As I prepare to dash out of the office to make what seems like a hundred pit stops before boarding a flight to the US for prep work for “My Name is Khan” it dawns on me that I’ve not had a moment to collect my thoughts for this weeks blog. So far I’ve shared with you my thoughts and opinions on topics with varied levels of interest and relevance to my life. To dig a little deeper, and share a little more, I give you this week something incredibly close to my heart.

The other day at home sifting through piles of memories, I came across some pictures that instantly transported me to a time in my life that meant so many things to me, and the people surrounding me. The making of my second film, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” was a larger than life experience. Every element stood out as a first for me. The scale and opulence of the film has been talked about for years, but in truth, the film had a cast that we may never see together on screen again. The characters had lives that were unabashed and indulgent, and my actors played into that with confidence. My crew wore an energy that was magnetic and constantly rejuvenating. Most importantly, above and beyond every other reasoning, it was the film of mine that my father loved the most. These fading, stained, and slightly abused black & whites bring back to my life a fond and vivid reliving of color, lights, camera, and action.

Please enjoy...

Love and koffee,

Karan.

Hi Karan,

I'm so glad you have a blog, this just eases my pain because of the wait I have to suffer between Koffee with Karan seasons...by the way when is the new season starting again? Another reason I'm glad is that you're coming to San Francisco! You're always shooting in New York, which is so far away and it's been a dream of mine to meet you and be on the sets of your movie...so hopefully at least one of these will come true, this time the chances are higher! And thank you for bringing Kajol and Shahrukh back together again. Love your blog, you write beautifully...keep writing! Lots of Love!

Best,

Great Pics Karan!

Specially enjoyable for those who loved K3G.

By the way, U said that MY NAME IS KHAN is going to be a very different film from the rest of your films.

Does that mean very realistic handling , like Mani Ratnam....or is it gonna something mixed like KANK i.e.realism+escapism???

And if no escapism , are you sure you ll be able to bring out the chemistry between Kajol and Srk thru your direction???

With Best Wishes for Dharma and MNIK,
Your Biggest Fan,

Saim

ah K3G was my absolute favorite! not only among ur films, but all bollywood films (i know u hate the term, sorry for that)
first of all, because it was my very first hindi movie that i've seen. it totally fascinated me! at that time i didn't know abt Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol etc. I was a total stranger to all this. Plus i live in a country which is totally western-orientated, though eastern oriented geographically (yea, it's lame old Romania)- i can't wait to escape this place and run to Paris :D ok offtopic i know
but this movie totally captured me! since then i'm addicted to... India! yes, it's become my passion- the culture, the language, the people, everything!
of course because of that u've become my favorite director, Shahrukh my fav actor, Kajol my fav actress, Farah my fav choreographer... and it's still the same till date and i'm sure it will be like this forever for me :)
of course when i got to know more about u i discovered that not only u are incredibly good in ur professions but incredibly nice and good human beings with much more to say
so God bless u Karan for introducing me to all this, it really changed my way of seeing life

Also just wanted to let you know that I caught an old interview of yours on IBN 'Being karan' with Anuradha? and thought it was one of the most intelligent one. I think most Indian media men go over the same set of questions over and over again. It was refreshing to see some smart analysis of your work there.

YAY! I'm the first comment this time.
K3G was the best movie of my life. Your attention to detail is immaculate. Like I posted before, I did not wear mascara when I went to see K3G because I knew I would cry and be a complete mess if I did wear mascara.
YOU ARE BRILLIANT KARAN JOHAR!
and have fun in the U.S.!

who knows? Maybe I might just run into you while you're here.

lovely photos. this is the film of ures that i loved most too. (was lucky to have been gifted the book on the making..which is now not to be found anywhere.)
anyway, i feel that u made this film from ur heart and each moment in the film is truly touching..strikes a chord with every single person - from a mother, a sibling, father, wife etc--i know this from having spoken to many people abt the film.

the best part about K3G was this, that sooo many viewers could relate to each character, each situation - and i humbly believe this is what was missing in KANK.
its funny how u were criticized most for this film, granted that there were scenes u could have done without if u wanted(i.e. the whole anthem bit), but aside from those excesses i truly feel that K3g will go down as a masterpiece in many ways. i guess the criticism was a result of just the films it was put up against that year 2001 but truly, this film was a complete film - made you laugh, smile, weep to an extent that it actually made u FEEL for the characters, to reach out and give them a hug - and when a filmmaker achieves that, he has succeeded. also the srk-kajol scenes in this film were the best romantic scenes ever.

Hi.. I agree with you... The magnum cast of K3G may not be seen anytime in future. Hats off 2 you.... Big B, SRK , Jaya, Hritick, kajol, Kareena, Rani... indeed was a dream cast & a very rare one.. For quite some years after K3G i had this feeling this perhaps was the last film of SRK-Kajol together. Thanks to u that it became false in rather short time.

We here so much of cold war between SRK & BIg B these days in media... Karan... Is it really media made war or there is some truth in it... I know it would be difficult for you to answer this... but still thought of asking...

Hi Karan !!

Thanks for the beautiful pictures !!!

All the best for 'My Name is Khan' ..just wondering wht happened to your 'K' connect? How come you are directing and producing films without "K"??

I have seen all your movies but to be frank I didnt liked Kabhi Khuhsi Kabhi Gum that much....K2H2 and KANK were far better (in terms of storyline). Hope your new venture will have a different story with less larger than life sets and will be a bit more realistic...

and yes you said you are busy with the pre production..can you share with the readers what all tasks are actually been done by your team before the shooting takes off?

Hope to see some Indian locations in ur movie and nt just NY :-)

Hey karan,

That was a wonderful collage of images. Something that movie-lovers like me will always long for.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was indeed a memorable film for all of us. As much as it was for you. Okay, not as much, but still it was special.

The ensemble of cast was incredible. The story flew naturally , and it was entertaining form the first frame to the last.

I hope to make such movies, some day.

Rani is so sweet . i wish she gets a wonderful guy who will love her and respect her . i wanted rani and abhishek to be together . But i lost all my respect for abhishek after he married aishwarya. I don't hold aishwarya in high regards so when a guy like abhishek married her i felt maybe abhishek is not all that good like everyone make him out to be . He must not be that great a guy after all otherwise how could he marry aish ????She is so fake and boring !!
I had to write this after seeing the pics you put and seeing Rani in them some how make me feel bad for her....she is so sweet and nice and i wish her the best ...

Hi Karan,

I think that the pictures are beautiful. The give the essence of warth, dedication, they depict that it's not just "about loving your parents," but "loving your family" as a whole. If I could describe the pictures in one word it would be............touching.

On your July 18th post, you mentioned the shooting locations of "My Name is Khan." You said L.A, San Fran, and Washington. Now I was just wondering if you ment Washinton state or Washinton D.C, because some people here call Washington D.C just Washington. My only reason for asking is because I'm a DIE HARD SRK fan and I just want to meet him once in my life. I know that you might get this a lot but when I say DIE HARD I really mean it.....to a point that I agrue with my dad over SRK, he's a Salman fan :p He calls me SRK's lawyer, because of the way I defend him. But the point is that I leave on the east coast, and if all your shooting locstions are on the west coast, then well I guess i will have to wait until you have SRK back on the Brookyln Bridge :D

Lot's of Love and Wishes.

Thanks for sharing Karan. I'm sorry though -- Kareena K is not an actor! So I'm glad this cast will never come together again! The only film where I liked her is Jab We Met and the credit goes to Imtiaz Ali. Certain actors need certain directors to bring out the best in them. (E.g. Mani Ratnam for Abhishek) Likewise certain films need certain actors to tell the story. Hence the right casting is most important for a successful and memorable film. From this post it seems like you made K3G only for yourself and your family. Nothing wrong with that. It's your money. But please keep in mind that the only people who love the film most will be you guys! :-D

Nice pictures Karan....

Yesterday i saw "Aamir.." the movie... and i must say.. its an awesome movie.. if u have not watched it.. please do.. a must watch i must say.. which brings me to the topic of how film as a medium is so powerful and it should be used to spread messages across the masses. Commercial entertainers does collects a lot of moolah for producers.. but they should not shy away from responsibilities... something which u have..

Hope to see more meaningful and relevant films out of ur kitty rather than the usual all stars and lots of money..

Yes the photographs look timeless. More than that they depict many moods and original expressions.
It is nice that you look back on KKKG so fondly. I guess every person should live with pleasant memories.
Isnt it amazing that after all the hard work and so many mountains to climb, we always remember the good things.
I guess thats human spirit.

Dear Karan, you made me cry with your message esp. about the K3G part! The movie was FABULOUS and its cast was unique and great... At least, we'll see Kajol and SRK together again SOON, that's the most important thing!!!

The small pictures from the making of K3G are great... Could you kindly post more photos and in larger size esp. of Kajol and SRK? You have so many pictures that we have never seen and you must know we are totally crazy about every new and old picture of our jodi? Thanks so much...

Hello Karan,

thanks a lot for those lovely pics of the amazing cast of K3G, they really bring back fond memories of this memorable film. My favourite pics are those with you and Kajol, and the one with Shahrukh and his kid, a real cutie ;-)

I love this gem of a film, one of my favourite parts is the SHM song ;-), even today it still gives me goosebumps. The whole cast and crew did a fabulous job, simply incredible!

Looking also forward, besides MNIK, to the animated version of KKHH, i can't understand why people say it's more a film for children, maybe it has do to with the title which sounds a bit “kiddie“ but cute, and in light of the anniversary of KKHH understandable. Animated Hollywood movies are watched and loved by every age group, especially the latest Pixel movies and the Disney classics like “The Lion King“ etc. So I'm sure it will be success at the box office in India and worldwide, and who doesn't want to watch KKHH2 with adorable animals and enchanting music on the big screen again :-)

Hi Karan,

first a small update on your last two entries...

We the people: First thing that came to my mind while reading your post was what a horrible place your film fraternity must be. Full of fake, backstabbing, disenchanted, envious and greedy people. Not a place I would like to be associated with. So I thought, maybe he is depressed, stressed or something else and I might have to send over an ambulance...

Then came "Good Karma at Dharma". That sounded fresh, well-adjusted, happy and proud. And those questions you asked? Wake up Sid to me sounds like a TV-Breakfast-Gossip-Show. Or maybe the title reminds me of „Wake up America“... I don't know. But what is the use of judging/commenting if I dont know what the movie is all about. Ranbir and Konkona? Why not. I have only seen Saawariya with Ranbir. He was ok. Not a gift to mankind but ok. I like Konkona very much especially in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. Rensil D'Silva was an important part in my favourite Hindi-Film Rang de Basanti. I hope he will turn out to be an equal good director as he is a writer. Kuchi Kuchi Hota Hai? Aehm.... Sorry to say that KKHH is my least favourite film of yours. An animated version of that will not drag me into a cinema hall. And Rocky the Rooster? He was the main protagonist in the brilliant Chicken Run... Are you trying a sequel? MNIK.... ok... my hopes that your next movie will not only be without a K but without a Khan are not fullfilled. But there is still hope that his performance might come close to those in Swades or Chak de, which in my opinion are his best....

Now your new entry... I try to remember when was the last time I took out the treasures of my past... Must have been long time ago... When does one look back? Usually at an important turn in ones life... But isnt it better to look ahead instead of looking back? Maybe you should read your „Good Karma at Dharma“-Post aloud to yourself. There is so much waiting for you.... concentrate on your future. Treasure your past but don’t cling to it. And tell yourself that you can do much better...

So here I am sitting on my bench waiting and hoping that despite your busy schedule you will find time and leisure to write on your blog.

Best regards
Kristine

Thanks for sharing those nice photos Karan and please contact me if you need anything while in the US; I wish I could meet you or even be your assistant!! I also believe KKKG was an awesome movie! The cast was superb and the movie will always be the all time best. You continue to always outdo yourself which I am sure you will with "Khan" It couldn't be a more fitting time to make an anti-terrorist film on a grand scale and I admire you for having the guts! Also can you please clear the air on what happened between SRK and Salman? I just don't believe all the gossip I keep reading. God Bless!

heloooooo! Mr. Johar, I have a question why did you post more pics of kareena than kajol. Dont you think that on your blog their are more srkajol fans, and you didnt posted any of their pic together.
I must say that your pic with kajol is the cutest one.

that is very sad.

but I m happy that you started planning for the things for the most awaited film of the world.
SO A LOT OF LOVE AND BEST WISHES.

Dear Karan,

Thanks for those pics!! They bring back so many nice memories I personally had on watching this movie. It's still and always be a Bollywood standard and classic. I noticed how my dvd seller always suggests this movie first to every new person in the store. It's a movie a lot of people carry in their hearts, just as you do.

The stills are all so amazing, and beautiful and intimite.

Have a nice trip to US!! And if you find some new pics of SRK and Kajol please post them!

Hi Karan

"Kabhie Kushi Kabhi Gham" was my first experience with Indian Film - and one of my favourites!
...a few years ago - it was a really hot summer in Germany -there was a TV-summer -festival (RTL II by a contract with REM)It was so hot in my studio, that I decided to have a break .I closed the curtain and watched the film on small screen... I was so impressed that I lost in time - and my passion for Indian Film was born ! - and my passion for sarees! ( I remembered that I wished to have a saree at the time I was a poor student and it was too expensive for me.../ this time I work with this textile-jewels and I love it!!!)
K3G was a real boom in Germany after the TV-premiere: - the soundtrack was used by dance-companies and it was / is a real hype in the oriental-dance-scene...no dance-festival without Bollywood-music!
For me K3G is a Masterpiece!...with all emotions we can have!

It´s a real hot summer-day today - so I think I should close the curtain and watch "Kabhie Kushi Kabhi Gham" ...

Light and love
Gabi

PS: I think the people we have lost have a place in our hearts forever - and your father is near you with every thought!
Thank you for the message between the sentences: I´m a real workoholic but after reading your blog -message I have the impulse to visit my parents and spent more time with friends- thank you!

Hi Karan, it's good to see you blogging. I just read all your posts. I can tell you one thing, never change your style of filmmaking. The critcs might make adverse comments, your peers might try to make you feel uncomfortable, but follow your instincts and always make films that you like. I am myself a "movie addict" and I love different kinds of films—from Rashomon to DDLJ. I personally feel that bollywood will be incomplete without the films that you make. If Bollywood needs a RDB, then it also needs films like KANK or K3G. Everything is a part of the whole and the Hindi film industry will cease to be a self sufficient whole without the kinds of films that you make. I am a big fan of SRK and love to see him act in your films. So I am wishing you all the best for My Name is Khan, I can't wait to see SRK and Kajol together. I will be waiting for your next post eagerly.

this is the one movie inspite of the fact that it had tons of aanso. i loved it. with this movie you kind of started a wave at that time. teenagers, young men and women were proudly declaring their love for their parents.

hi,
What would like somehow to refer to this we observe and read but he lacks words. I find emptiness in my to the heart.Indignation this is little too. Is to have a look on the pictures which portray pleasantly as truly friendly prevail relations on movie plans. Only what this word of the comment really stuck Karan in mine in these last days to the heart, that The talent is only God in Bollywood. yet and these alone rules prevail at us here. We differ from each other so very much and however what something is it be able to us connect. The art . I wish that the ones who will try do not find themselves always to destroy the quiet. The ones who on lie and vanity build their ideology. The fact disturbs them, that the people of various religions and confessions, women and men one can respect and co-operate with oneself. Showing the due respect near this to oneself. I found, that You which in they attached the elegant way the author blog simply foolishly little they joked. Or this bad that , people be able to forget about differences . The lack of words , really. The fact saddens me that some can słono pay for their loyalty and devotion. Their attitude impresses me but the fear wakes simultaneously about them alone. What do people cook such fate to people?

Out of all the films you have made, K3G is my most favorite... Mainly because Kajol does not get hurt in the movie and SRK is madly in love with her unlike KKHH where Kajol gets hurt... and where SRK later realizes his luv for Kajol... It was a beautifully made film with absolutely no flaws... But yes the fact that Hrithik's character lost tons of weight in 8 yrs time is a lilttle unbelievable... but nothing is wrong with that... it is a movie after all...

Thank you for all the pics... It would have been great if you had posted a lot more pics... especially of srkajol... I really hope your pre production work of MNIK goes as well as you expect it to be...I also hope that you get to start the movie at the right time and end it at the right time and release it at the right time...

Thank you for sharing the pictures Karan! They are beautiful and do indeed create a sense of Nostalgia. For the nostalgia of what your team of film-makers and actors, as well as yourself, were doing at the time of that particular scene. For us fans, a nostalgia of the emotion that we felt while the scene was playing itself out.

K3G was, actually still is, an emotionally charged film and I have not yet seen another that has come close to replicating its magic.

Ok, well I guess your moderators didn't approve of my previous post. I have no idea why considering I didn't say anything offensive or rude. In any case, cool pics and it makes me wish you would've made a making documentary type thing for K3G (not that 1 hour making that came on tv). You put together a legendary cast that we may never see again in Hindi cinema and a special film deserves special treatment on DVD. I guess it might be too late for that and hindsight is always 20-20. Anyways, keep making the films you do, and I hope that the humor present in all your films is also present in My Name is Khan. I think your films are as special as they are because of the humor you include in a highly emotional story.

Dear Karan ,
how about a part for Madhuri Dixit in your My Name is Khan ?
Two talented actress in one movie. Besides Madhuri is residing in the U.S and it would be easier on her to shoot in the U.S
I don't know about others but Lataji sang the hit title song for Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum and we haven't heard her voice for a while in your movies. Can you get her to sing a duet in My Name is Khan ? Something nice pairing her with Sonu or Udit or perhaps a solo version of the song that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is singing in the movie from what I read somewhere.
As for madhuri she is getting good reviews on her performances in Amitabh's unforgettable tour.
And how about getting together SRK and Dilip Kumar together for a few scenes in the same frame in the movie. You can shoot their part in Mumbai. Create a short but special role for Dilip Kumar.
Millions of fans are anxious to see them together.

Dear Karan,
Writing this e-mail is perhaps one of the most surreal things I have done in recent times. I suppose that a certain synchronicity exists in the fact that you now have a blog, and in some ways appear to be even more accessible to those who perhaps have had the opportunity to observe your growth as not just a filmmaker, actor, or media personality but also as an individual. I have watched all of the films which you have had a hand in creating, and find that there is this inexplicable bond that you are able to create with your audience…which enables them to believe even if it is for a moment that someone else is riding the undercurrent of human emotion along with them. I find that your characters possess a certain je ne sais quoi, because although each character is beautiful in its own way, human flaw; be it in hubris, fear, helplessness is apparent as one begins to peel the layers away…sometimes appearing to be in irony, or contradiction with what he or she is meant to represent. I also noticed that the physicality of your characters is in alignment with their belief system…e.g. Shahrukh’s limp in KANK (indicative of his inability to yield to change), Preity’s myopic view of her world in KHNH…represented not only by the fact that she’s wearing glasses, but also, by the scene in which she takes her glasses off. It’s like an innate understanding of the human subconscious, almost Da Vinci’ esque… In any case, I could probably wax eloquent about many nuances relevant to what you try to say with your films, however, the primary reason for my posting to your blog is to see if six degrees of separation really exists between people. I originally wrote this post in French, however, despite an attempt to post, it did not appear on your site, and figured I’d try again in English. As a completely random side note, I just wanted to say that I find your references to your mother on numerous occasions to be quite endearing, and it is vastly amusing that you refer to yourself in self-deprecating terms when you well know that there are probably thousands if not more individuals who would be thrilled to simply meet you…and if you’ve had an opportunity to read The Secret…then you’d know that what you put out to the universe is what you get back in return. Best wishes in all your endeavors!

Hi Karan,

Though its routine, its true that i am a big fan of yours. I feel i get a better word than " i am a big fan " . I am from US. I keep watching your KWK episodes. After watching them i feel that you are a very good actor :-)

Though you know the reply forthe questions you shoot at them you don't give any expression on your face. Thats really lovely....
Your pictures are great and love to watch them. Waiting eagerly for the Kajol and Sharukh movie with u. As there are many fans to you and everyone love your movies. I request you to keep giving some social messages in all your movies...as you always do.
