE REPLY ME AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE YOU START SHOOTING FOR my name is khan". I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY. Because I will be OBLIGED only when you will allow me to direct a film under DHARMA PRODUCTIONS.

love & FILMS,

AMI (Aspiring Moviemaker of India)

Heyyy Karan,
Hope you are feeling better by now and enjoying the time in the US! I really appreciate that you are blogging, because you have a busy schedule!
I am really a huuuuge fan of yours!!You are truely one of the BEST directors of india!! I have seen all your films I don’t know how many times. KKHH was the first film which I watched in cinema!I still remember ever bit of that day!K3G was such a wonderful film!! I cried like a baby!“Suraj hua…” is my all time favourite romantic song. KHNH is very special to me, because I did a presentation of its music in school (and got good marks) and I have watched it with my classmates in school. And all girls were sitting and crying! That was fun! KANK was a great film, too!! Even though some people didn’t like it I think it’s one of your best films, because the subject was really interesting!! I am sure MNIK will be a great success!! you will handle this complex subject perfectly!! So don’t worry about it!!! I am anxious to see how you will direct and shahrukh will act in this film!!! But there is one thing I want to say about MNIK. It’s really sad that you don’t want to stick to your trademark “K” anymore.“K” is a nice alphabet, because our names start with it, isn’t it?! You should use that further.
you just make the perfect bollywoodfilms, because you have the best cast, the best music, great locations and most important your films make me laugh and cry!
You’re also a fantastic host!! Be it KwK or award shows! I have watched EVERY episode of KwK and loved it! I am really missing it! The way you handled your guests was just amazing and I love your sense of humour!!
Then you are a brilliant costume designer!! The best example for it is OSO! I just love that pink dress of Deepika on the red carpet! The only thing that is missing in your biography is being a judge on a reality show. Will that ever happen? What do you think of reality shows? Do you follow a few?
Anyways, just keep doing good work and entertain all of us!
And I hope you will come back to Hamburg for MNIK’s premiere. Strangely, I didn’t get any informations last time when you were in Hamburg for KANK. The same happened when SRK (I am a die-hard fan of his) in Hamburg. Whatever! I am sure and wish that one day I meet you and SRK ! Say hello to him!
With lots of Love from GERMANY- Komal (19)
p.s. The music of Dostana is fantastic! I love desi girl! Will you promote this film along with the cast on reality shows?

Karanji,

Hello! I hope you are now in good health! My name is Cat and I'm not an Indian, I'm an American film maker but I'm a huge Bollywood fan and hope to one day make my own Bollywood film! A friend from Mumbai introduced me to Bollywood four years ago, if I'm remembering correctly, and the first film that I saw was K3G! I have been hooked on your films and the industries films ever since! I live in Massachusetts, (Boston), and the days have grown cold due to Autumn arriving and I have been shooting out of doors. I must say that I hate the cold but that is New England weather for you. I wanted to comment on your blog because it has been a pleasure reading your thoughts! I also truly appreciate the honesty in your writings! There was something you mentioned in your blog that surprised me and encouraged me! You stated: "To say I'm nervous is still understating my state of mind because there are some moments in the day where I do feel extremely incapable of handling this complex film". - Thank you for writing that! You have been so successful with your films and I consider you to be a seasoned Director and yet you feel this! I'm Producing and Directing my first feature film entitled "Pursuit" and I do also have days where I feel I can't carry the load of making a film anymore but at the same time I have to stand up to the challenge because I feel it, (like a beast within that must get out), I feel my film must be completed. But even you admit to feeling this way, which is very human! Thank you for being humble enough to state that! Producing and Directing is very hard work but you do it well and I hope to be able to do the same! No matter what our background or culture there are things that connect us regardless. Thank you for sharing your feelings! It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one who feels this way! Thank you for this blog!

Dear sir, I am sending a story. Let me know if you find it interesting
===========================================================
Opening sequence: 1. A busy market of Mumbai. Typical middle class men and women interacting with each other. 2. An hospital: Doctors rushing for treating emergency cases of accident 3. A school trip: A school bus carrying kids waiting at railway junction for railway to cross 4. Inside railway, passengers playing cards.
These 4 scenes, one after another with increasing speed, so much so that they overlap on each other and BOOM! 4 bomb blasts killing XX people.
Blood bath, emergency, news channels, pictures of dead bodies etc.
A train station in Mumbai, people calling their relatives to know their whereabouts. BOOM! 5th bomb blast, 10 minutes after first 4.
----------
A young guy, named as Fahar(Abhishek Bachhan) living with his parents in an extremely poor and backward Muslim mohalla. Fahar is shocked with bomb blasts and feels disturbed. Fahar goes to Madarasaah everyday to teach Kuran and is very knowledgible about the religion. His mother falls sick and he needs money for her medical treatment. A maulavi(Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah) named as Zulfikar helps him in this treatment. Zulfikar who is actually known as "Shekh Sahab" becomes a father figure for Fahar. Fahar becomes an ardent follower of Shekh Sahab so much so that he leaves his job and starts accompaning Shekh Sahab everywhere. Shekh Sahab starts brainwashing him slowly. Fahar starts becoming extremist and decides to oversee arrival of RDX consignment by leaving his parents behind. His mother dies when he is away busy downloading RDX from ships. He plans a bigger dhamaka in Mumbai and starts brainwashing his friends from the mohalla.
Sikandar moves to the same locality. He is a hakeem and decides to open a clinic in this locality. Slowly Sikandar becomes popular and becomes Sikandar Bhai. Sikandar treats all types of people and that causes an issue for Fahar. According to him, Sikandar should not treat non muslims. Fahar sends a letter to Sikandar bhai requesting him to consider. Sikandar bhai sends a great reply in response. Fahar decides to terrorize Sikandar and plans to do so. Before really attacking Sikandar bhai's clinic and house, Fahar comes to know about Sikandar bhai's past and he gets scared. Fahar and Sikandar bhai meets face to face several times and exchange some verbal comments. Sikandar bhai is actually Gandhi under the hood of terror. He starts becoming a Messiah of people in the mohalla and people start listening to him more and more. Fahar feels uncomfortable and decides to meet Sikandar face to face. A great sequence of one to one meeting follows where both of them justify their stands. Fahar tells about the plight of muslims while Sikandar bhai tells that the sorrows are univeral and there are no religious boundaries. In the end Fahar gives up because he can not win over arguments from Sikandar bhai. Fahar tells Sikandar bhai to move out of the area and stop making people non religious. Sikandar bhai gives an eye for an eye and holds on to himself without any fear.

Sikandar bhai has a daughter who helps her in his clinic and Fahar gets attracted to her.

Sikandar bhai comes to know about Fahar's plan of another round of bomb blasts. He conforts Fahar and warns him not to do. Fahar doesnt pay attention because he thinks he is doing a great service to his religion. Sikandar bhai dares him to do bomb blasts. Fahar accepts the challenge. Sikandar bhai organizes a Eid get together and gives a great speech about religion, humanity etc. Here Fahar identifies the men for the job, places to plant the bombs etc. his preparation is in full swing. Sikandar bhai decides to face Fahar on his own rather than informing police (WHY? need to incorporate some solid reasons for the same). Fahar decides the day, his friends plant the bombs at various locations. They keep waiting for Fahar's orders to trigger the bomb blast. Fahar orders but nothing happens. Fahar tries to contact his friends but none of them are reachable. Fahar becomes panic and extremely angry. He visits the sites and finds that the bombs are never planted. He gets angry, extremely frustrated with his defeat he decides to meet Sikandar bhai. As soon as he reaches Sikandar bhai's home, he gets shocked to see all his friends, the "Mujaheedeens" are following Sikandar bhai's orders. A great exchange of words between Fahar and Sikandar bhai follows. Fahar tries to attack Sikandar bhai but Fahar's friends are ready to protect Sikandar bhai at any cost. Finally, Sikandar's daughter kills Fahar and tells the people of that mohalla to get rid of terrorism, of terrorists, of hatred etc. Sikandar bhai cries and gives the last speech. Story ends. The closing sequence can be similar to opening sequence where 5 different locations are shown one after another but no bomb blasts happen.

Let me know if you find this interesting at all. There are several loopholes but I tried to communicate the concise version of the story.

Dear Mr. Karan,
How sweet seeing you still write here despite your busy mind! Your honesty is also admirable because you are a great director and nobody could imagine your anxiety!
I pray for your success not only in India, but also around the world. I confess that I don't like some exaggerations in Indian movies plots and I think your best movie that has least exaggeration was K3G. Almost all of them were beautiful but K3G was perfect and I think most people agree that. SO PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THE STORY! because I think this movie should belong to many people from different countries with different cultures and customs.
Again wish you the best making this great movie.

this is the longer version of my comment...
HeyyKaran,

Hope you are feeling better by now and enjoying the time in the US!
I really appreciate that you're blogging, because you have a busy schedule!
I am really a huuuuge fan of yours!! You are truely one of the BEST directors of india!! I have seen all your films I don’t know how many times. I have stopped counting. And I just love it that SRK is always a part of your films!
KKHH was the first film which I watched in cinema! And I can never forget that experience!! I still remember ever bit of that day!
And I have no words for K3G. Such a wonderful film with a beautiful topic!! I cried like a baby! And “Suraj hua Madam” is my all time favourite romantic song.
KHNH is very special to me, because I did a presentation of its music in school (and got good marks) and I have watched it with all my classmates and my classteacher in school. And all girls were sitting and crying! That was fun!
KANK was a great film, too!! Even though some people didn’t like I think it’s one of your best films, because the subject was really interesting!!
I am sure MNIK will be a great success!! you will handle this complex subject perfectly!! So don’t worry about it!!! I am anxious to see how you will direct and shahrukh will act in this film!!! You will show your critics that you don’t make “over the top” films. But there is one thing I want to say about MNIK. In my opinion it’s really sad that you don’t want to stick to your trademark K anymore. You should use that further even though you might don’t believe in it as a superstition anymore. K is a nice alphabet, because our names start with it, isn’t it?!
To sum up you make the perfect bollywoodfilms, because you have the best cast, the best music, great locations and most important your films make me laugh and cry! If I have to select my favourite film, all your movies would come first!

Besides being a great director and producer you’re a fantastic host!! Be it KwK or award shows! You are truly the best! I just loved KwK! I have watched EVERY episode! I am really missing it! The way you handled your guests was just amazing and I love your sense of humour!! Farah, SRK and you make a great team! And like you, I just love everything about bollywood. The gossips, glamour, music, films, making of, who is seeing who, fights, interviews etc. It’s my hobby! My parents always tease me by saying: Komal, if you give 10 percent of the attention which you give to bollywood to your studies, you would be the best student in class!

Then of course you are a brilliant costume designer!! The best example for it is OSO!I just love that pink dress of Deepika on the red carpet! And you are a style icon on your own! There has been a great progress. From the healthy cute looking guy of DDLJ to the sexy handsome man, who is walking the ramp for e.g. Rohit Bal. hats off!

The only thing that is missing in your biography is being a judge on a reality show. Will that ever happen? What do you think of reality shows? Do you follow a few?

Anyways, just keep doing good work and entertain all of us!

And I hope you will come back to Hamburg for the premiere of MNIK. Strangely, I didn’t get any informations last time that you were in Hamburg for KANK. I was a bit sad, that I missed the opportunity to meet you. The same happened when SRK (I am a die-hard fan of his) was he was in Hamburg. Whatever! I am sure and wish that one day I meet you and SRK ! Say hello to him!

I’ll keep on writing comments on your blog!
With lots of Love from Germany

p.s.The music of Dostana is fantastic! I love desi girl! Will you promote this film along with the cast on reality shows?

i dont like media's attack on shahrukh that akshay is the new king aamir is the perfectionist...they are v.good but shahrukh is the best...
you know the difference betweeen shahrukh and aamir....shahrukh plays a role naturally...as shahrukh would be the character and aamir, he goes into the character and acts the character....thats why aamir may be called mr. perfectionist, shahrukh is the natural actor and of course the best.
enough about shahrukh now it is your turn....hey u rthe best director, anchor, host and the most diplomatic man in industry.....
hey tell me one thing please you are teaching these industry boys(as you have mentioned) film direction...do you give such an opportunity to outsiders..i mean common guys and girls who deserve....
i loved you in kofee with karan...and every episodes which features shahrukh...you and shahrukh are the best entertainers in film industry, no doubts at all........
dostana seems a good movie hope it does well on box office...
best of luck 4 all your upcoming films...

Hey Karan,
This is monisha again. i just saw the do the dostana dance challenge thing on your website. i got all happy for a moment then i read the terms and conditions and it said it was only open for those living in india which mad me sad. i think if you make films for a world wide audeince you should have contest made for world wide audience too. i now that it would be difficult to do to open this particular contest for a world wide audience but could have an alternative contest for those living outside of india. Don't get me wrong,it is nothing personal i love you, your films, your sense of humor and basically everything that has to do with you. and by the way do feel bad it is not just you but everyone who has contest to promo thier film do it mainly in india just like the karz contest and the golmaal returns contest. you should maybe consider having an alternitive contest for those abroad but if you don't it is okay just keep it mind for your next films

Anyways best of luck with dostana i will be sure to watch it the week it releases and the promos look mindblowing.
best of luck
Love

I'm sorry in advance for my comment being off-top the subject of this topic, but unfortunately you don’t have a topic of KANK here, on your blog. Why is that so, Karan? You have placed so much of your efforts, strengths, and your talent in this film; I believe it is the best of your films so far. Why do you keep silence about it? If I have the correct information, India has not accepted this film very well and you have received a lot of critics for it. Maybe it is time to hear “the other side”? Maybe you wouldn’t mind to give us an opportunity to speak, us – those who has understood, accepted and loved your film?
We have a web-site dedicated to Indian cinema, it joins people from all over the Russia, Ukraine and other former USSR republics. This site has been created by very young people purely based on their love to Indian cinema. We talk, discuss new movies and even (don’t laugh) make some sort of reviews to them. I’d like to introduce to you my opinion about the KANK. On our site it has a big tag “review”, but I don’t insist on it. It is simply my opinion, formed under the emotion influence, generated by your masterpiece.
P.S. If you would just know, Karan, how many heart you’ve touched all over the former USSR, who much joy you’ve given birth to, I think you would live everything behind and came to us to get the appreciation you’ve deserved, and we would treat you like a victorious!
Hope you’ll have a minute to read this:…
…I like oll the Karan Johar’s films, but KANK one is one of the best, in my opinion. The movie is done very qualitatively, if I can put it this way. Disregarding to the fact that the plot is quite trivial, movie hasn’t gone boring at all. It has a lot of wit and humor in it. Adding perfect acting, operator and sound directing, costumes (should be mentioned here as Shahrukh have never looked as good as here), picture directing (color gamma of the movie is amazing, so as sets choice), music and lyrics, choreography… – well, I have no other word than “EXCELENT”!
Now about the plot. It is as simple as life itself, and as complicates as people’s relationships. The keynote of the movie is not a cheating itself, but feelings and emotions that goes with characters involved. The movie is not about cheating (but about it also), but about love. The characters cannot stand against this feeling, they are crushed by it. Their lives are falling apart, old relations are breaking, but still during the whole movie there is a sense of them being right… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to justify marriage treason. I am married myself and I’ve lived though the marriage treason – I know what I’m talking about. But still I can say that love, true love, not some small intrigue, is always right as it is. Amitabh’s character said that “It comes as a death and nobody can resist it”.
Dev. As for me – very bright and attractive character. Slightly egoistic and quick-tempered, but he has a soul. He feels when he is wrong; he fixes or tries to fix his mistakes. His passionate nature, ability to love, self-criticism – that what makes Dev’ character so adorable.
Riya. Beautiful. Strong. Successful. Very ambitious and goal-oriented. Women like her usually have good careers. They are used to get what they want, as they have everything to get it. Riya got married to man as handsome and successful as she is: Dev is a football star, good looking, with the strong personality – best of the best! It could have not been any other way – Riya has to have all the best. You cannot say that this marriage means nothing to her, but still the career is her first priority. In the beginning of the movie you get a feeling that she exists in this marriage with Dev by herself. She does not use “we”, she says “me” and “you”. An accident threw Dev out of the world of rich and successful people, he was left one-to-one with his problems, ‘cause Riya has moved on, rarely noticing her husband and a child. And it’s like she actually has a reason – she is the one who is supporting a family...
Rishi. Not bad, not bad at all. A very good person. A perfect husband. Seem like he has it all. But he didn’t touch anything in me, maybe, same as he didn’t touch Maya. And it’s not his fault. Frankly speaking, I get very bored with those “perfect husbands” (maybe, ‘cause mine is far from being perfect)? He couldn’t “awake” Maya, she was marrying him having some tender feelings for him and hoping to love him one day… He doesn’t really love his wife, he loves his love to her. He doesn’t care about her worrying, her feelings. When she asked him about what if she will get an affair he had laughed in her face. This is not a treatment husband in love (as he claims) should give to his wife – to hurt being unaware of this...
Maya. Sweet, extremely tender and sexy. Got married to a wrong guy and has to pay for this compromise. She is trying to replace emotions with constant clean-ups and work. And then comes Dev, the hurricane. He sees her, he touches her, and there’s a passion in every his touch and move. He gave her new experiences, he opened a “new Maya” in her, the one she never knew.
The difference between Dev and Rishi is that Rishi has always given Maya himself, but Dev gave Maya HERSELF. Those two has found in each other everything they were looking in life. Not in his wife but in Maya Dev has found a compassion and support he needed so desperately. Remember, on the street he, the man, gives Maya his bag, ‘cause his wounded leg hurts and it’s difficult for him to walk… If it would have been Riya beside him that moment – he would’ve not done it ever… And his confession in the rain scene “I’m scared, Maya!”…
Riya was not lying saying she loves Dev. She loves him. It’s just that priorities between Dev and her job are set not towards Dev’s benefit. And more. It is very difficult for her to communicate with her husband. She believes that his angry way of communication is an expression of his rage, and she doesn’t see that he is simply hurt and scared, ‘cause he can’t fill as “old Dev” – the king of the football and the master of life. She goes away from talking to him, leaving his husband one-to-one with his pain, or even worse – she hits him hard at the most vulnerable spots… She is disappointed by Dev: his career is ruined and, even though she doesn’t mentions this before, she believes Dev is a loser. She is upset with his – often, he’s being rude to her. Sometimes his aggression is an expression of his pain. And Shahrukh plays it so well: in his eyes you can see a scream Riya doesn’t hear, cannot hear…
Amitabh’s character is very good. All the close-ups are amazing: wise eyes, endless kindness and understanding in the eyes. Only Amitabh can play like this…
Movie is very musical and very beautiful. A lot of erotica in it too. And I’m not talking about that hotel scene (even though it is very beautiful: two arms, each – with a wedding ring). Amitabh bring a lot of erotica to the screen, Shahrukh does, Rani does. Only Abhishek and Preity are pretty inert in this respect for the whole movie, even though they are very beautiful. Very good director’s decision. He doesn’t give these characters to show their sex appeal, making accent on the other characters. Only then when their characters feel themselves happy, being loved by their partners, their physical attraction side opens widely and brightly. How they dance on that party, how much fire! (Karan Johar reopens secret revealed long time ago: we open ourselves emotionally, when we love and being loved). But the strongest scene in the movie, in my opinion, is the rain scene, when Dev tells Maya he cannot bare this situation anymore:
- You are mine, Maya!
- Yes!
- You are mine!
Such incredible passion, so much desire in their eyes and moves, that it is almost impossible to believe how strong their love is. In my opinion it is the best episode… Still, I also want to mention this one: Riya and Maya are walking to Dev. He is standing with the flowers and you can see how his face changes… Brilliantly played!
Movie is mastefully done. Every episode, every dialog, every phrase, every move or sight has such a colossal conceptual meaning. And still the director does not impose his opinion upon the situation; he only gives us the characters’ world, those characters he loves very much. The conclusions are up to the viewers. Screenplay is thought through to the smallest details. Very beautiful city shooting. A lot of directors new findings.
Watch this movie, enjoy the shades, listen to the music. Generally, we need a lot of this type of movies. Amazing!
Tanya.From Russia with love.

Karan,

Hope you get well soon. Once you do, can you please read through most of the reaction for Roadside Romeo as prep for Tarun's KKHH? A lot of complaints seem to be about the lack of novelty in the script and the over-doing of movie-spoofs. Also, I have heard that they lip-movement of the characters is not really in sync with the dialogues. That probably came up from the fact that the Walt Disney animation team couldn't comprehend hindi and mumbaiyya. So, could you make sure KKHH covers these mistakes up? It is one of the greatest movies in hindi cinema in recent times, and we do not want it spoilt.

Thanks,
BaLa.

Sorry dear Tanya but I don't agree you!
You criticism was perfect and beautiful but I think you may didn't notice some points which it is a good idea to think about it.
I can't deny this movie was far more specific than the other movies directed by Mr. Karan but it has some weaknesses which may bother anyone who understand the real meaning of loyalty and responsibility in marriage. Even if we accept that Dev felt a huge lack of love in his life and as a man does not have enough perseverance to overcome his problem and awaken his ambitious wife, we can not find a good reason for Maya to (physically and spiritually) betray her husband.
Even in a very similar movie "Falling In Love" performed by Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, for the matter of love between them, you can find a way to convince yourself. It is interesting to see despite their strong desire, she couldn't make love with man and if you see the movie you can not even compare Rishi and Meryl's husband in that movie!
Rishi had a childish nature, it was the only weakness he had, he was lovely, alive and loved Maya (even more than himself) . you can see that love even 3 years after their divorce when Maya kept his face in her hands and cried.
Even in the end of the movie, before separation of the couples you can see conspicuous regret in Riya's face and a great change in her behavior which Dev didn't accept it.
Let's think twice! if some one other than Shahrukh khan had performed this role, did we accept it easily?!
... I don't want to continue describing the scenes of KANK and my reviews! Of course it was well-made and the songs were perfect but something was missing....

Hi Karan,

Nice to see Dostana's opening song in now on the air...Bounce...shut up and bounce......tune is very catchy...for sure Shilpa looks hot.

Farah Khan is the judge on Nache Baliye 4..I hope you will be there to promote Dostana.

Badly need to see more promos as we are all so excited with less then three weeks to go for thre release date.

Reality shows are a good way to promote movies and their caste.

Oh before I forget a Happy Diwali to everyone at Dharma ...

Hi Karan!
Since you have no specified place in your blog for those who wants to share his/her opinion about your movies, I'd like to do it here.
I have read a lot of semi-positive and negative reviews about KANK and came up with a sort of an answer to all those who fell themselves as critics…
The essay about why shouldn’t you watch KANK
Why shouldn’t we watch it? - you’ll tell me, - it seem to be a big starrer, the director has already came up with a couple of nice light-hearted movies, Manhattan’s shooting – it should be something huge! I should see it, to please my curiosity…
That is exactly why you should not watch it! Don’t point you finger with popcorn fat on it to the screen “Oh, sex in the Indian movie!”, don’t get critical about “Ha, I would do the ending differently, with moral…” – don’t you dare to touch this movie, it’s alive, it will be hurt!
This is a movie about a pain. A pain of a man who has undone his own hopes and expectations, hopes of his family – and it hurts him more than a physical pain. His attempts to raise his son as a strong person distance them apart, his desire to find understanding within his own family distance them even more. It a film of a woman’s pain – she doesn’t know her son, she doesn’t recognize her husband – and she hides from all this behind the career, success, glamour.
This is a movie of another man’s pain – he can give up his life for his beloved, but he cannot divide his love to part and share one part with her so she could love him back. This is a movie about a woman who cannot give her friend what he wants the most – a wife, she cannot hive her husband what she wants the most – a child.
Elder man’s pain – he has joined as a married couple two beloved but not loving each other children. Elder woman’s pain – she has raised a champion who is too independent to rely on her trust on him when he has lost his own self-confidence.
And this is only their first pain, the one they enter the film with. Their families are like crystal vases with a flaw – one day they will collide and break to many small pieces, many small mirrors. The mirror has two sides – some will see the reflection of new hopes, new beginnings, new happiness. Others will see… other happiness, forbidden, so personal, so secret. They will go dancing in reflection of newly found themselves; they will keep spinning and spinning …
And then small pieces will fall down. It’s said that watching broken mirror brings bad luck. Those pieces will heart everybody around, they’ll bring a lot of pain to their wounded souls, they’ll open forbidden conversation topics, will make them to see themselves differently.
Some will find strength to keep living happily, to look for a new love, to discover a mother within… Some will find strength to live unhappily, with only thought of other’s happiness.
This world is not that cruel. If it is not a happy-end – it’s not the end yet. One day everything will come to the order, somebody’s happiness will spread some light to those who got lost in the sorrow shadows.
Don’t you watch this movie if you have nothing to do for the next 3 hours. This movie is a pray for the soul and you should come to it with an open mind and heart – and you will get your forgiveness. And don’t tell me you have nothing to be forgiven for and won’t need the forgiveness ever. If you think so – you just haven’t seen this movie yet!

P.S. To RX - have you ever considered a reason "she has fallen in love"? Both of the characters have broken their initial relationships not because something was wrong in their respective families – that was the reason to start looking for a friend, for a support. They did so because they have fallen in love and felt it to be wrong to continue living in lie.

Hey..it was nice to see your interview on 10yrs of Kuck Kuch Hota Hain. True ..somethings in the movie looked so stupid like the letter. Even the concept of someone still being in love even after 8-9 yrs. Though my personal exp has proved that its very much possible.

Bt how come you are always so filmy in themes. How come it always becomes Rahul, Anjali and Tina and no Anjali, Tina and Akbar or Antony... or a Sita and Geetha with Akbar and Sita and Antony and Geetha. Is it that the theme would not be accepted or you feel it is no there in society ???

Hi Karan,

I hope you are recovering and doing well . I was watching the 10ears of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai on TV. It was really nice to see all of you talk about the entire experience of making one of the biggest blockbuster films of the times. It is the journey that becomes timeless and it was very evident how closely you have guarded each and every small detail of the film including the sofa colour on which you narrated the film to SRK.The movie is very dear to you just as the first baby.I am a movie buff myself and a Media Trainee. I'm pursuing my Masters In Mass Communication specialising in Audio Visual Productions from Symbiosis Institute Of Mass Communication(SIMC), Pune.I'm also involved in one of the first mega-event in my life till date....Footprints Bangalore.

I have always been a big fan of your's & I really don't know how this will matter to you. But, to put it straight it would be really great if you could come and address the gathering at Footprints Bangalore on Nov30th in Bangalore. Footprints is is a national media seminar, organized, managed and conducted by the junior media trainees of SIMC, encompassing the various aspects of the media relating to Advertising, Audio Visual, Journalism and Public Relations. It's a congregation of visionaries and distinguished faces from the media who come and interact with thousands of educated young people from all across the nation.

As far as Film Making is concerned the one and only name I could probably come across has been your's. The audience mainly teenagers who are young media enthusiasts would be more than pleased to have you as the speaker for the event. The theme is Digital Film Making.

It would be very kind of you to please come and be a part of our event and help us in making it a great success.Anxiously waiting to hear from you soon.
Please help me in my first endeavour and let me remember this 10years later as a fond journey just as you do.

Dear Karan Johar,

Congratulations! Dostana music is marvellous. We have been listening to it again and again, ever since the disc was out. I must say, with wonderful music in all your movies - Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khush Kabhi Gam, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kaal and last but not the least, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, you join the league of the legends like Raj Kapoor, Mehboob Khan and V. Shantaram, who were not only great director-producers but also the greatest lovers of music. Their every movie was a great musical hit. So are yours. Please keep it up, as there is no pleasure greater than to listen to lilting music of the super musicals of the Hindi cinema. With you kind permission, I would like to reproduce here my latest blog on the subject of music:

Magic Of Music!

From Kashmir to Kanya Kumari and Maharashtra to Meghalaya, we are a nation of music lovers who can drown all our differences of cast and creed, political and provincial, communal and cultural, and live together as one people, playing or listening to the same music. Whether it was the verse of sufis and saints, or the melody of Lata Mungeshkar or the folk-lore of Ila Arun, or Indi-pop of Daler Mehndi, music has been the biggest binding force for all times. Music has also helped bring together India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, even in the most tense and troubled times of their relationship. Many in India did not go to sleep without listening to Mehdi Hussan or Ghulam Ali of Pakistan and it was left to Runa Laila of Bangladesh to bring out the best of “Jhoole Lal”. Reshma always remained a rage in India whenever she came from Pakistan to perform here and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, from Pakistan, produced one of his best albums in India. And of course, melody queen Lata Mungeshkar has always remained a household name in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The list goes on and on. Music is something that is essential to our living. Not something ornamental, not only something enjoyable, not only something exciting, but something essential as a unifying force in the terrible conflicts that we live in and to live daily with so many horrible things that happen.

Lately the magic of Bollywood music has cast its spell crossing all boundaries and nationalities. As a rule connoisseurs of Latino and Spanish music might not enjoy Hindi film music. That is till you meet Leonard, Stella and Paola of Ecstacy, a three-piece band from Columbia. “We love the Bollywood music. Kajarare kajarare, Dhoom macha le and Bidi jalaile… We can’t pronounce the words correctly but we love the melody and rhythm,” smiles Leonard while Stella explains the nuances. Their liking for Hindi music shows in their performances too when the band incorporated these fast-paced numbers while singing Spanish numbers during their tour to India.. In U.K., USA , Middle East and South Africa especially, some of the biggest chart-busters include Indi-pop and hit songs from Bollywood movies. Unimaginable at one time, some of the most successful movies from Hollywood, released in recent years, seem inspired by Bollywood musicals.

Indian film music lovers have always appreciated and applauded the haunting evergreen pieces of music of the great masters. Some composers with their unique distinguishing features in their styles have left an indelible impression on our minds. Since music has always been an integral part of Indian cinema, particularly Hindi films, composers of the past to the present give it their all as they compose songs to cater to the demands of innumerable listeners across the country or make tailor-made numbers to suit the situational settings in films. From Alam Ara, the first Indian talkie, to the current releases, Hindi film music has produced thousands of unforgettable hit songs, an endless stream of singers, composers and lyricists and more than its share of super hits of Hindi cinema. The Indian cinema has elevated the song-and-dance sequences to a rare art form. Film songs serve a variety of purposes. Studded at judicious intervals all through the story, they can make a more telling statement than mere dialogue; they can be both entertaining and illuminating; they can, of course, leaven an otherwise flat story with spice and color.

With regards and best wishes,

Tilak Rishi (USA)

I’m sorry this post will be off-topic but you simply have no place on your site to express my thoughts about KANK – so I shall post it here.

Hi Karan and congratulations for

1. the longest cold there has ever been and
2. one month without one written word

I don't like the Dostana-Soundtrack very much. Typical Vishal/Shekar-Work, something that might give you some good moments in a disco but nothing you will remember the next morning. But maybe this is the kind of music that fits a comedy like Dostana. We will see.

I am wondering how the failure of "Roadside Romeo" will affect "Kuchie Kuchie....". I thought that the Promos of "RR" were very nice and was amazed that there seems to be no market for animated movies (see last years "Hanuman Returns"). And I really fear that an animated doggy-version of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is also not welcomed by the audience. But we will see that, too.

So. Let's see, how long this cold will last...

Hi Karan,

Looks like this is another attempt of urs to get praise...u even mentioned this in ur first blog, "Blog Praise". Ya....its tough isnt it? To think of new ways of not writing....bcoz it is difficult to write....to interact wid people who actually r waiting to hear from u.

I am sure there will be blog when Dostana releases...part of a publicity at what DHarma production is happening, announcement of new film, sound track release......

Its strange actually, u try to percieve people's likings in ur movies yet can be so fickle...u can be seen at every page 3 party, but still no time for ur fans.

You never know u might need them also in future!!

hye... this is the first time i read your blog infact only viral statistics.. well as per my observation i see you are more of a friend than a director or producer while writting about your friends who happen to be in the same proffession.. a traitwhich can affect both ways negative and positive...

my name is khan seems to be a very good script but your main challenge seems to be in executing the script in the same tempo and language it is written... i am a total shah rukh khan lover but i always believe in one thing it is the character in the script which picks its actor not the star who picks his character... shah rukh seems the perfect choice... good decision as a director in you.... i jus hope while you make my name is khan you be the director to the character and not the friend to your actor.. cheers!

I totally agree with your opinions Oksana, but let me add some more pains to what you have mentioned.
The main pain started with a decision of a successful man and woman for marriage... the man knows he doesn't LOVE woman but he continued in this way... as many people think and do! Five years later a new pain begins ... a beautiful young woman who give up to get marry with a man who like him as his brother or friend but decide to continue in this way just like many people think and do!
All the pains are connected like chains...and the story begins...
At the end of the movie one more IMPORTANT pain is added to all this: a little boy pain.. who accepted his father didn't love him and will not! Despite his lovely painful attempts to keep his parents together they separated and he remains again with a huge pain and this could be a new beginning for a new painful story. His father could stand on his devotions for his son and support him, but he didn't.
As many people should do but they don't!!
This is a bitter custom now, but we used to forget: "Do not marry someone you need to live with, just marry someone you can not live WITHOUT." and "You are brave if you support the people in need not just yourself".

wait karan can i just say about tanyas post, ITS WRONG!! you dont have to accept this comment :P! okay i am not someone who is always trying to be politically correct AT ALL but i found this movie LAMEEE. not because its not traditional but because COME ON the characters were soo unrelatable. even shahrukh couldn't make me like dev! he was WAYYY too selfish, true love is selfLESS. what was wrong with devs life anyway? he has a beautiful wife & an adorable kid! oh yeah lets not forget the awesome mom! his problem is that his wife is starting to outshine him or wear the pants of the family, WHAT AN EGO MANIAC! he is so insecure, he cannot be happy for his wife, he is too busy feeling jealous. & maya..maya maya maya. rani is not good at alllll in romantic roles, like when shes complaining you just wanna throw something at her like SHUT UP SHUT UP. she acts just like she did iin black when the girl was blind LOL just kidding, in black she was simply AMAZING but like i said in romantic roles she is not that great. anyways besides the acting, what was wrong with maya's life? yeah her husband is childish, but what does she do to fix it? cleans the house, goes off with other men in hotel rooms, etc. also she just shouldn't have married him, i mean she had the "love" of her life right at the wedding if she wasn't an idiot she would have just ran away right then & there. marriage is about sacrafice; if it isn't working for either one of you you need to spend time so that it DOES. if it was like rishi beat maya up everyday & preity rubbed devs face in the fact that she is the moneymaker, then maybe i could see the affair in a different light but rishi & preity (sorry forgot the characters name haha) were GOOD people who actually genuinely loved their spouses so wth! no man! you are really an amazing filmmaker though karan it would have been a decent movie if it had a different ending i guess :P! i LOVE k3g (SHAHRUKH KAJOL!!!<333), kkhh (Cute) & kal ho na ho! dostana seems kinda chuck & larryish haha but yeah! take care<3

This "boy issue" is the only controversial issue in the whole movie for me. This is the only point where I disagree with the story. As you can see I have not mentioned his destiny post-the-story 'cause it's not clear throughout the ending. I've been able to convince myself that the boy shall be happier in two happy families instead of one unhappy. I also think that the child was the mark point to show the rebirth of mother instinct of Riya and mark point to show Dev’s acceptance other’s people beings though the mirror of his own accepted imperfection. And in this respect the boy figure seems to be symbol than real.
In the real life I believe that parents stop being regular people with their needs and desires once they became parents and are capable of pretending the "happily ever after" till the child grows old enough to see normal people in his parents and to let them live.
But I understand and agree to the adult line completely. That is why this movie is so special to me.

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 4:40:45 PM (India Standard Time, UTC+05:30)
Dear RX! I do not justify infidelity; I believe that only love is right, I should underline it – true love. I’ve been married for a long time now and I’m faithful to my husband. It’s quite easy for me because I love him so much. I don’t have to be thorn between my love and my duty; in this case they are the same. I’m happy to be able to give love, care and fidelity to him and I know that he is happy to accept it with love and gratitude. Every person has a great need for love and happiness and marriage is a most effective way to achieve it. It happens so that people get to marry without love hoping… God knows what they are hoping for... Marriage without love is a big compromise. You can fulfill your duty, be faithful – which most does – but most of them are unhappy and are keeping their spouses in the same unhappy status. And when love comes – unexpectedly, same as death – drama enters. That is what Karan Johar was telling about in his movie. Dev as well as Maya has paid a lot for their uninvited love. They both have lost their families, crushed their lives… KANK is a simply a story of love – difficult, tragic, lives’ breaking, but still – a very beautiful love. That is what I was trying to outline in my review. KANK is simply the love story told by Karan with so much art and talent.
I don’t get it – why Karan has received so much criticism? What have he done to deserve it? Who else if not the real artist itself should decide what his art should look like, what subject he want to outline, what does he want to tell to his viewers? Has he done his job badly? He has done it superbly! Is movie bad or doesn’t plot catch you from the first minute? It isn’t so as well. Don’t you like casting? It’s a perfect star starrer! And the rest of what I’ve described earlier (photography job, picture etc)… Take any review of your strict critics – these are the characteristics they use to say if movie is good or bad. You have nothing to say against this movie based on these characteristics. I believe that the plot became the stumbling stone, the subject raised by Karan – marital infidelity. “How could he? Matrimony and marriage are sacred, and you show the marriage breaking down so openly and emotionally! It’s a scandal!”
Karan has shot truthful, talent and emotional movie. That is how I judge it. The real artist sees this world brightly and clearly, he is not afraid to raise difficult questions. You have to have great talent and colossus courage. Karan has both. Most likely he knew that raising such a unpleasant subject he will receive a lot of criticism to his address. I’m impressed and have an immense respect for him. He says what he wants to say because he can’t do otherwise.
I’ve written my review right after I’ve seen the movie. It was my first impression. Don’t judge me too strictly, but when I see SRK film for the first time – he is the only one I see, I care only about what he does on the screen. That the way he is =) That’s his magic. Next time I’d seen the movie I’ve appreciated the supreme acting of the rest of the cast and those shades I’d missed. You are right, Rishi is a very good person, a perfect husband who loves his wife very much. Abhichek has plated his eligibilities fully, his acting was amazing. His eyes full of pain, despair and tears when he was crushing his house after knowing of Maya’s infidelity has stayed in my memory for a long time. The saddest thing is he has not deserved this pain, this harm caused by Maya when she felt for another. But it’s not her fault – it’s her disaster.
Maybe it is Karan’s fault he spoke about this in his movie… You think he’d better avoid this subject?
And one more thing. The main character. Dev Saran. Shahrukh has played this character brilliantly. He – the loving and faithful husband in the real life – made his character so real and alive with all his floes and dignities. I can’t stop loving Dev Saran. I do not justify Dev, I love him, I accept him for what he is and I forgive him. I don’t know if Dev would get the same feelings from me if it weren’t SRK playing him. I doubt it. Sharukh Khan and all his charm, his unbelievable talent, his soul makes Dev so attractive. Dev has touched my heart, he stayed in my soul same as Asokа, Devdas, Raj Malhotra, Aman Varma played by Shahrukh. I can say more – probably, Dev became my favorite character not because his has cheated on his wife but because in the Dev’s heart lives the great love, gained though suffering and thus – worth living.
Sharukh’s influence on viewers is immense. Maybe those who criticize his character believe that those who will see this movie will go cheating right away. I don’t think it is possible. Chances are his fans will enjoy the depth and strength of his talent one more time, enjoy his amazing acting and his charm.
I love KANK very much. I love Shahrukh and all the great actors who took part in this movie; I’m grateful to Karan for his spectacular work, for the emotions this film gave me. Karan Johar is still very young. If he is so amazing now, his movies are so good – imagine what kind of masterpieces he’ll create in the future, they will be in the mainstream for our children and grandchildren, same as his today movies for us, his grateful viewers.
P.S. Dear Karan! I’m deeply grateful for publishing my comment. I think it is very unfair that people who criticize the plot criticize the whole movie. I think you have done the perfect artist’s job – your movie lives nobody indifferent. It makes people to feel, to agree or disagree, it raises different emotions. It’s a pity that negative attitude to the plot and some of the characters (and relative film industry illiteracy) has distracted your critics for objective evaluation of KANK as a piece of film art.
One of our Russian female writers (beginning of XX century) said “If you have to explain it – you should not explain it”. I’m not trying to “explain”. I want you, Karan, to hear me out, I want you to know that your work has been appreciated by viewers, by those you’ve created the film for.
I’m wondering why does the best performances of SRK (imho those are Asoka and KANK) were met so negatively in India? Most likely it is due to the fact that they are breaking the traditions that are bigger than just an Indian cinema. You and Sharukh are no longer the Indians – for a long time now you belong to us, people living all over the planet. We love you and wait for your new creations impatiently. We wish you great successes and big box offices.

Hi Karan,

I havent seen your new flick "Dostana" And most likely I wouldnt see it even for free. I dont like your kind of cinema at all. I think your best try was Kuch kuch hota hai.. After that you are on down slide. I dont understand why you want to force down your own idea of gay humour to everyone' throat. Thats primary reason why people claim you to be gay. Because you think its socially normal. I really dont care if you are gay or not. Or I dont have anythign against anyone being gay. But I do have objection, someone wants to come in my drawing and paint it Gay.. I just dont like it. So you keep your prefreneces in your closet. And if you want to make main stream cinema. Make as per main stream crowd. And mainstream crowd is not GAY my dear.. We are straights and we find being Gay not so cool..So please keep your gay prefrences in your house, in your mind and in your office.. Dont paint it red on bollywood canvass and expect public to make it hit....

I think when someone mixes her personal odd prefrences with his profession then only end result is debacle..

Hello Karan,
It is the first time I am writing to you and I would like to congratulate you about how much you have grown as a director since kuch kuch hota hai. You pay attention to the slightest detail in your movies, an aspect which I have always appreciated.

Anyway, I am going to talk about your upcoming movie My Name is Khan. You have mentioned it is going to revolve around a character who has Asperger's Syndrome. I am glad that directors of your calibre are finally tackling serious/complex topics like this.

This will raise awareness to the general public. Asperger's Syndrome (AS) can go undiagnosed for years in an individual. The person living with AS is often misunderstood and rejected by people surrounding him. He finds it hard to socialise, cannot understand jokes and sarcasm...etc. Further info at :-
http://www.aspergerfoundation.org.uk/infosheets/whatisaspergers.pdf

I know you must have done your research well and know all this already. This is meant for people who are actually reading this comment and dont know much about AS. [Sorry, I am compelled by my profession as a speech and language therapy student to do so ;-) ].

Coming to "My name is Khan", I hope it will turn out to be as you are visualising it and you will be suceessful in tapping all the necessary aspects of the topic you are approaching. I would like to say that I cant wait to see Shah Rukh Khan embodying such a complex character. I have full faith in him as he rarely disappoints his fans.

About people who say that it is going to be something similar to " taare Zameen Ke" then, I think they are choosing to be ignorant. They were ignorant of the term dyslexia until they watched taare zameen ke and now coz they are aware that your next movie is going to be about another disorder, they are assuming that it is going to be similar. I have to mention that every disorder comes with different clinical maniferstations/characteristics and each individual with a certain syndrome will undergo through them differently. Trust me people with AS are different from each other as they are all separate individuals essentially.

I Wish you and all your team "all the best" for your upcoming movie.

Sincere Regards to you

Travelling from servers to servers,
Call it destiny of faith,
My mouse caught a website by chance…

The maker of movies…
Following the ‘K’ factor was caught,
And thus came the discovery of his world…

Reading some of those tons of comments
It is sometimes amazing to perceive
How a simple human being may become the dream of many…

Some of which still believe…
That a comment of theirs…
May give them a chance in the glamour world…

Funny of course it is…
That a light of hope is seen
In the tunnel of infinity!

**if they really got the beauty… sorry to say that they are way far from some needing wit :-/ … French proverb: L’espoir fait vivre les imbéciles**

Scrolling here and there
Pictures of a movie,
Made me revive some moments…

Moments of my childhood…
Months and months not to say years…
Thinking of the same story…

Thousands of times after watching the same exquisite movie…
An inner yearning was still there…
Yearning to watch the movie over again!

Moments during the school holidays…
Learning and imitating
The dialogues and steps of dance were recalled…

Childish it was!
For I was a child
Of no more than ten!

Some clicks here…
Some clicks there…
A line attracted my attention…

**Each comment was being read**

Prayer was thus that
The comment in the form of poetry
Did not bore you!

With a childish smile of yours,
Yet mature thoughts in the brain,
I wish you farewell…

Smitha…
One of your true fans… for I may not say biggest fan,
As I know not
All of your fans… (^^”)

Hey, I saw Dostana and I gotta say, great movie, some parts were absolutely hilarious. And some of the lines that Anvita (I think that was the name of the dialog writer) had were fantastic. I'm really looking forward to some really cool behind the scenes footage on the DVD so we can see the unrated fun that they had shooting. Also, is Tarun planning on doing a commentary with abhishek and john, I think it would be awesome for the DVD of Dostana

Dear Karan,

You did a great job in Dostana. Me and my hubby went to see this movie in singapore on 16 Nov 2008. And you won't belive that we were rolling on the floor when Abhi Bhai started acting like a gay.

and that time when Priyanka was in doubt that both Kunal and Sam are liking his boss. Oh My Krsna!!

My Prannath did not stop laughing . And Kiran Kher - she is always at her best. "PUTTAR". hahahha!!

We enjoyed the movie.

Let me give you a sincere criticism. You keep on showing about family values and relationship values. But have you ever tried to show something which can give everyone to think about Spritualism.

May be I am bit on spritual side so said this.

May Krsna bless you with good jobs.

Regards
Shafu
